Iain MacLeod Executive Director, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center I was probably about eight years old when I got hooked on birds, back in Scotland, where I grew up. We were on family holiday, touring around the Highlands. We went to a place called Loch Garten, a Preserve of the Royal Society of Protection of Birds, where a pair of ospreys, the first to come back and breed in Scotland after almost fifty years of being extirpated, in 1959, was nesting. I have a vivid memory walking down the pine path, getting to the shed that was a blind set up to look across the pines. I had to stand on a box to see the amazing view of the nest at the top of a pine tree. The male osprey came in with a beautiful blue trout. The female came in and fed the chicks. By the time we left, I had persuaded my father to buy me a little booklet all about ospreys in Scotland, and a field guide to the birds of Britain, Europe, and North Africa, that I still have. The rest of that vacation, I stayed in the back of the car, reading about birds. I have continued to study ospreys ever since. I decided I was going to somehow work with birds. Through determination and volunteering, I became involved with different organizations, got myself known, and started doing short-term contracts working on nature reserves. Then I started my career with the RSPB, the Royal Society of the Protection of birds, the same organization that managed the preserve where the ospreys were. For almost 14 years, Dr. Tara Sirvent has inspired our @vu_stem program students and most recently has been able to access grants to build state of the art labs, classrooms, planters, and even a butterfly conservatory that’s still in the works. She grew up just outside of Casper, Wyoming and actually never considered science as a career someday but rather enjoyed history, playing the cello, and joining the debate team. She lost her mother when she was 10 years old and her father did his best to raise her and her siblings. She was invited to a summer camp by Dianna, her elementary school secretary, and it was there at Camp Beard that she met Jesus. . “I am so thankful to God that He always provides and restores in ways that people need. They (Dianna’s family) almost became like a surrogate family to me and I am so thankful for them and I consider them family today.” . While she received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Wyoming, she turned it down to attend Southern California College now known as Vanguard University. She wanted to grow in her knowledge of the Lord and pursue an undergraduate education that intertwined academics with biblical faith. Today she is the Associate Dean of Natural, Physical and Health Sciences and Director of Grants, Research and Sponsored Programs.
