Snowy Hillside (yes it is May…in Canada) This Bighorn Sheep ewe matriarch was eyeing me up as I tried to capture a photo of her little group that she so dutifully cares for, leading them to food sources and road salts. Only group of kids I know who gladly eat their minerals. COOL FACTS: 👉”Yes, they lick salt off the road (they love salt and travel far to get to mineral licks). But they also eat gravel, in part to get some essential minerals. Gravel also aids in their digestion of the tough grasses and lichens they eat. And they eat asphalt because it tastes sweet, though it’s not good for them.“ ~ Friends of the Kananaskis Kananaskis.org/bighorn-sheep #bighornsheep #rockymountainbighornsheep #wildlifeofcanada #alpinewildlife #discoveralberta #explorekananaskis #wildlifephotography #women_photographyworldwide #wildlife #raw_allnature #raw_wildlife #mykananaskis

Through the willows… This may be a different moose from last post. That one I had spotted through the lodgepole pines in the evening, and this one was foraging in the willows early next morning. I only took this one pose and it’s not clear enough to determine if it has the buds where the antlers will be coming in. I had just turned a corner along the trail and came face to face with this beauty. With my big pup beside me (on-leash, of course), I quickly took a couple shots while it stared at my rude interruption, then I calmly turned and walked back the way I came so they could get back to their breakfast and see that the dog was no threat as we retreated. We were probably 75-100m away, so it was all good, but still… I hate interrupting wildlife 😅and this moose did not go back to eating in our presence so it was best we moooved along. Kudos to my photography assistant pup who stands and stares at wildlife quietly while I take my shot. It’s only deer at the city parks that get him excited because he wants to play with them so bad (= Husky whining 🙄). #moose #moosemonday #mooseinwillows #albertawildlife #mykananaskis #kananaskiscountry #worldshares #rockymountainwildlife #oh_canada_ #raw_canada #raw_wildlife #sharecangeo #canadianwildlife #explorealberta #discoveralberta #natgeowild #wildlifephotography #naturelovers #womenwhoexplorealberta

Through the pines… Took a few days off to hike and enjoy the last bit of winter in the mountains 🥲 and was presented with this gift of a moose at rest, albeit through a gazillion lodgepole pines. Truly a miracle my camera could focus through all the branches. The parks person mentioned a mama that had been seen around those parts with a calf, however on zooming in, it looks like this is a bull moose that has dropped his antlers? I don’t know much about moose, but I do know they drop their antlers between November and January, with younger bull moose hanging onto theirs sometime until April. Taken with a long lens from a safe distance and cropped. #moose #bullmoose #mooselover #albertawildlife #mykananaskis #wildlifephotography #raw_canada #sharecangeo #rockymountainwildlife #worldshares

Picture proof of my one and only day on the touring skis this season🎿🥲 Been having some fomo for bluebird pow days and big backcountry adventures, but I'm choosing to focus on all the fun activities my body and brain have continued to feel comfortable and confident doing this winter. It's been a pretty great season overall and while I'm not writing off the possibility of a few more ski days yet, considering my winter jacket no longer zips up I'm realllllly banking on spring being right around the corner!🤰😅 #happydays #chesterlake #backcountryskiing #skitouring #kcountry #mykananaskis #fitpregnancy #activepregnancy #pregnancyjourney #mountainmama #momtobe #outdoorwomen #sheskis #skilove #justkeepskiing #girlgetoutside #goodtimesoutside #choosemountains #albertaadventuregirls #likeamountaingirl

Happy International Women’s Day ☀️ Every year when this day comes around I think about all of the photos I could share. I am so privileged to work in a field that celebrates women’s strength and beauty. Photos capture the love, care and devotion of mothers, life partners and business owners. We are blessed with a community that supports and elevates each other. So basically any image shared during the whole year could be shared today. But I always go back to my mom on this day. Because she is my first source of strength and inspiration. She overcame mountains and pushed through adversity in a way that is inspiring and watching her can only make you want to be a better person. She taught me to be independent and allowed me to take chances — such as moving across the country with a car, a few boxes and not much in the bank — because she encouraged individuality and autonomy, while providing the safety of having her there to catch me if I needed her. She’s my hero. My mom.

