Edmonia: behind the scenes! 🎬 Thankful for the opportunity to premiere this work - in all honesty, this has been a challenge to navigate and many moments have definetly put us to the test, mentally and vocally. However, I am happy to put myself in new and uncomfortable situations despite the exhaustion it has caused and I hope that I take away many things from this premiere. #edmonia #edmonialewis #edmonialewisartist #opera #contemporaryopera #hybridopera #musicaltheatre #musicals #periodpiece #acting #singing #dancing #behindthescenes #interlochen #interlochenarts #interlochenartscamp #interlochenartsacademy #worldpremiere #billbanfield #patricerushen #sydneyjamesharcourt #ambercierramerritt

In Honor of Women’s History Month, IAC highlights these important American women sculptors: Edmonia Lewis, Claire Falkenstein, Louise Nevilson, Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, Louise Bourgeois, and Augusta Savage. The prolific output of American women sculptors attests to the artists' circumnavigation of social and cultural obstacles in order to accomplish important work. We celebrate these figures who worked--and continue to do so--from the mid-19th century through to the present. The paradox of their accomplishment in creating "cut and cast" sculptures in the face of multi-dimensional challenges attests to the vitality of women's creative spirit. #womenartists #womensculptors #womenshistorymonth2022 #womenempoweringwomen #iac #edmonia lewis #clairefalkenstein #augustasavage #harrietwhitneyfrishmuth #louisebourgeois #louisenevelson

EDMONIA LEWIS (1844-1907) Hailed as the first professional African American and Native American sculptor, Lewis had little training but overcame numerous obstacles to become a respected artist. Lewis attended Oberlin College in Ohio where she emerged as a talented artist. The abolitionist movement was active on the Oberlin campus and would greatly influence her later work. Lewis befriended abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison and sculptor Edward A. Brackett. It was Brackett who taught Lewis sculpture and helped propel her to set up her own studio. By the early 1860s, her clay and plaster medallions of Garrison, John Brown and other abolitionist leaders gave her a small measure of commercial success. In 1864, Lewis created a bust of Colonel Robert Shaw, a Civil War hero who had died leading the all-Black 54th Massachusetts Regiment. The money she earned from the sale of copies of the bust allowed her to move to Rome. One of her most famous works was a depiction of the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, titled "The Death of Cleopatra." Met with critical acclaim when she showed it at the Philadelphia Exposition in 1876 and in Chicago two years later. Until the 1890s, she continued to exhibit her work and was even visited by Frederick Douglass in Rome, but little is known about the last decade or so of her life. Lewis's life and art have received posthumous acclaim. Her pieces are now part of the permanent collections of the Howard University Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Happy first day of Black History Month! 🖤❤ Had to represent today at work. ✊🏾 Sojourner Truth - American abolitionist and women's rights activist.Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son in 1828, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. Garrett Morgan - Black Inventor, businessman, and community leader. His most notable inventions were a three-position traffic signal and a smoke hood notably used in a 1916 tunnel construction disaster rescue. Phyllis Wheatley-Peters - first African-American author of a published book of poetry. Born in West Africa, she was sold into slavery at the age of seven or eight and transported to North America, where she was bought by the Wheatley family of Boston. Frederick Douglass - African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, becoming famous for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings. Edmonia Lewis - "Wildfire", was an American sculptor, of mixed African-American and Native American heritage. Born free in Upstate New York, she worked for most of her career in Rome, Italy. She was the first African-American and Native American sculptor to achieve national and then international prominence. #bhm #blackhistory #Sojourner #Garrett #Phyllis or #Phillis #Frederick #Edmonia #notyouraverageschoolcounselor #SucceedwithDRIVE #loveMYkids

. 🎨✨Edmonia Lewis✨🎨
Edmonia Lewis was the first African-American and indigenous artist to achieve international acclaim. Her father was a free African-American and her mother was Ojibwe. She was born in either New York or Ohio in the early 1840s.  Fortunately her story has been resurfacing in recent years, but the decades of her disappearance from the pages of art history is a reflection of the racism and neglect that has always impacted talented women of color in America. Edmonia’s story is remarkable for the unmatched obstacles she faced. Lewis overcame all odds, studying and creating many marble sculptures in the neoclassical style. After leaving the racism in America behind that hindered her advancement as an artist, she lived in Rome and was inspired by the stories of other women of color such as Cleopatra, Hagar and Mary the Mother of Jesus. She converted to Catholicism and was quoted as saying, “I have a strong sympathy for all women who have struggled and suffered. For this reason, the Virgin Mary is very dear to me.” Edmonia worked for years to create a sculpture of Hagar that expressed her vision accurately, as she identified with her as someone who felt she didn’t quite belong anywhere, and had experienced painful rejection.  Edmonia’s statue of Hagar is the only piece of religious themed art that remains, however she is best known for her sculpture of Cleopatra’s suicide. Unlike other sculptures of the African Queen, Edmonia’s version is shown after her death, resonating deeply for those who identified with the pain of the black diaspora.  Unfortunately, most of Lewis’s sculptures have not survived. Her specialty was busts of abolitionists and subjects that reflected her dual African-American and Native American ancestry and images of freedom, empathy and women’s struggle. #blackartinamerica #blackartistsinhistory #blackartists #christianart #blackchristianart #hagar #edmonialewis #edmonia #blackhistorymonth #blackwomanshistory #knowyourmothers #catholicwoman #churchhistory #arthistory #americanarthistory  #indigenousart #indigenous #ojibwe #ojibweartist #indigenouswoman

