Retour rêveur, hier, après la projection du beau ‘Lettre errante’ de @nurithaviv et la discussion qui s’en est suivie avec @lapidnadav Nurith Aviv y poursuit sa méditation sur la vie polyglotte en s’affrontant cette fois à la question la plus imprenable : qu’est-ce que filmer un phonème ? Pas n’importe lequel. Le R – soit le plus inassignable d’entre tous, parce que selon les langues où il existe, selon les dialectes dans les langues, selon les normes nationales de la prononciation, selon les genres parfois, il court du fond de la gorge à la pointe de la langue – guttural, roulé, grasseyant, caressé, dévibré etc. R est un Schibboleth, comme le dit joliment Luba Jurgenson dans le film : l’épreuve vocale qui signale l’étranger. Mais R est farceur : on est toujours l’étranger de quelqu’un. R est comme le vent qui fait bruisser des plantes pourtant enracinées : c’est ce que donne à voir Nurith Aviv. Este porém acabou entrando na minha lista de melhores do ano, senão O melhor. Amei! Tipo de filme que eu gosto, com toda a metalinguagem e crítica ácida (ao estado terrorista de Israel, ao sistema capitalista, a cultura de guerra, a normalização de uma realidade orwelliana ou tantas outras coisas). Nadav Lapid se faz tão necessário e talvez um dos maiores diretores da atualidade. A parte técnica é simplesmente maravilhosa e toda a construção da história com a explosão verborrágica em uma das cenas mais emblemáticas dos últimos anos. Policeman (2011) - Dir. Nadav Lapid No matter which political lens you look through, Israel is a fascinating country, with a fascinating history. This history and current reality permeate this movie and it opens up a closed sub-culture within a tumultuous larger society. Policeman is an interesting drama that might not be as good as two similar films - Elite Squad (2007) and Incendies (2010), but it still packs a powerful punch. Yiftach Klein plays Yaron, leader of a five man Anti-Terrorism unit, within the police force. This elite crew are a cross between a SWAT team and the military’s special forces, and they share a tight bond. They socialize away from work together and you get the impression their lives are deeply entwined. We see them working out together and BBQing, embodying the military machismo. But Yaron has problems too. His best friend on the team has what appears to be a terminal illness and this rocks his sense of invincibility. While they are still on active duty, in the background the unit is being investigated for an operation that went wrong and where Palestinian civilians were wounded. Yaron is torn between the cold practicality of asking his friend to take the fall, as his condition will preclude prosecution, or for the unit to take the hit and his friend’s reputation to remain untarnished. Amid this drama intrudes a small group of left-wing radicals, intent on hijacking and killing. Their group dynamics are equally as messy and emotional, and their political stance equally as rigid. The two groups are on collision course, which will have far-reaching consequences for them all. The movie leaves the Palestinian conflict bubbling in the background and focuses elsewhere. Ahh 2019. Simpler times, before we knew the true meaning of the word “pandemic” and before we all started baking bread and starting film blog accounts. Here were my fave films from 2019- THE NIGHTINGALE Jennifer Kent’s visceral, traumatic and haunting tale of revenge set in colonial Australia. Severely messed up but important. SYNONYMS I’ve banged on about this film on this page enough. THE FAREWELL Lulu Wang’s beautiful and emotive film about keeping a secret from a loved one to better their health, strikingly shot with a stirring and moving ending sequence. Awkwafina is brilliant. PORTRAIT Céline Sciamma’s period drama filled with lots of shots of longing stares burning with passion between her two protagonists is beautiful. The campfire sequence with the chanting completely blew me away. CLIMAX Gaspar Noé returns with another deranged and horrific nightmare acid trip, yay! This is worth watching for the opening dance sequence alone. #Opinion | We invited one of the world’s most eminent filmmakers, #NadavLapid, to preside over the jury of our International Film Festival, but couldn’t accept his honest criticism of an Indian film. As Lapid put it, “In a way, it was