Full body view - American Three-toed Woodpecker Most woodpeckers have 4 toes, except for two species found in North America: Three-toed and the Black-backed. Surely you would think four toes is an advantage over three, so I did some research trying to find out how this difference affects foraging. Turns out, three toes allows the woodpecker to lean further back, striking the tree with more force to expose their food source more efficiently. 🤯 #threetoedwoodpecker #americanthreetoedwoodpecker #woodpecker #woodpeckersofinstagram #birdsofalberta #birdwatchers_daily #isawabird #birdsofnorthamerica #kananaskisbirds #birdsofthekananaskis #mykananaskis #bird_brilliance #naturelovers #borealbirds #nuts_about_birds #your_best_birds #freshbreezeclub #bns_birds #sharecangeo #cangeo #birds #1birdshot #exclusivebird

Rat-a-tat-stop-for-photo-rat-a-tat-tat This is only the 2nd time I’ve spotted an American Three-toed Woodpecker, and both were in old forest areas where the bearded lichen usnea hangs lazily from branches. Aurora borealis from a year ago today. Our night started with a bright moon and fast moving clouds that covered the sky and ruined our chances to see the aurora. My friend and I gave up and parted ways. I still decided to drive east in the hopes of finding clear skies when I started receiving texts from my friend: clouds indeed thinning out to the East and he was witnessing one of the best displays he had ever seen! I made my way to an empty parking lot and got to see it for myself. It was truly beautiful to watch the lights dance, I even had a dance myself I was so happy!

Eisenhower peeking out from between the clouds ⛅️ We woke up Monday morning in a cozy log cabin at @storm_mountain_lodge. The previous day, the skies were snowing relentlessly and visibility was zero. We didn’t have high expectations for views, but we were pleasantly surprised when we woke up! Swirling clouds and peaks momentarily shining through the mist greeted us as we rubbed the sleep from our eyes. These conditions were magic. In fact, I almost made Justin late for work because I wanted to stop every five minutes on the drive home to take it all in 😂 I love this place we call home 🏔️ #landscape #photography #exploretocreate #castlemountain #canonphotography #choosemountains #hike #winter #shotoncanon #exploremore #travelalberta #hikealberta #beautiful #explorealberta #discoveralberta #travel #explore #discover #visit #kananaskis #mykcountry #mybanff #womenwhoexplore #womenwhohike #adventure #backyard #mykananaskis #banff #winterphotography

What to wear for winter photos? The things to consider: 1) The temperature. 2) Everything behind you will be white… or brown… because the same blanket of white snow that covers the mountains doesn’t always exist in the city. So. Dress for the weather. Shoes too. AVOID BLACK. Black creates a harsh tone with the snow and the textures get lost in the shadows which can create a flat look to the photos. It is also not ideal with the brown tones we see in the city at this time of the year. CHOOSE Brown, gold, cream and white. Then add a pop of colour. You will stand out against the scenery and it makes the photos look bright, vibrant and happy. LAYER UP Choose a base layer, and bring a couple of sweaters or jackets, scarves, mittens and blankets. This will add colour and texture. Different types of materials will also add texture which is great for winter photos; wool scarves, knitted sweaters, denim, or slim puffer jackets are all great examples. Wear a stylish boot. The @uggcanada Adirondack boot and @blundstoneca boot are at the top of my list. Stylish AND warm. And as always, start with the toughest person to dress, and work your way from there. Lay everything out on a bed where you can get a good picture of what everything looks like together. Then get everyone to try clothes on and narrow down your options. And finally, pick a style that feels right to you. Comment below with questions or input!

