The white inflorescence and alternate leaves of the Wallum Phebalium (Phebalium woombye). This species can be found in dry heathlands and dry sclerophyll forests from north-east New South Wales to Queensland. P. woombye is a small shrub that can reach a height of 2 m. The oblong-elliptic leaves are between 2-6cm long. The lower surface of the leaves has silvery scales on them and the leaves are aromatic when crushed. The upper leaf surface is smooth and has a defined channeled midrib. Each inflorescence has between 4-10 flowers and the flower stalks (pedicels) are between 4-15 mm long. The genus Phebalium is only found in Australia. Most of the species in the genus are obligate seeders and these are species that regenerate from seed following fire. Obligate seeders require time after fire to reach reproductive maturity in order to replenish seed banks. As such, frequent fires can negatively impact their ability to self-perpetuate. #environment #australiannativeplants #australiannativeflora #australia #queensland #botany #plantecology #fireecology #pyricsuccession #obligateseeder #dryheathland #drysclerophyllforest #rutaceae #energy #nikonz6 #plantphotography

EN -- Mediterranean edges on dry basic soils. This community happens after an anthropogenic disturbance (scrub clearance). This results is a regrowth of shrubs that are resistant to this treatment (Quercus coccifera, Cistus albidus & Salvia rosmarinus). The gaps without shrubs are home to many herbaceous plants. These take advantage of the open environment to grow up before these shrubs eventually close them in. See the plans list. FR -- Ourlets méditerranéens sur sol basique. I was up to some stuff in the sagebrush steppe. I often find scorpions in sagebrush underneath cow patties. I don't know if something ecological is going on there or it's just observer bias/anecdotal. Perhaps the disturbance or open space allows for easier scorpion finding, or maybe its that same open space they like. Or or or degraded habitat leaves much to be desired for hiding spots, and the feces is the only spots left. We were examining grazed and ungrazed land. And it seemed the exclosure plots had so fewer invasives like Draba verna or Alyssum desertorum. I'm not sure. Just what I noticed. Grazed lands had less native grasses and more invasives, but we should let the data speak for itself. What I think is Paruroctonus boreus, Artemisia tridentata, sagebrush cotton gall, Frtillaria pudica, Phlox hoodi, Viola beckwithii, Collinsia parviflora, Poa secunda, drone and some termites. #sagebrushsteppe #sagebrush #wildflowers #springflowers #scorpions #entomology #whatsthatbug #flowers #plantecology #ecology #desert #oregon

Chandonanthus squarrosus. One of the leafy liverworts that really characterised the submontane silver beech (Lophozonia menziesii) temperate rainforests where the forest nears the treeline, from what I could see. Even more striking than this individual species, though, for me, was the shear mass of liverwort in these forests! The place was absolutely rammed full of them; carpets on the floor, curtains from the branches & cushions on the trunks. These are species with similar requirements to those we find in Scotland’s hills & temperate rainforest relicts, most of which are in poor condition. With restored ecological function & a long enough timeframe, forests with this lusciousness, richness & staggeringly enchanting character could perhaps return to Scotland. But I feel this also highlights quite how much we limit ourselves here in Scotland if we base all of our understanding of our ecosystems on what we currently have left.

🌱Root of the Month for April 2024: Myrrh🌱 •Taxa: Burseraceae/Commiphora/myrrha & molmol •Folk Nomenclature: Gum Myrrh Tree, Balsom Odendron, Mirra, & Karan •Native Locality: Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Yemen, & Arabian peninsula •Phenotypic Traits: Deciduous spiny shrub tree. Leaves are oblong and oval-shaped with 3 petal leaflets per leaf. Flowers are oval-shaped, yellow-red in color. Resin are found in the wounds in bark of trees; fragrant & balsam-like gum •Parts Used: Resin; infused into an incense •Gender: Feminine •Planetary Ruler: Moon •Elemental Ruler: 💦 •Traditional Usage in Rootwork: Protection via repulsion. Exorcism. Healing. It's smoke is used to consecrate, bless, and purify/clear a place, person, or thing. It is an amplifier, thus it is used in conjunction with Frankincense and sometimes other resins (i.e.: copal, benzoin, dragon's blood). Whole resins are also used as an additive in healing work to perpetuate peace & is often paired with Sandalwood. •Traditional Medicinal Usage: Resin is an antibacterial & antioxidant that supports positive oral, liver, skin, & respiratory health. Resin is also used as a pain reliever. Its antibacterial properties make it useful in neutralizing germs and bacteria that cause bad breath in addition to reducing redness in gums, treating gum disease, and healing receding gums. There is also research to suggest Myrrh is effective for healing mouth ulcers. Once again, when blended with Sandalwood, it is especially effective at killing the microbes that infect skin wounds. It contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties, namely certain compounds that interact with the body’s opioid receptors to block pain and provide relief. It has been found to detoxify whatever substances that the liver cannot – in particular, ammonia – thus purifying the bloodstream. . . #hoodoo #hoodooheritage #hoodooculture #ATR #ATRs #hudu #TheHoodooCalendar #hoodoos #rootwork #roots #rootworkers #plantmedicine #traditionalmedicine #botany #plantecology #herbology #spiritualblackgirls #spiritualblackboys #myrrh

