Today was bring your kid to work day. My daughter has been asking to come to work with me nonstop for years. It is so sweet and makes me so happy to see how proud she is of me and how much she wants to be like me. For obvious reasons I can’t bring her with me to the hospital. I had no idea how big of a deal the school and peers would make this day. I felt heartbroken going off to work (also leaving my new baby as I go back from leave!) and seeing her disappointment. I had big feelings too. I wanted to fix everything. But instead I made myself sit with it. I validated everyone’s emotions and let us just feel sad. I talked about how life is filled with disappointment like this. We will never be able to do every activity. This was an opportunity to realize that life isn’t always fair, either. Although our missing out wasn’t due to a lack of privilege there were many kids who would be unable to participate for that reason. Being allowed and logistically able to bring your kid to work is certainly a privilege. When we had our fill of tears and hugs I went into usual mom mode. I didn’t want to fix this away or brush past accepting challenges. I think learning to work through disappointment and big feelings is important. But finding solutions to get through the day is important too, as long as feelings are felt and resilience is still being built. So, a 💡went off: if we can’t go to mommy’s work, let’s bring mommy’s work to school! I grabbed an old conference name tag of mine as a “doctor badge,” helped my daughter choose a fancy doctor outfit, lent her my stethoscope, reflex hammer, and handed her lots of stickers to give out to her classmates— the “patients.” We would debrief after both of us doctors got home and could do our charting together. It worked. My daughter went off to school excited to take on this new “responsibility” and I went off to work feeling far less heartbroken. Disappointment isn’t something to fear, and while we mitigate it as best we can the bigger journey is learning how to live with — and through— it. #mom #moms #mother #motherhood #momlife #parent #parents #parentlikeapediatrician #parenting #parentingwin #momfail #workingmom

Hey, girl… Don’t be so hard on yourself. As if this past week wasn’t overwhelming enough, it was also prom week. So many things to schedule and mark off the list: alterations, manicure, pedicure, shoes, accessories, skin care, flowers… Gen Z prom has more prep than my wedding. And I completely fumbled the ball more than once. I got the shoes ordered in time!!! And totally missed ordering the handbag. Also, totally forgot to order the boutonnière. I did not realize my lapse in memory until the night before the big dance. I fumbled. But I recovered! Alterations were done just under the wire. We found an acceptable handbag replacement at an actual brick and mortar store. The florist took pity on my frantic request for a last minute boutonnière and created something perfect. All items were picked up the morning of prom and it lessened my mom guilt a smidge. This prom will be memorable for both of us.

Inflated all of these and THEN thought to google how long helium lasts in balloons….. let’s just say it’s not until tomorrow at noon like I’d hoped….. #momfail

This is what unmedicated ADHD looks like. I put the expensive $26 fundraiser cookies on to bake for the kids and got side tracked by watering my plants. Then decided to cut some of my hydrangeas to propagate. Once they were well watered and cut, I placed them in water and started on another project. We placed mulch and rocks around the rose beds we planted infront of the fence. Then seeing the unfinished fence, I had to finish staining some 2x4s for the project. While finishing that I decided to stain the deck. Tim talked me out of that so I went in to wash the stain brush and place in the fridge to use tomorrow. Walked in to a smoke filled house and the cookies were completely burned. Sat down outside after opening all the windows and cutting the whole house vent on and realized the stain brush is still sitting in the sink needing to be placed in the fridge. Idk how long the cookies were baking and the crazy thing is I had the alarm set. #momfail #adhdproblems #adhd
