Chinese Painting & Calligraphy by Yulan Zhou Opening Reception August 4th 7PM - 10PM MaMO Gallery (parked behind Petshop at 2725 N. 62nd St.) Yulan Zhou is a multidisciplinary artist from China who will be showing a collection of Chinese paintings at the MaMO art gallery during the New American Arts Festival on August 4th in Benson. Her work ranges from traditional Chinese paintings to reflections on Buddhist ideals and imagery. She is interested in exploring a new way of expression in traditional Chinese painting. Zhou is fascinated by Chinese calligraphy and painting and studies how ink reacts to rice paper. The images she creates surfaces through her use of brush, ink and water. Her work is a meditative process, and she invites the viewer to also meditate on her work and observe what associations surface. Her work comes to life through the audience’s varying interpretations and presents viewer’s with their own artistic content including personal life philosophy and cosmic meaning. Many pieces on display have traveled from Southern China, while others were created recently, during her first visit to the United States. Zhou has a background in fashion and interior design which have influenced her traditional approach to painting and staging her work.