Just out here chasing that childhood innocence with a camera in hand that has led me down this long road. My friend and I headed out to this ice cave last week, I had a shot in mind but needed to do an initial scout. The ice cave has collapsed and will no longer work for what I wanted but it still makes for a pretty incredible space. There’s something incredibly unique about winter hiking, especially when it leads you to an ice cave. As we crossed the frozen lake at the foot of the glacier we spaced ourselves out, glaciers are flowing, albeit slower in the winter we still had a handful of heart stopping cracks and pops as the weight of our footsteps shifted the delicate structure of the ice. It’s a constant reminder that things are alive around you, the snow and ice are ever shifting, and once you enter into the cave itself it’s only intensified as the cave acts as an amplifier to any small sound around you. #adventure #alberta #albertacanada #canada #canadianrockies #enjoycanada #explore #explorealberta #explorecanada #hiking #imagesofcanada #mountains #photography #rockies #travel #wanderlust #mountainlife #mountainviews #explorekananaskis #kananaskis #explorekananaskis #rockymountains #mykananaskis #travelcanada #discovercanada #explorecanada #canada #travelalberta

🐏 WILDLIFE 🐏 I love spotting animals in the wild when I travel to the Rockies! During this trip, I saw numerous adorable mountain sheep (along the Three Sisters Parkway and on Ha Ling Peak), deer, a herd of elk in Canmore, and a coyote walking across the road (not pictured). No moose spotting this time around unfortunately. I loved seeing the fuzzy bums on the mountain sheep and had an urge to kiss them, but resisted 😂 📍Canmore, Alberta (Treaty 7 Territory)

🏔️THREE SISTERS🏔️ These three mountain peaks, called the Three Sisters, are a prominent feature overlooking Canmore, Alberta. In 1883, Albert Rogers named these mountains the Three Nuns after a storm left a heavy veil of snow on the northern face of all three peaks. They were renamed the Three Sisters in 1886 by George Dawson and are individually referred to as the Big Sister (Faith), Middle Sister (Charity) and Little Sister (Hope). This view of the peaks can be found by walking a short ways along the dry creek bed across the highway from the dog park in Canmore. In the summer and fall, there is a pond here where you can beautiful reflections of the mountains. I enjoyed visiting this viewpoint a couple of times during my recent visit to Canmore and these are some of my favourite mountains. 📍Canmore, Alberta (Treaty 7 Territory)

💦TROLL FALLS💦 Yesterday morning, I enjoyed a short and easy hike on the 5 km Troll Falls Trail in Kananaskis. The trail leads through a tall pine forest, opens to a view of the mountains, and then continues to the first of three frozen waterfalls. Troll Falls (photo 4) is a gorgeous waterfall and there is a lookout deck in front to take photos. You cannot get closer to these falls. From there, the trail gains some elevation to the next two falls. The Upper Falls (photo 6) are pretty but a bit smaller. My favourite of the three falls was Marmot Falls (photos 1 and 2). You could actually walk behind the falls to get a really interesting perspective. I loved the shape of these falls overall. This was a peaceful and pretty winter hike with some amazing photo opportunities ❄️ 📍Kananaskis Country (Treaty 7 Territory)

Ta-Da!! Steller’s Jay! (Answer to yesterdays post) This strikingly beautiful corvid was very kind to pose for me as I’d worked hard to hike up snow-covered trails carrying my ridiculously heavy camera and long lens, chatting with my pup the entire way as an alert to the denning Grizzly in the area should he have gotten up to stretch his legs mid-hibernation. COOL FACTS: 👉”Like all Corvids, the Steller’s Jay is also an incredibly intelligent bird. It has been observed using tools to extract insects from tree bark, and is known for caching food for later use. During the summer months, they primarily feed on insects and other invertebrates. In the fall, they switch to a diet that is more heavily focused on nuts and seeds. As noted, these birds are known for their ability to cache food. They will hide or store excess food collected in summer to eat later. In the winter, they must rely on these food caches.“ ~Kananaskis.org #stellersjay #stellerjay #corvid #corvidae #birdsofalberta #kananaskisbirds #birdsofthekananaskis #nuts_about_birds #bird_brilliance #sharecangeo #nature_brilliance #birdphotography #naturelovers #bns_birds #insidecanada #raw_birds #exclusive_birds #bird_freaks #canadianwildlife #explorekananaskis #mykananaskis
