Closing out my first week in South Africa with a bang means spending 4 hours at 3 wineries with all the friends I made! 15 glasses of wine later and we resorted to human tipping, wheelbarrow races, and attempting to spell out Contiki! There were some teary-eyed goodbyes as half our group continued on for another week leaving the rest of our friends with some unfortunate FOMO. As always, it’s never goodbye but until we meet again! Us that remained played some airport games and shared stories of our previous trips while we waited for our flight to Joburg. And we even gained a few new friends along the way! We welcomed Tara, Connor, Sam, and Keshia as we learned about Nelson Mandela’s legacy in the abolishment of apartheid at the Capture Site on our way out to Durban! Yesterday we celebrated #pinotageday and the @middelvlei_wine Free-Run Pinotage was perfect for the celebrations! 🍷 I could not have thought of a better way then to celebrate with @middelvlei_wine who is well known for their rich history, exquisite wine and lekker boerie braai’s. More about the Free-Run Pinotage 2022: A proudly South African cultivar, the Momberg’s are amongst the foremost producers of Pinotage wines in Stellenbosch. This Pinotage grapes came from a registered “Single Vineyard” called “Granite Rock Block” and were planted on Middelvlei in 2010. The vineyards face west and benefit from the cooler slopes during the hot summer months. The rows are planted from north to south at an altitude of 160m above sea-level. The vines, grown as bush vines, are severely pruned to inhibit their prolific growth. The average rainfall is 700ml per annum. The rainfall was 731 mm for the 2021/2022 season. Although the vineyards benefit greatly from the water retentive clay soil, the vines are irrigated. Harvesting took place in February 2022 during the day, at an average sugar level of 24.5° balling. The grapes were hand-picked and placed in small baskets to prevent bruising. In the cellar, using the dry yeast type NT50, the juice was fermented on the skins for three days in open cement tanks at 25°C. It was racked off the skins and then underwent secondary malolactic fermentation, which was completed in March 2022. The Middelvlei Pinotage is made from 100% free-run juice. Free-run juice is the juice which naturally drains off from the mass of freshly fermented grapes. We do not press the grapes after fermentation. This results in superior quality because the wine contains gentler tannins. Enjoy the rewarding flavours of raspberries, mulberries and elegant oak spices. The soft tannins are beautifully balanced by the fruit weight with creamy vanilla flavours that lingers on the palate. 100% Proudly South African. Een wijnproeverij, waar kan je dit beter doen dan in Stellenbosch? We hebben een overnachting geboekt op wijnboerderij Middelvlei zodat we na de wijnproeverij niet meer hoeven te rijden. Vorig jaar hebben we in Canada ook een wijnproeverij met de kinderen gedaan, dus toen we vertelden wat we gingen doen waren ze meteen enthousiast. De kinderen krijgen vruchtensapjes met bijbehorende snoepjes en opdrachten bij hun eigen proeverij. Wat zijn ze trots. Wij hebben naast de wijnproeverij twee heerlijke plankjes met tapas.
