Yesterday I stopped by the lovely market town of Oakham. Oakham is the county town of the tiny county of Rutland, if you didn’t know that. In any case, there is a lot of great history to be seen here, including the lovely market square and market crosses; Oakham Castle, the Great Hall of which still stands; Oakham School, the 14th-century All Saints Church, which was restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott, as well as a load of lovely narrow streets. Castle Rising Village Visitors to Castle Rising today might overlook the significance of the stone cross and the green it sits upon. Yet, both are crucial symbols of the village’s historical way of life, particularly during the Medieval period; serving as a reminder of a time when villagers and locals gathered here to buy and sell goods. The upper part of the Market Cross is made from Barnack stone which was also used in constructing the nearby castle and church, indicating that the cross was likely erected around the same period. The top third of the cross is the oldest while the remainder likely underwent Victorian restoration during Fulke Howard’s time as Lord of the Manor. Framing some new collagraphs this morning. I rather enjoy trying out a new blue frame for the blue ink collagraphs. With a double mount of blue/off white. The collagraph itself is an handmade plate of card, glue, tape, and scratches, then etching ink is applied and then rubbed away again, then the delicate plate of tape, scratches and ink is squished together onto slightly damp thick paper under a heavy etching press. I made this a limited edition of just 4 prints, each one slightly different to the last. In 1970 the Northamptonshire town of Desborough voted to demolish its own high street. A few buildings had to go because of the widening of the A6 but only a few. The rest of the demolition seems to have been entirely voluntary. It was called "redevelopment", but few new shops were built to replace what was lost. 🌈 @norfolkcore Had a lovely time enjoying Wymondham, definitely my favourite place in South Norfolk. Despite the weather, I had a blast perusing the quaint little shops and cafes that call this historic and beautiful town home. The grand abbey stands as a constant backdrop no matter where you are in the town, it rises up from the banks of the River Tiffey, its twin towers embracing the sky. I was even lucky enough to witness and capture a rainbow when walking up the iconic Damgate Street, famous for its preserved buildings. Richmond Obelisk Evening Everyone, hope you have had a good week and have enjoyed the glimpse of spring? Tonight we are in Richmond, North Yorkshire to visit a landmark in the town Market Place that has a hidden secret. Many historic towns around the UK have a market square, a place where markets and public events have been held over the centuries and Richmond in North Yorkshire is no different. There was originally a market cross at its centre, although they were often just a stone column to mark a place of trading. The idea of the “cross” was to represent “the sanctity of the bargain” and provide a reminder that nobody should be ripped off. Richmond's original market cross was described as “the greatest beauty of the town” and sat on a stone plinth that was surrounded by a 6 foot high wall. The wall itself was also highly ornamental, with the shields of the most influential families in the area; namely the Fitz-Hugh, Scrope, Conyers and Neville families. The four corners of the cross were guarded by carved, stone dogs. The year 1771 saw the replacement of this market cross with what is known as Richmond Obelisk, by the Mayor of the time, Christopher Wayne. Indeed, there is an inscription on the obelisk - "Rebuilt AD1771 Christopher Wayne Esq Mayor" and this may suggest that the original had fallen into disrepair or become outdated. The Georgian era, known for its architectural elegance, saw a shift towards obelisks as more fashionable and classical market markers. The new obelisk was not particularly well received, despite being quite elegant to the modern eye, as it was described as “a crude and bulging obelisk” by some of its critics.
