Remembering my grandfather Don today who raised me along with my grandmother Jane. On May 2 back in 1983, I came home from school and my whole world was turned upside down after being told he had passed away at a hotel on a business trip the night before. While it is rough to lose a parent at such a young age, the memories of time spent together remain forever within my heart. My love of baseball and the Cincinnati Reds, westerns and WW2 movies, classic Hollywood actors such as John Wayne and Robert Mitchum, an amazing sense of humor, and most of all a caring and loving father figure - these all remain today. Walk of Smiles: Join Us To Remember Your Special Person. On the 15th June we'll be hosting our very special Walk of Smiles event in the grounds of Smiles House in Little Plumstead, the home of Nelson’s Journey. This is an opportunity for children, young people and their families to come and walk in memory of a special person who has died. It's also a chance for any supporters to raise funds by joining the walk and even raise sponsorship too. The event opens at 10am and the walk will start at 11am. There are 2 beautiful countryside routes to walk, either a 2 mile or 2.5 mile distance, the shorter route being pushchair & wheelchair friendly. After the walk, there will be lots of family-friendly activities to take part in, including free arts and crafts, fete-style games and our special Teddy Bear TLC stall, so bring along those cherished stuffed toys for some VIP treatment. The Pets As Therapy dogs will be making an appearance and are always popular with children and grown-ups too! Well-behaved dogs are also welcome on leads and there will be some fun dog awards to enter them into. We will also have our Remembering Rocks activity available for those who wish to remember their special person on the day as well as a number of other lovely activities. Food and refreshments will be available to purchase, however you’re welcome to bring your own picnic to enjoy if you prefer, there's plenty of space to pitch up with your picnic blanket and make the most of the day. I haven’t posted in ages, so here goes… In February my ‘father’ passed away. I had not heard from him all through my breast cancer journey in over 2 years. I sat in the lounge of my sister’s house as he was dying telling my family how much he loved them on the phone. When he did ring me, a few days before he died, it was to ask me to write a letter stating I wanted nothing from him. That was my goodbye. From the ‘man’ who mentally and verbally tortured my mother and me as far back as I remember. I thought I felt peace after he died. That never again would a part of me long for that phone call, that he did love me, that he was sorry. But all I’ve had are nightmares since. Recurring CPTSD. Memories of horrific things I’d forgotten that my brain had blocked to protect me. I only found out today by chance that my family are taking his ashes to his final resting place today. No one told me. I’m trying to let myself feel all the things I would’ve numbed once. Let it all come and go. Dad, I can’t tell you this, but- I know you had a shitty childhood raised by alcoholics. I know we don’t all heal. Maybe if your life had been different or you had looked inside you wouldn’t have passed on all your pain. Maybe I should be ashamed, but I don’t know if I wish you peace.😞I’m sorry. I wish peace for me. I wish all the trauma I experienced because of you would go away. One thing I do know is one day, 5 years and 9 months ago, I took my power back and stopped numbing everything with booze. I vowed I’d never drink over you again. I let you take all my life till then drinking. I didn’t know what else to do. Today, I may feel angry, sad and many other things. But I will make myself hold my head high. I can say I got through everything with the hands I took to help me. That I reach for those hands when I need to instead of drink after drink. That I stopped searching for someone to ‘fix’ me or ‘use’ me to think I’m worthy of being loved. That I’ve become the woman I am through being raw, no numbing, no masking anymore. But feeling and growing and trying to find the worth I never had. That can never be taken from me. May I get to rest in my spirit and soul and be proud of me🥹🙏❤️

I share this post every year on the anniversary of Lucille Ball’s passing. In the summer of 2016, I lived in Jamestown, New York (Lucille Ball’s place of birth). I worked at the Lucy-Desi Museum/National Comedy Center as an intern in the communications and marketing department. It was a great experience! I was lucky to have that internship before my senior year of college. . A few weeks before I left, I knew I wanted to conclude the summer and commemorate Lucille Ball in a special way. I bought flowers and laid them at her gravesite. I spent about 30 minutes there, sitting in front of it and reflecting on Lucy. I knew I was living in the same city that meant so much to her. I wished I could have walked the streets of Jamestown with her, sharing a conversation. So, as I sat at her gravesite, I decided to reflect on these thoughts. I reflected on how much that summer meant to me, and how thankful I am to have grown up watching her shows and movies. I walked around the cemetery, spotted other “Hunt” tombstones (Lucy’s mother’s side of the family), and I felt at peace. It was how I wanted to honor Lucy. I made so many wonderful memories from that summer, but that day was one of the best. 💕 . I love you, Lucy.
