Still trying to play catch up here and I apologize for going silent on the page but I have had some more hours at work and my personal life to focus on. But I promise to do my best to continue posting as much as possible. I’m here to talk about Kung Fu Panda 4 and no better time to do it then after it crosses the $500 million mark. I think this fourth installment is a lot of fun and I was very happy walking out of the theater. Let’s just go ahead and jump down to the pros and cons. Pros: 🟢this had some of the best humor of the franchise and had some genuine laugh out loud moments 🟢cutting back on the amount of side characters worked out well as the journey felt more personal and contained to Po 🟢I loved Viola Davis as The Chameleon. May not be the most compelling villain story wise but her voice work is incredible 🟢this had some of the best action sequences of the franchise. It was fun watching Po and his new sidekick Zhen fight side by side Cons: 🔴although less characters led to a better story, it still felt like there was hole left behind by the Furious Five’s absence. It was obvious they couldn’t get the voice actors back and just wrote them out 🔴the inclusion of past villains was fun to see but they do absolutely nothing for the story and have no moments that are memorable 🔴I was not a fan of Master Shifu’s regression into an annoyed old master who argues and becomes furious with Po. Felt like his development in the other movies was for nothing It wasn’t the best of the Kung Fu Panda movies but it was a solid entry. Best action, better humor, and a more intimate stoey make this a standout in recent animation. Still has its struggles but it was a blast to see and I think Dreamworks can keep this franchise alive just a little longer. • • • Did you see Kung Fu Panda 4? Oito anos após o último filme de uma trilogia, Kung Fu Panda retorna com um novo filme tido como um recomeço da franquia. Assim como todo filme que retorna após tido como um fim, necessita de uma justificativa. É difícil trazer justificativa plausível quando os estúdios apostam seguro em franquias já renomadas. Dessa forma, não há qualquer justificativa para a existência desse filme, há não ser o lucro que ele vai gerar a DreamWorks. Embora seja bem divertido, Kung Fu Panda 4 se assemelha muito ao quarto filme de Toy Story que é divertido, não chega a ser ruim, mas também não justifica a existência. Embora o roteiro tente expandir o universo com novos ares, até mesmo novo elenco de apoio, tudo parece mais do mesmo ou uma tentativa clara de querer ser uma sequência mais ao mesmo tempo trazer algo novo para os recém-chegados. Os melhores momentos do longa são justamente onde o conceito é bem executado. Nesse quesito, o destaque é para a Zheng que vai além do papel de aliada improvável e apresenta um mistério que entretém conforme se revela. Para entender quem ela é e de onde veio, o panda conhece lugares e figuras que acrescentam muito à produção, especialmente no quesito humor. O problema está nos momentos menos inspirados onde o texto não sabe trabalhar os poderes dos personagens ou até a própria vilã do filme. A animação ao menos está mais bonita, os traços estão ainda melhores e muito graças a direção de arte bem estilizada. Não há uma ruptura ao que foi feito antes, mas um aperfeiçoamento que torna a experiência ainda melhor. Essa melhora fica evidente na textura de personagens, objetos, além da coesão entre os diferentes tipos de cenários. As cenas de ação divertem e o filme sabe dosar bem entre os momentos sérios e os de comédia. Embora não justifique a existência, o saldo final de Kung Fu Panda 4 é bastante satisfatório. Apesar de alguns problemas narrativos e a indefinição entre o velho e novo, o longa sabe divertir e ser nostálgico quando preciso e isso parece bastar para os realizadores e até para o público. #kungfupanda4 is a decent film that will always live in the shadow of its near perfect predecessors. The plot revolves around the revelation that #po can no longer be the #dragonwarrior and he must choose his successor. However, Po refuses to give up the mantle and embarks on a perilous journey to stop a shapeshifting villain from obtaining the power of #kungfu. The premise is really stupid and contradicts the pre-established lore. The writers just wanted to introduce a new character because they couldn’t afford to bring back the voices of the #furiousfive. Fortunately, the new additions to the cast are solid, yet, underwhelming compared to the original one. The voice acting is mostly phenomenal, with a few exceptions ( #awkwafina). However, the villain’s motive and personality are cliche, boring and very superficially written; and the relationship formed between Awkwafina’s character and Po is structurally generic, follows every cliche on the book and, while it is set up to be the emotional hook in the #movie, causes apathy towards the characters. The writing is more childish than in the previous movies and the dialogue feels more direct, on the nose, and dumbed down so the “kids can understand”. The movie feels soulless and lacks inspiration. Fortunately the film is at least entertaining, has decent characters, a fantastic score, funny jokes, cool visuals, amazing settings, and competent #animation. On the other hand, the storyline doesn’t take any risks and solely relies on archetypes, overused twists, a predictable outcome and a generic story structure. However, it did have some funny moments and I did quite enjoy the plot. I really liked the villain and what they did at the end *SPOILER* they brought a lot of the old villains back which was cool. The reason I think it pales in comparison is because it didn’t have the furious five (I think they had a smaller budget, couldn’t get the actors perhaps?) and although it had some thrilling action sequences I just thought it was somewhat bland elsewhere. I don’t think having awkwafina in it helped as I find her voice acting a bit annoying - but nonetheless love her in other stuff. Connor's Review: I liked the animation and the return of some classic characters. However, if I'm honest this is one of those films that you forget you've watched. There weren't any big moments that stood out to me and the story was fairly lazy. It's a shame because I love the other three films, but I doubt I'd watch this again. KUNG FU PANDA 4 (2024) Director - Mike Mitchell Writer - Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger, Darren Lemke Cinematography - Joshua Gunther Music - Hans Zimmer, Steve Mazzaro Cast - Jack Black, Awkwafina, Bryan Cranston, James Hong, Ian McShane, Ke Huy Quan, Dustin Hoffman, Viola Davis After Po is tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, he needs to find and train a new Dragon Warrior, while a wicked sorceress plans to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm. I think they should’ve stopped at third film and end it with a perfect trilogy since the previous three was great, the second was my favorite for the details in the animation and visuals, the storytelling, there’s an emotional side in the story and I feel like Lord Shen was the best villain out of all Kung Fu Panda villains. In the fourth film, it didn’t feel right without the presence of the Furious Five as I think they are one of the core elements in Po’s life. Kung Fu Panda 4 lacks depth in the narrative, it’s missing its spark and charm that was once there in the trilogy, the warm spiritual messages and quotes weren’t as memorable either. The story was dull and inspiring, it was bland and fell flat with its fast pacing, it seemed forced and rushed. The fight scenes weren’t as impressive either especially in this one scene where Po had to fight a number of guards in a thick fog, and the final boss fight was anticlimactic. The antagonist lacked background story for her character and her motives were pretty weak, it wasn’t as intimidating as Tai Lung, Lord Shen and Kai. Voice acting was overall satisfactory, Jack Black was energetic as usual, Awkwafina was amusing, Viola Davis was terrific. Adults and kids might’ve enjoyed the trilogy but this one seems to cater only for kids for its animation and visuals. This fourth film seems unnecessary to me and since it was confirmed to be a six-film series, I’m just hoping for the best and they’re able to bounce back for the next two films since this took a downturn, in my opinion. This wasn’t as fun as the trilogy, it’s predictable and underwhelming but I still had a good time and made a few laughs. RATING: 4/10
