In Loving Memory of Jon Runyon 🫶🏼 . . . A few months before his passing, Jon sent me an email with this audio in slide 2. A piece he called “Blackbird Song”, that he produced and wrote for his 3 year old son. You can hear the immense passion in Jon’s singing and guitar playing, which really drives home just how much creating this piece meant to him as a father, as a guardian, and as a protector. I never had the chance to listen to it until I came across it when scrolling through some old emails months later…I missed it 😔… On my trips home back from Icon Collective, we would talk about creating something together one day and collaborating. Crossing our genres and making something of our own. Sadly, that day never came. Shortly after receiving the news, a little voice popped in my head and told me to check through some old emails, because I vaguely remembered seeing something from Jon a few months back, but didn’t remember what it was. Thats when I came across this audio project that he sent me from Bandcamp. And I just began to play around, and this song basically wrote itself. It really helped me cope a lot. And I began to fall in love with it. I was determined at that point to make this collab happen and give Jon’s family & friends a piece of him to hold onto forever, me included. I felt a calling on my heart from the universe, to take this idea and transform it into OUR long lost collab 💙 I striped Jon’s vocal and guitar from the original recording and sampled some other ear candy bits, and warped them to fit in time. So, all the guitar and vocals you hear within the track are all Jon. Even this cover art is one of his pictures. I wanted to keep the material raw, while polishing/adjusting them just enough to seamlessly blend together. I’m really proud of our final product and couldn’t be more honored to share it with the world this Tuesday. I know this is what Jon would’ve wanted. ❤️ . . Today, I revisited the timeless track “Where Is The Love?” by The Black Eyed Peas, and it resonated with me more profoundly than I expected. In a world where headlines often seem like a relentless wave of negativity, this song feels more relevant than ever, compelling us to seek out the light amidst the darkness. It powerfully reminds us that compassion, understanding, and love are not merely words; they are actions we must live by every day. Are we actively contributing to the love and peace we desire to see in the world? With its poignant message, “Where Is The Love?” calls on each of us to introspect and question, “Where is the love?” Love, at the end of the day, is not just an emotion—it’s a decision, a pledge to embody understanding, empathy, and kindness, even when they’re most difficult to muster. It appears that today, many prefer to make assumptions and engage in verbal attacks rather than approach situations with understanding, curiosity, and compassion. We often seek to confirm our biases, dismissing anyone or anything that contradicts them. Many are quick to assume they are correct, dismissing others without attempting to listen or observe. Villainizing those who disagree with us is not the solution. True love is shown when we open our minds to listen to others’ perspectives. This doesn’t necessarily mean we have to agree with them, but we should strive to understand them.
