❗️New Exhibition❗️ The Shirley Sherwood Gallery will soon be welcoming the work of Marc Quinn for 'Light Into Life', an exhibition taking root in @kewgardens which explores the essential role plants have in our lives. In an original collaborative curation by Dr Sherwood and Marc Quinn, Gallery 6 will see paintings from the Shirley Sherwood Collection of plants which inspired Light into Life, including orchids, irises and plants used in medicine. Alongside will be various drawings and sculptures by @marcquinnart of found, discarded, artificially arranged and re-imagined flowers, creating an indulgent and sharp contrast with the scientifically accurate and detailed botanical paintings. Opening on Saturday 4 May, the exhibition serves as an exploration into how we portray and think about plants, as well as a celebration of the importance of practising and showcasing botanical art, in all its various forms. Inspiring artists part 2 Marc Quinn (1964-present) @marcquinnart ‘Self’ - a series of self-portraits created from Quinn’s own frozen blood is both shocking and beautiful. This piece really stayed with me when I saw it exhibited. Quinn’s concepts are multi layered and complex. I think what really excites me about his work is the duality of beauty and aversion, being drawn into it, but repelled by the discomfort it emotes. Self is a self-portrait of the artist, but one that literally uses his body as material since the cast of Quinn's head, immersed in frozen silicone, is created from ten pints of his own blood. In this way, the materiality of the sculpture has both a symbolic and real function. The work was made at a time when Quinn was an alcoholic and a notion of dependency – of things needing to be plugged in or connected to something to survive – is apparent since the work needs electricity to retain its frozen appearance. A further iteration made every five years, this series of sculptures presents a cumulative index of passing time and an ongoing self-portrait of the artist's ageing and changing self. #nationalportraitgallery #marcquinn #blood # #self

His sculptures, paintings, and drawings explore the link between art and science. He often uses unusual materials in his sculptures, such as ice and bread. In 1994, Marc Quinn made lots of sculptures of his hands, and Year 2 used bread to do the same. First, the children had to make the dough. Then, they had to use the bread dough to carefully sculpt their hands. Finally, they baked them all in the oven and were so proud of their very own hand sculptures! Marc Quinn’s blood portrait, known as “Self”, is one of the most emblematic and discussed works in contemporary art. Begun in 1991, this series of self-portraits is made using the artist’s own blood, which is drawn, preserved, and then frozen into moulds to create a sculpture of his head. Each version of “Self” contains approximately four liters of the artist’s blood, an approximate amount of surplus blood the body can lose without suffering harm. This process is repeated every five years, thus providing a continuous reflection on identity, change, and mortality over time. The work challenges traditional conventions of sculpture and self-portraiture, using organic materials to explore issues of self-preservation and self-observation. With “Self”, Quinn explores not only his physicality but also the temporality and vulnerability of human existence. The need to keep the work frozen reflects the fragility of life and the desire for immortality, universal themes in the history of art but here rendered in an extremely personal and innovative manner. Beyond its powerful symbolism, “Self” raises ethical and practical questions regarding the conservation of contemporary artworks, especially those made with biological materials. Художница Аннушка Броше. На мой взгляд, ее картины отдаленно напоминают Марка Куинна. Скульптура ничего мне не напоминает 🫠 Сейчас ее можно найти сразу в двух локациях. В @ruarts_foundation у нее персональная выставка. Части женского тела, сформированный из груд деформированных кувшинов (женское тело - сосуд), обязанные веревками (полюбить себя и свое тело, женщина в маскулинном мире). Эстетично. В галерее @luchgallery_com в пространстве @cube_moscow она присутствует с двумя рельефами, представленными в контексте. Выставка называется "Амазонки Новой академии". На нее собрали работы художниц, которые плотно сотрудничали с питерской Новой академией изящных искусств Тимура Новикова. Из тех, кого я знаю, там узнаваемая Айдан Салахова и Ольга Тобрелутс. Все очень разношерстное, но по отдельности интересное для изучения.