my duty, my obligation. I was invited to be frank, not to speak vanities.” That candour may have surprised and hurt us, but we lacked the strength and moral fibre to cheerfully tolerate it. Worse, we deliberately chose to misconstrue what Lapid said. If we had paused to think for even a moment, we’d have known how wrong we were. But we didn’t. Once Lapid’s criticism hurt our pride, we resorted to deliberately distorting his critique and view it as an attack on our nationalism, indeed on ourselves. But as Lapid explained, “Criticising a movie is not criticising India or criticising what happened in #Kashmir.” We want the IFFI to be recognised as one of the world’s best. If that is to happen, we know we must scrupulously ensure the highest artistic and aesthetic quality of the films it features. So why was #TheKashmirFiles chosen? Ensuring a window to the world for a tragedy that’s been ignored obliterated all consideration of the fact that this movie does not show our film industry at its best. Whether or not Lapid was right to criticise is a legitimate question. But it is also a small matter. A far bigger concern was our behaviour. « LE GENOU D’AHED » de Nadav LAPID (2021) C'est la première fois que je regarde un film de Nadav Lapid et j'ai été frappé à quel point c'est un cinéaste révolté contre beaucoup de choses. Il y a donc bien un film intéressant à voir dans celui-ci mais il faut beaucoup de patience car c'est un cinéma vraiment exigeant qui n'est pas à la portée du grand public ! On en ressort presque autant en colère que le réalisateur vis à vis de son propre pays, en ne sachant s'il faut l'aimer ou le haïr ; ce qui est un étrange sentiment. Le cadrage caméra à l'épaule m'a donné l'impression d'être dans un grand huit où il faut s'accrocher; j'avoue que je n'ai pas vraiment apprécié le parti pris du réalisateur avec sa mise en scène.. On peut clairement y voir une mise en abime avec ce réalisateur qui met en scène son alter ego. Que l'on adhère ou pas, le cinéaste se veut sincère dans son discours plus ou moins marquant contre la censure et la politique israélienne. On trouvera des qualités à ce film mais pour ma part, je n'ai pas réussi à entrer dans l'histoire comme je l'espérais ! Et vous, l’avez vous vu ? Qu’en avez-vous pensé ? Of course, jury selection for the IFFI is done by the National Film Development Corporation – which comes under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting – in association with the Goa government. Given the ideological bonhomie between the current ruling establishment in India and a right-wing establishment in Israel, it may have been thought that an expert of Jewish descent would be most congenial as jury chief to the intended thrust of the festival. In the Hindutva imagination, all those born Jewish are thought to be Zionist nationalists after all, endemically averse to ‘Muslim’ causes or perceptions. What was insufficiently understood is that, brutal as the Zionist occupation of Palestine continues to be, within Israel itself intellectual and artistic freedom remains alive, as do sections of a defiant media. A student of philosophy, with a career-long exposure to the best of European cinema, Lapid’s movies have been characterised by a deep sense of complexity beyond what our polemical concerns often look for. Politically, if at one level Lapid owns his cultural Jewishness with pride, on the other he has tended to be openly critical of the unjustified Zionist project with respect to Palestine. He was one of 250 signatories to a document which opposed the establishment of a West Bank Fund, which the signatories saw as a calculated attempt to incorporate the artistic community to “whitewash the occupation”. To those who are comparing the Schindler's List with the Kashmir Files. The main protagonist of the former is a German white (Aryan, in Hitler's terms) and thus by no means demonises the German people. Same goes to masterpieces like the Pianist which shows sympathetic and humane German characters. Now there might be holocaust films that don't positive German characters. But that wouldn't cause any real damage as most of the world doesn't relate modern Germans with Nazis anymore. Neither would a French, Polish or Jewish audience shout "German kaate jaayenge! Hurray hurray chillaayenge!" after watching a holocaust movie.
