This piece really stayed with me when I saw it exhibited. Quinn’s concepts are multi layered and complex. I think what really excites me about his work is the duality of beauty and aversion, being drawn into it, but repelled by the discomfort it emotes. They are left with an abstract image that is impossible to measure up to. This is the basis of all celebrity and religious imagery.” This work depicts the fashion model Kate Moss who became a media icon of our age. Presented in contorted yoga poses, the sculpture explores the idea of Moss as an abstraction, an idealised figure who is more of a cultural hallucination than an actual person of flesh and blood. In Quinn’s ‘The Road to Enlightenment series, Moss is depicted as an emaciated figure. This work is based on a Buddhist sculpture that is approximately 2,000 years old, which relates to a moment of enlightenment and the birth of Buddhist philosophy. Miniature Venus by #MarcQuinn “To me, this sculpture is an addition to a long lineage of archetypal female images, stretching from the Venus of Willendorf in prehistoric times, through Nefertiti’s bust in Egypt, images of the Virgin, and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus in the Renaissance, to Warhol’s Marilyn and in my own work – the sculpture of Alison Lapper. Sphinx is a rebirth of Venus. It is a portrait of Kate Moss’s image, not of herself. An interesting thing about Kate Moss is that, because she never gives interviews, she’s almost purely ubiquitous image. Like the frozen flower garden, which raises the question ‘When does an object becomes an image of itself?’, so Sphinx asks the same question of a person. The yoga-like pose, reminiscent of an Indian sculpture of Shiva, is in a contemporary scene about trying to affect spirit through the body. It also seems to symbolise that Kate’s image is sculpted by society’s collective desire, contorted by outside influences. But his self-portraiture offers an unexpected—and squeamish—twist to the genre. In his 1991 sculpture titled Self, he began to use his body as raw material for the piece. He made a cast of his own head and filled it with 10 pints of his blood immersed in frozen silicone. To keep the piece in a solid state, its temperature is maintained at -0.4°F (-18°C). The picture was taken using the Portrait mode on the iPhone 13 (Studio Light) and then edited to use the Stage Light setting which made the out-of-focus background go black. Carrying on the sculpture-posts, but moving a bit up in time to Marc Quinn - a British contemporary visual artist whose work includes sculpture, installation, and painting. Quinn explores "what it is to be human in the world today" through subjects including the body, genetics, identity, environment, and the media. His work has used materials that vary widely, from blood (super scary effigies of his own head, made from his own frozen blood), bread and flowers, to marble and stainless steel, oftentimes fusing matters like this gorgeous, gigantic, painted, cast metal orchid sculpture. The artist favours a rather naturalistic or copy-form approach to his sculptures of “everyday objects”, but rendering them otherworldly by scale, material or surface colour. Quinn has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Sir John Soane's Museum, the Tate Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Fondation Beyeler, Fondazione Prada Somerset House, and South London Gallery, however my first meeting with this artist was at Kunsten art museum in Aalborg, Denmark. This is kind of a note to myself. My main goal is to shut up and listen. So I get the irony of even posting this. The sculpture is undeniably visually arresting. It is powerful, yet its defiance is at odds with its origins and, now, its uncertain fate. Posts I've shared today by @larryachiampong highlight the missed opportunity here for Black artists to create something for this space. The centring of a white, male artist. And the sad fact it took until 2020 for Colston to be removed in the first place. But, as an art historian, I wanted to briefly acknowledge that the history of this sculpture - of this moment - is still to be written. And who will write it? So much of my work as a teacher is getting students to understand historiography. And this, like so much, is our reminder to pay attention to histories, even before they are written. To ensure equity in who gets to write history as well as to which histories we pay attention to. This it also means we have to pay attention to, and centre, discourse on social media - arguably more democratic and accessible spaces, certainly more so than a £9k per year degree. Questa statua, chiamata "A Surge of Power", è stata eretta sul basamento vuoto un tempo occupato dal mercante di schiavi Edward Colston a Bristol, nel Regno Unito. L'ex statua fu demolita durante le proteste di Black Lives Matter e scaricata in un fiume. La nuova figura è di Jen Reid, che è stata fotografata con il pugno alzato durante le proteste. L'artista Marc Quinn, che ha lavorato al pezzo con la signora Reid, ha definito l'opera "un'installazione pubblica temporanea".