Aotearoa NZ ferns. A keen birder might not take too long to see all of Aotearoa NZ’s forest birds, however, the fern diversity is enough to keen a periodontist entertained for years, I reckon! Seems that even after it separated from Gondwana & became its own wee chunk of land, it continued to receive fern spores from other parts of the world, meaning about half of the c194 native ferns are also found elsewhere, and the other half are often somewhat reminiscent of species found elsewhere. The dark greyish-brown bark and curved leaves of the Hoop Pine (Araucaria cunninghamii). This species can be found in rainforests from New South Wales to Queensland. Its most favourable growing conditions occur in south-east Queensland. A. cunninghamii is a tall tree that can reach a height of 50 m. The leaves overlap each other in sequences and are sharply angled (keeled) along the midrib. Juvenile leaves tend to be needle-like. Each leaf is approximately 8 mm long. A. cunninghamii was named after botanist and explorer Allan Cunningham who made remarks on the many mature stands of Hoop Pines that penetrated the canopy throughout the Brisbane area in the early 1800's. Unfortunately, many of the Hoop Pine stands were cleared for timber use. The genus Araucaria is one of three genera that make up the Araucariaceae family. Took an impulse date up to a hot spring with Franklin while it was raining. It was absolutely beautiful. I don't often botanize outside the sagebrush steppe desert or urban environment so it was a treat. Lot of my ideas for the IDs are based on Boise Nature Front flora and iNaturalist. If you have a better idea, let me know. Delphinium nuttallianum, Aphyllon purpureum (a holoparasitic plant that I've never seen before. It was in a giant patch underneath a Purshia tridentata and Rosa woodsii. Recently saw two Botanists found it in obscured locations in the Santa Monica Mountains outside Los Angeles, quite the range expansion.), a neat dragon fly sort of larvae, big patch of Collinsia parviflora, and a really pretty Sedum inside of a Draba I wanted to work on keying out. So much of my research these days is behind a computer, which i love and can't wait to share and teach to undergraduates and community members, it's just always hard to jump back into keying things out and botanizing. Also to not compare myself to other scientists and technicians that are seeing cool things. Major fear of missing out. But we are all small tiny grains of sand just attempting to eek out an existence. We all have a part to play. Whether in the field or behind a computer or making art or sustaining a native plant garden. Humility should be the oxygen exhaled in the culture of plants. #plantecology #botany #flowers #idaho #iNaturalist #communityscience

Plant science is a fascinating field that delves into the life and processes of plants, vital for sustaining life on Earth. From their cellular structure to their interactions with the environment, plant scientists study a wide array of topics. One crucial area is understanding photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy, driving the planet's carbon cycle. Additionally, researchers explore plant genetics, aiming to enhance crop yields, improve resistance to pests and diseases, and develop more resilient varieties to combat climate change. Plant scientists also investigate how plants respond to environmental stresses, such as drought or pollution, seeking ways to mitigate these effects. Overall, plant science is essential for ensuring food security, maintaining biodiversity, and developing sustainable agriculture practices. I'll back off a bit on the minutiae of nomenclature and taxonomy, and focus more on the interesting little tid-bits that make botany so interesting (I had a bit of helpful suggestions). Flora of South Texas - April 20th Flora of the Chihuahuan Desert - May 18th Other regions will be covered later this year - Happy Botanizing! Thanks to @davidbellcreative for the amazing retro postcard (I may just print some out for the attendees) #texasflora #texasplants #nativeplantsoftexas #blacklandprairie #botanicalgarden #botanicgardens #floraoftexas #wildflowersoftexas #sanantonio #satx #botany @npsot #planttaxonomy #plantecology

