It's crucial to remember the following: -Babies are left alone for many hours at a time by their mothers, this is normal. -They can easily camouflage in place. -Because hares are prey species, if the babies feel threatened they will often freeze in place and shiver, this is normal. -Mom comes back at dusk/dawn to feed her babies, this is normal. -Hares are prey species, so can get very stressed in captivity, and can suffer from capture myopathy, which is fatal. One professional FAUnature ringtail possum box is up in a tree near my house. Sshh don’t tell the council 😬😂 Wasn’t sure if our little friend was still alive as we hadn’t seen or heard anything the last two weeks, but a neighbour has messaged me this morning saying she heard scratching in her roof again. Hopefully not a 🐀. If it’s our possum friend or a different one even, we will attempt the ethical and appropriate process of removal of this little one from the roof space into a habitat box with support of locals Penny (from Adelaide Koala Rescue) and her husband Paul. This won’t be done in the standard call out a pest control service for eviction with entry point sealing, method, You need a permit to remove a possum from a roof space but usually while dealing with protected native animals, this is still classified as a type of “pest control.” The possums are meant to be released within their territory (a 50 metre radius from where they were expelled from the roof), but some illegal/unprofessional operators release outside the possum’s territory and usually that results in their death. Even operators who release within the possum’s territory are not required to install a possum box in an appropriate location as a bare minimum. Best practise is to try and get the possum familiar with a nesting box and safely moved in before sealing entry points to a roof space. How can you help our ringtail and brushtail possums? 🌳 Don’t chop down existing trees & plant new trees - especially natives like eucalypts as they are habitat and the leaves are food. Also try to keep connectivity between trees so that possums travel along the branches as they should, not dangerous overhead wires. 🌾🌱 Grow native food for possums and be willing to share some of your garden produce. Cover and protect what you want to eat/keep and leave a bit for possums and native birds. 🌹Grow roses and be willing to let the possums eat the petals. They love roses. 🛖Get an appropriate habitat box. Ach, was soll's. Immerhin habe ich die Zugabe ja schon wohlweislich angedroht. Nach der Leidenschaft setzte beim Weibchen noch der Mutterinstinkt ein. Vom Baum wurde kurzerhand noch ein Stück Rinde entfernt und zum Auspolstern in den Horst gebracht. Den haben wir so auch gefunden. Er liegt viel höher als der vom letzten Jahr und der Baum ist außerdem noch viel dichter. Das freut mich ungemein, denn den Irrwitz aus 2023 wollte ich nun wirklich nicht wiederholt haben. Wochenlang haben wir immer ein ungutes Gefühl beim Gedanken daran gehabt, dass die Sperber immer wieder gestört werden konnten und vielleicht ihre Brut aufgeben. In diesem Jahr sind sie vor neugierigen Blicken sicher. Ich habe in diesem Jahr bei den Habichten so viele Paarungen fotografiert, dass man glauben konnte, das hier sei nichts besonders mehr. Aber weit gefehlt. Jede Sperbersichtung alleine für sich war bislang immer ein riesiger Adrenalinstoß. Die Sperberung ist noch deutlich keilförmiger, was ihn als nicht einmal einjährigen Sperber outet. Frau Sperber hat sich in diesem Jahr also einen ganz schön jungen Knaben zum Liebhaber auserkoren. Damit ist ebenso klar, dass es nicht das Männchen aus dem letzten Jahr ist. barnacle goose - Weißwangengans (Branta leucopsis) 🇦🇹 Mein Urlaub in Schweden hat schon mit tierischen Begegnungen begonnen als am Flughafen die ersten Kiebitze zu sehen waren. Fürs Besichtigen der Stadt habe ich mich fürs leichtere Equipment entschieden: Meine @canonaustria EOS R6 und das rf 24-70mm f2.8l, das ich mir von @digitalkameraverleih geliehen habe. Als ich dann an einem Fluss mitten in der Stadt einige Weißwangengänse beobachten konnte, war ich sehr froh, dieses Objektiv dabei gehabt zu haben und es mal für Tiere statt Architektur testen zu können. Ich bin echt beeindruckt von Präzision und Schärfe 😊 Ich finde es immer wieder schön Tiere in der Stadt zu fotografieren, weil man viel experimentieren kann, wenn sie entspannt und Menschen gewöhnt sind. Ich freue mich schon, es ab morgen Abend in der Wildnis zu verwenden. Aber auch auf die Motive, die ich mit meinem rf 100-500mm festhalten werde bin ich gespannt! 🇬🇧 My vacation in Sweden started with animal encounters when I saw the first lapwings at the airport. I opted for the lighter equipment for sightseeing in the city: my @canonaustria EOS R6 and the rf 24-70mm f2.8l, which I borrowed from @digitalkameraverleih. When I was able to observe some white-cheeked geese on a river in the middle of the city, I was very happy to have this lens with me and to be able to test it for animals instead of architecture. I'm really impressed by the precision and sharpness 😊 I always enjoy photographing animals in the city because you can experiment a lot when they are relaxed and used to people. I'm looking forward to using it in the wild from tomorrow evening.
