MGM isn’t the only legendary Hollywood studio celebrating the Big Double-0… Columbia Pictures also turns 100 years old this year. Brothers Harry and Jack Cohn took Columbia from its hard scrabble roots on Poverty Row to a stunning sweep of the Academy Awards in just 10 years. To be honest, the studio specialized in junior budget, B-movies during its first 30 years, but when they did A-pictures, they killed it. Yes, studio boss Harry Cohn was a hard-nosed tyrant, but it wasn’t all about him. I’ve read the autobiographies of Frank Capra (Director), Joseph Walker (Cinematographer), Edward Bernds (Sound Engineer and Director). Harry Cohn’s (well-hidden) genius was revealed in his knack for hiring people who could make something great out of nothing much. From set and costume designers to cameramen and lighting grips, Columbia could make a lowly rock shine just like the torch in Lady Liberty’s upraised hand. 1) Harry Cohn at the front entrance of his pride and joy at 1438 N Gower St, now Sunset Gower Studios. 2) Actor James Stewart and director Frank Capra appear ready to tackle a day of shooting MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (1939). 3) 1438, where it all started. 4) A young Margarita Cansino looks psyched to start her journey on becoming Rita Hayworth, Columbia’s biggest homegrown star. 5) These guys kept Columbia’s feature films in front of audiences. Year after year, exhibitors were forced to book Columbia’s full slate of films to get the wildly popular Three Stooges’ shorts. 6) If you can’t beat them, join them. Columbia’s Screen Gems TV subsidiary pioneered filmed TV series production at the major studios. 7) Cary Grant and Jean Arthur were mainstays at Columbia in the late 1930’s. This mural is located at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, Columbia’s home since 1992. 8) Harry Cohn always envied his rival Louis B. Mayer for having such a glamorous and successful studio. What would Harry think now? His Columbia sign can be seen for miles, high atop the former MGM lot. Veronica Lake and Joel McCrae appear to be sporting the hobo look outside of Stage 12. Stage 12 at Paramount Studios began its life (as Stage 13) under a cloud of smoke. A subdivided structure housing Stages 11, 12, 13 and 14 had been quickly built to help propel Paramount into the sound era, but tragedy struck just as construction was completed. (Inset in Photo 1) From the Los Angeles Times (1/17/1929): “Fire destroyed the new $450,000 soundproof talking picture stage of Paramount-Famous-Lasky studios on Melrose Avenue last night and five firemen and three civilian workers were injured while combating the flames. The blaze was discovered about 6 o’clock by (an employee) in the cutting department. Shortly afterwards, flames shot high into the sky and could be seen for miles. When the fire department arrived, the entire top of the structure was aflame… The soundproof building had just been completed and preparations had been made to celebrate the opening with a dance on Saturday night. The new equipment designed to make talking pictures had not been uncrated and had not been moved into the building. Had the equipment been in the building, it would have increased the loss to almost $1,000,000, studio officials assert… The fire is believed to have been caused by defective wiring. The building has been designed to hold five stages and was considered the last word for production of sound pictures.” The dance was called off, of course, and construction crews went back to work. Paramount executive Adolph Zukor lamented, “We’ll be out of business in six months.” The lot’s older stages hadn’t been soundproofed yet, so new talkies would have to wait. However, the studio adjusted its production schedule so that scenes requiring quiet surroundings were filmed in the wee hours of the morning. Stage 12 went on to host filming of scenes from the titles seen here as well as hundreds more.