Some of my favourite pics from a couple weeks ago at Matt Dell’s bryophyte workshop on Wurundjeri country 🌿 Bryophytes (mosses, liverworts & hornworts) are probably my favourite plants, so it was really great to learn more about their identification and ecology 💧 While rather understudied and often overlooked, bryophytes are highly diverse, especially in stable rainforest environments where they’ve adapted to thrive in almost every microclimate. This makes them excellent indicators for environmental change, just by looking at the presence/absence of certain species 🔍 About 40 different bryophyte species had been documented in the small plot of rainforest we visited. I managed to ID 23 of them (woo!) and have them pressed in a herbarium as my own little guide :D I’ve also saved them as a highlight if anyone wants to refer back to them 🌱 1. Fern gully 1 2. Hymenophyton flabellatum (Fan Liverwort) 3. Hypnodendron vitiense (Umbrella Moss) 4. Hypnodendron vitiense sporophyte 5. Marasmius sp. 6. Marasmius sp. close up 7. Armillaria sp. (Honey Fungus) 8. Fern gully 2 9. Nothofagus cunninghamii (Myrtle Beech) covered in Papillaria flavo-limbata (Pendant Moss) 10. Podomitrium phyllanthus (thallose liverwort)

EN-- Spring is here! And so are the geophytes. These are plants with a reserve organ, commonly known as a bulb. Other species overwinter as rhizomes (underground stems) or tubers (bulging stems filled with nutrient reserves). In the temperate European forests, these plants shape a carpet on the forest floor in early spring, flowering before the trees bud. Most of these species optimize their chance to produce fruits before being forgotten under the shadows of oaks and elms. Next, a sample of my observations...

A dense infestation of the invasive weed Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia). Although there is uncertainty around the origin and subsequent distribution of M. charantia, recent genomic studies suggest that it may have originated from Africa and was domesticated throughout Asia (Cui et al. 2020; Matsumara et al. 2020). It was then likely brought over to Australia for its medicinal properties. In Australia, it has become naturalised from north-east Queensland to south-east Queensland and also some parts of New South Wales. M. charantia grows rapidly leading to dense infestations (like the one in this picture). Without removal, it can alter the structure and composition of native vegetation communities by out competing native species for light and nutrients and preventing seedlings from germinating. M. charantia can be removed either by hand, or by making a cut along a stem and applying herbicide. Mimulus lewisii (pink monkeyflower) has a wide distribution in western North America -- from the coast east to the Rocky Mountains, and from California all the way to Alaska. On it's northern range edge it closely follows glacier retreat, melt water and wet seep areas provide it an ideal habitat. As it establishes new populations in the areas left by glacial recession, theory predicts that flowers may be smaller and more prone to self-pollination, and plants will become more clonal (i.e., creating new plants through stolons/runners). Self-pollination and clonality are both methods of "reproductive assurance". They ensure that plants can continue to reproduce and spread even in the absence of pollinators. . . . #plantecology #plantbiology #science #monkeyflower #ecology #evolution #scienceart #sciart #scicomm #evolutionaryecology #scientificdrawing

The opposite leaves of the erect semi-succulent herb Peperomia (Peperomia blanda var. floribunda). This species can be found growing on rocks or tree trunks in rainforests, notophyll vineforests and sclerophyll forests from New South Wales to Queensland. P. floribunda can grow to a height of 30 cm. The erect stems eventually grow parallel to the ground (decumbent) and a dense distribution of trichomes are present along the stems. Trichomes are small stem appendages that serve multiple important functions including protecting against herbivore attacks and synthesising metabolites. The leaves are petiolate (have a leaf stalk) and are 3 cm long. This species prefers full shade and thus would be suitable to plant in the latter stages of restoration. #environment #australiannativeplants #australiannativeflora #australia #queensland #botany #plantecology #rainforest #vineforest #sclerophyllforest #piperaceae #energy #nikonz6 #plantphotography

Sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata, me, and oh I guess tens of thousands of migratory snow geese, Anser caerulescens, if you're into that sort of thing. Though sagebrush isn't thought of as a wetland species, it often can be found near wetlands, especially the larger variety Artemisia tridentata tridentata. Their roots can go almost 2 meters down into the soil, and grow most vigorously in well drained soils with lots of access to water. This can expose them to more fungi related diseases and shorten their lifespan. Some of the longer lived sagebrush, around 200 years old, are in mountain flats with more seasonal access to water from snow melt. This source of summer and fall water is critical for sagebrush in most of its range. #sagebrush #sagebrushsteppe #snowgoose #idaho #migration #birding #plantecology