"In leaving Oberlin, Lewis found success, supporters, and patrons among the abolitionist community around Boston and later furthered her career as a sculptor in Rome. One source quotes Lewis as saying of her studies and success in Rome, “I was practically driven to Rome in order to obtain the opportunities for art-culture, and to find a social atmosphere where I was not constantly reminded of my color. The land of liberty had no room for a colored sculptor.” Oberlin represents a paradox for understanding Lewis that parallels what we can learn from the history of the town and college, promoting egalitarianism and equality, while preserving and upholding ideas of ‘separate spheres’ for men and women and Victorian values. While Oberlin provided Edmonia Lewis with an education and introductions to the abolitionists who would become her patrons and customers, her time here was marked by the constraints and contrasts of the reality of Oberlin in the 1860’s and marred by the blatant acts of racism she encountered. In 2010 a major biography was published exploring the life of Lewis during and after her time in Oberlin. Child of the Fire: Mary Edmonia Lewis and the Problem of Art History’s Black and Indian Subject by Kristen PaI Buick can be purchased in the Oberlin Heritage Center bookstore, both online and in-person. https://secure.oberlinheritage.org/store.shtml?details=115 #edmonia #edmonialewis #africanamericanart #oberlin #oberlinheritagecenter

Despite her acquittal, Lewis did not remain in Oberlin for long. A year after the trial, she was accused of stealing art supplies, with again, a lack of evidence. Most sources agree that despite her support for Lewis during the trial, Marianne Parker Dascomb did not allow Lewis to enroll for her final semester. Other sources claim that she chose to leave Oberlin to pursue her career as a sculptor, with some claiming that it was Frederick Douglass himself who encouraged her to head east to Boston. It is around this time that she appears to drop Mary from the beginning of her name, primarily being known as Edmonia Lewis from then on. She went on to gain international fame for her work out of her studio in Rome, before falling into relative obscurity for decades. This image of Lewis is a more recent discovery, taken in 1874-1876 and is the only known photograph of Lewis that was taken in Rome. It is held in the collection of The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. https://art.thewalters.org/detail/82751/portrait-of-edmonia-lewis-1844-1907/ #edmonia #edmonialewis #oberlinheritagecenter #oberlin @thewaltersartmuseum

Edmonia Lewis was born between 1843-45, with many marking her birthday as July 4, 1844 and typically locating her family in upstate New York. Her father was a free Afro-Haitian and her mother was Ojibwe Indian. After the death of both her parents at a young age, Lewis was adopted by her mother’s relatives and grew up observing her family’s Objiwe culture, going by the name “Wildfire”. She described this period of her life later: “Until I was twelve years old I led this wandering life, fishing and swimming ... and making moccasins. I was then sent to school for three years but was declared to be wild,—they could do nothing with me.” Her older half brother, Samuel, was to be a major source of early support for Lewis, using his success as a California gold miner to provide for her education in Albany and later in Oberlin. She first attended the preparatory department of Oberlin College beginning in 1859, and it is at this time she went by the name Mary Edmonia Lewis. ***** Photograph of Edmonia Lewis, Albumen print, c.1870, Henry Rocher from the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. #oberlin #oberlinheritagecenter #edmonia #edmonialewis #maryedmonialewis

In honor of #Juneteenth, we're throwing it back to our last featured artist, Edmonia Lewis, and her iconic work of art, "Forever Free." Showcasing a newly-freed African-American couple, the work takes its name from the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863), which noted, in part, that “all persons held as slaves within any State… shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Pictured: Edmonia Lewis, Forever Free, 1867-68. @howard1867⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #art #sculpture #artcurious #arthistory #edmonialewis #edmonia #foreverfree #howarduniversity #blackarthistory

💪 #art #womanartist #lewis #edmonialewis #americanart #sculpture #cleopatra #artist #dailyart #instaart #artoftheday #artwork #marble #queen #neoclassicism #arthistory #student #whoruntheworld #africanamerican #19thcentury #deathofcleopatra #beauty #america #newyork #americanartist #washington #edmonia #blackisbeautiful #freedom #femmelibre

We've recently had the Edmonia Shawl from @knitspot re-imagined in Stone Soup Fingering, our subtly heathered 2-ply blend of rambouillet, columbia, lincoln, navajo-churro, alpaca, silk, bamboo, tencel, bison, and llama, with a slightly bumpy tweed look. The neps and noils add a little rustic character to the fabric, and create a supremely lofty, lightweight, and warm shawl. You can find the pattern through #interweaveknits Fall 2016 issue, or pick up a kit for the project through the link in our bio.
