Some night pictures on a wander around St.Pauls Cathedral, Paternoster Square, St. Bartholomeu, Smithfields and the Maughan Library. The first picture includes the National Fire Fighters Memorial and fire fighters saved St. Paul's Cathedral during the Blitz. At the time of the Blitz my father was a 'fire runner' around Westminster Abbey and Parliament, bringing the attention of fireman to any fires and trying to put out incendiaries (thermite with a magnesium casing that burns hot and can start a fire) before a fire could take hold, usuallly by stamping on them or using a bucket of water on them. Like a small bomb they did not explode but a trigger would ignite the incendiary on impact. Standing quite near to Saint Paul's Cathedral near the banks of the River Thames, the National Firefighter's Memorial is a solemn, oft forgotten reminder that some of the bravest of our fighters actually died on British soil. While a great many British cities endured the malign attentions of the Luftwaffe, it was London that endured the most consistent, carefully targeted hail of bombs. Beginning on September 7th, 1940, the Luftwaffe attacked the capital over fifty- seven consecutive nights. In the first three weeks alone, the London Fire Brigade dealt with over ten thousand conflagrations. The personal human courage required in trying to counter continual outbreaks amid a sea of blackened, falling rubble, in streets strewn with debris of all kinds, defies adequate comprehension. Firefighters also had to run the gamut of numerous unexploded bombs that possessed the potential to explode at any given moment. In all, more than nine hundred men and women of the Fire Service lost their lives during World War Two. It was unveiled by the Queen Mother in 1991, to originally commemorate firefighters who fought against fires in London, during the Blitz in World War II, but is now a national monument to all firefighters who have died in the line of duty. 🎄🔔 Next up is St Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London, at Christmastime a few years ago. The current church was designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the C17th, and was built as part of a major reconstruction of the City following the Great Fire of London. In the foreground is the National Firefighters Memorial, depicting firefighters in action during the ‘Second Great Fire of London.’ The Christmas of 1940 was like no other that Londoners would experience, as the city was gripped by 57 consecutive nights of bombing during the Blitz. On the night of 29th-30th December 1940, the ‘Second Great Fire,’ 100,000 incendiary bombs were dropped on the city. St Paul’s Cathedral had to be “saved at all costs,” a direct order from Churchill, and despite being surrounded by a sea of flames it was saved, thanks to the efforts of the St Paul’s Watch and the firefighters of London. American correspondent Ernie Pyle observed the raid… “Into the dark shadowed spaces below us, while we watched, whole batches of incendiary bombs fell. We saw two dozen go off in two seconds. They flashed terrifically, then quickly simmered down to pin points of dazzling white, burning ferociously... The greatest of all the fires was directly in front of us. Flames seemed to whip hundreds of feet into the air. Pinkish-white smoke ballooned upward in a great cloud, and out of this cloud there gradually took shape—so faintly at first that we weren't sure we saw correctly—the gigantic dome of St Paul's Cathedral. St Paul's was surrounded by fire, but it came through. It stood there in its enormous proportions—growing slowly clearer and clearer, the way objects take shape at dawn. It was like a picture of some miraculous figure that appears before peace-hungry soldiers on a battlefield.” Over 1000 firefighters were killed and 6,000 seriously injured during WW2, and over 40,000 civilians were killed, with 2 million homes destroyed. Unfortunately, 82 firefighters died serving their communities in 2019, and we know there will be more names added to the memorial for the 2020 year, which will be done in 2021. Sadly, one of those names will be Charles Morton, who died in fighting the El Dorado Fire in Yucaipa. The National Firefighters Memorial is composed of three bronze statues depicting firefighters in action at the height of the Blitz. The monument was commissioned by the Firefighters Memorial Charitable Trust set up in 1990, and originally it was intended as a tribute to those men and women who fought against the fires on the streets of London during World War II, when the city was struck by bombs on 57 consecutive nights. In 1998 the memorial was made a national monument that would commemorate the lives of all firefighters throughout the UK who were killed in the line of duty. It was moved from its original site in Old Change Court, the plinth was elevated, and the names of all those killed in peacetime were added. There are 1,192 names inscribed onto the memorial.
