Processing the events of the past week. A lot of full circle moments for me. My last performance as a young artist with the Chicago Opera Theater. Also my first performance as a professional with Joachim Schamberger, our opera director at Northwestern! Meet Tyson Deaton! @tyson.deaton is the music director/pianist for #newopera "The Climate Opera Project" @nyutisch Theatre C in the Paulson Center on April 27 and 28. Known for his broad range of repertoire and versatility of style, Tyson Deaton has established a reputation for leading energetic and inventive performances. With his musical roots in the standard operatic canon, his affinity for contemporary works is acclaimed. Frequently entrusted with new work development as a musical authority, Deaton has led premieres of an impressive roster of contemporary composers. At the opposite end of the musical spectrum, he is currently completing a scholarly edition of the works of Joseph Bologne de Saint-Georges. Joining San Francisco Opera for Sweeney Todd, followed by L'elisir d'amore at Opera Birmingham, Deaton has also worked with Houston Grand Opera, NYCO, American Modern Ensemble, Opera Omaha, Atlanta Opera, Sarasota Opera, and Kentucky Opera, among many others. Hello world! I've been incredibly busy these last few months. I've been criss-crossing the coasts for the last month and a half and have finally settled down enough to start posting about it. First, here are some highlights from my trip to Austin in early March! @oneounceopera performed the opera I wrote with @playfulwright, Bubbie and the Demon (quite fabulously, I might add). It was a wonderful time, and I got to catch up with the Austin Ibsens for the first time in a while! 1) Me with my uncle Kent and uncle Ole 2) Me with my cousin @t3ddy_bears_b3ars 3) Cecelia and I with the cast of Bubbie 4) Possibly the best shrimp and grits I've ever had 5) I would have been remiss without some Texas Barbecue from The Salt Lick 6-9) My favorite art pieces from the Blanton Museum (including these mesmerizing bell installations!)

𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘞𝘪𝘳𝘦 has praised her “vocal power,” “enchanting voice,” “velvety mezzo-soprano,” and “abundant vocal and dramatic technique, with no shortage of soaring high notes and flexible roulades.” She returned to Carnegie Hall in 2023, this time to Stern Auditorium, as the mezzo-soprano soloist in 𝘙𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨. Madison won The American Prize in 2020 and has performed roles with opera companies such as Caramoor, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Teatro Nuovo, Sarasota Opera, Teatro Grattacielo, and the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice. Meet @weisera Broad gestures and rich textures are hallmarks of the “compelling” (The New York Times), “deliciously wistful” (San Francisco Classical Voice), music of composer Alex Weiser. Born and raised in New York City, Weiser creates acutely cosmopolitan music combining a deeply felt historical perspective with a vibrant forward-looking creativity hailed as “personal, expressive, and bold” (I Care If You Listen). Weiser’s debut album and all the days were purple, was named a 2020 Pulitzer Prize Finalist and cited as “a meditative and deeply spiritual work whose unexpected musical language is arresting and directly emotional.” Released by Cantaloupe Music in April 2019, the album includes songs in Yiddish and English. Active as an opera composer, Weiser is currently working on two operas. Tevye’s Daughters, written with librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, is a commission from American Lyric Theater. Based on Sholem Aleichem’s iconic Yiddish stories, it explores the tragic death of Tevye’s lesser-known daughter, Shprintse. The opera also traces the lasting impact of Shprintse’s fate on her sisters who are now elderly and living in New York. The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language with librettist Ben Kaplan is set in 1950s post-war New York and follows linguist Yudel Mark as he sets out to write the world’s first fully comprehensive Yiddish dictionary — an effort of linguistic preservation, and a memorial to the dead. "The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language" is part of Bang on a Can's Long Play Festival, in collaboration with American Opera Projects (AOP) and The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life. "The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language" is a 60 minute concert that tells the tragi-comic story of Yiddish linguist Yudel Mark’s unfinished effort to create the first comprehensive Yiddish dictionary. The Great Dictionary invites audiences to contemplate the surprisingly grand ambition of Yiddish culture after its decimation during the Holocaust and to consider the power of language to transform and shape us. I’ll admit, I get to work on some pretty cool projects. They are challenging and stressful and it’s always hard work doing stuff beyond your traditional operas in the standard rep. BUT it’s always amazing to look back on these challenging productions and think “I can’t believe I accomplished that.” Imposter syndrome is real in the moment, but in retrospect, I’ve already done the things I didn’t think I was ready for. As the Calling Stage Manager for this production of “El Ultimo Sueňo de Frida y Diego”, it is a HUGE undertaking and I am facing new challenges, but it’s exhilarating getting to troubleshoot the challenges this show brings. Stressful, but exhilarating. Now if I could get a standard repertoire show to call next with just a few light cues and only IN and OUT rail cue calls, that would be fantastic. #newopera #smlife #fridakhalo #diegorivera

Meet Ben! Born in Brooklyn, NY, librettist Ben Kaplan studied literature and theater at Williams College. He currently serves as Director of Education at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, where he directs programs that teach Jewish history and culture to a broad and diverse audience. Meet Jose Olivares! Our 6th and final Young Artist for the 2024 Summer Festival. Bass-Baritone Jose Olivares is a recent M.M graduate of the University of Oklahoma, he also holds an undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University - Commerce in Music Education. He has been a young artist at the Seagle Festival and Des Moines Metro Opera, and seen as a soloist with The Norman Symphony. A few notable roles include: Simone (Gianna Schicchi), Dulcamara (The Elixir of Love), Coline (La Boheme), Uberto (La serva padrona), Germano (La scala di seta), Olin Blitch (Susannah) and Farfarllo (The Love for Three Oranges). In his current tenure as a resident artist at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Mr. Olivares will be covering Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana and Frere Laurent in Romeo et Juliette, as well as perform the role of Duke in Romeo et Juliette. Exagoge by @composersandthevoice alums composer Avner Finberg and librettist @edwardeinhorn is an immersive opera/play/Passover seder, based on the oldest known Jewish play, written in Alexandria in the second century BCE by Ezekiel the Tragedien. The audience gathers round the seder table or watches from the risers, joining the performers for a traditional 15-part modern seder. An opera composer, Zeke, has brought home his girlfriend Aliyah, a non-practicing Muslim, for the first time. Meet William! William is the composer of "Polar" created with librettist @fredsauter, premiering at @bam_brooklyn as part of “The Climate Opera Project” this coming Tuesday April 23rd at 7:30pm. William King Barnett (b. 1996) is a New York City based (Los Angeles born) composer and writer. His degrees and training include M.F.A. Musical Theater Writing from NYU Tisch School of the Arts (2020) and B.M. Music Theory & Composition from The College of Wooster in Ohio (2018). His training also includes multiple composition programs, master classes, and studying under composer Carl Protho, ASMAC, ASCAP. His music and sound credits include the short film “To The Fireflies” (2021), “India Pilgrimage: A Journey of Awakening” (2019), “Cupid & Psyche: A Pop Opera,” (2018) and “H.P. Lovecraft’s Nightmare Suite” (2013). Since graduating from NYU Tisch, he has worked on multiple short films, “To The Fireflies” and “Till Morning” (2021) and has written two new musicals titled “The Rumor,” a high school rom-com and “Hell’s New CEO,” a political satire. He has also continued his study of music with composition lessons and multiple workshops and master classes. William is a member of the Association of Musicians, Arrangers & Composers (ASMAC).
