It is flush with various sedge and rush species — important plants for the removal of pollutants via bioaccumulation (metabolic uptake of chemicals) and phytostabilisation (reducing bioavailability of pollutants via below-ground root biomass). . Sedges and rushes at NP known to filter water in this way, include: Bolboschoenus caldwellii (Marsh Club-rush), Juncus kraussii subsp. australiensis (Sea Rush), Juncus pallidus (Pale Rush), and Phragmites australis (Common Reed). . . Newells Paddock Urban Nature Reserve comprises parkland for public amenity, in addition to a brackish/estuarine wetland which supports a myriad of flora and fauna species. . In terms of the Ecological Vegetation Class (EVC) system employed by DELWP, Newells Paddock comprises: Brackish Wetland Aggregate (EVC 656), Brackish Lake Aggregate (EVC 636), and also Swamp Scrub (EVC 53). . . The assemblage of flora is made up of species from these EVC’s in addition to a smattering of vegetation native to other nearby Victorian Volcanic Plain EVC’s, such as Coastal Saltmarsh (EVC 9) and Heavy-soils Plains Grassland (EVC 55_61). 🍃 . . Dominant plant species within this dynamic re-created ecosystem include: Bolboschoenus caldwellii (Marsh Club-rush), Eucalyptus camaldulensis subsp. camaldulensis (River Red Gum), Sueda australis (Austral Seablite), Leptospermum lanigerum (Woolly Tea-tree), and Disphyma crassifolium subsp. clavellatum (Rounded Noonflower). . .
