Another 1936 bio-pic, this time scripted & directed by another of the directors I’m featuring this year, Watanabe Kunio. The film is The Life of Korekiyo Takahashi, and it was released by Nikkatsu in 2 parts, of 7 & 8 reels respectively, interestingly on the same day, 19 November 1936. Chronologically, this was the last film directed by Watanabe before he started his Tange Sazen trilogy. The first 3 pics are from the Cinema Year Book of Japan for 1937. Pic 1 shows Kobayashi Jushiro, Nakano Kaoru & Oka Joji (who played Takahashi), while pic 2 shows Oka with Hanayagi Kogiku. I don’t know for sure, but suspect that the 2-part film doesn’t survive. Pic 5 shows the real Takahashi, who was born on 19 September 1854. Pursuing a political career later in his life, he was Minister of Finance between 1931 & ‘36, and was also briefly an acting Prime Minister in May 1932. His expansionist fiscal policy became known as Takahashi Finance, with the proportion of military spending rising from 39% in 1933 to 60% in 1936. This led to the recovery of Japan’s industry after the slump of the early 1930s, but also to the uncontrolled expansion of the military forces. Interestingly, although Takahashi favoured Japanese expansion overseas, he was actually opposed to the extreme militarism of the army. This was presumably what led to his assassination in Akasaka on 26 February 1936 (he was 81). Reportedly preparations for the film began almost as soon as the assassination occurred. I haven’t found much information about the film, which isn’t reviewed in the Year Book, but these stills suggest that it covered much of Takahashi’s adult life. 4 April 2009, Tomica Hero Rescue Fire memulai episode perdananya 15 tahun yang lalu. Sesuai judulnya, karya ini adalah kelanjutan dari Tomica Hero Rescue Force yang tayang setahun sebelumnya. Rescue Fire sekaligus menjadi karya tokusatsu ketiga Takara Tomy di tahun 2000an yang dimulai oleh Madan Senki Ryukendo. Meski menjadi kelanjutan Rescue Force, Shochiku yang sudah memproduksi kedua karya sebelumnya kali ini diganti oleh Nikkatsu, tapi banyak staf dari karya sebelumnya yang tetap dibawa kesini. Ini adalah tokusatsu produksi Nikkatsu untuk pertama kalinya dalam 35 tahun sejak Dengeki! Strada 5 di tahun 1974. Meski menjadi kelanjutan secara pandangan dunia, tentunya karya ini memperkenalkan beberapa hal baru. Jika Rescue Force hanya bisa melakukan Chakusou (memasang) di markas sebelum ke lokasi, Rescue Fire menggunakan Rescue Megaphone yang multifungsi termasuk untuk memakai pakaian langsung di tempat layaknya adegan transformasi tokusatsu pada umumnya. Desain Fire Suit ketiga anggota awal Rescue Fire lebih mendekati pasukan pemadam kebakaran sungguhan, dengan setiap anggota memiliki warna masing-masing yang mendominasi pakaian seperti Super Sentai. Masih seperti seniornya, penyelamatan nyawa lebih diutamakan daripada pertempuran. Namun, jika Rescue Force sering digambarkan mengutamakan penyelamatan nyawa meskipun itu berarti mengabaikan pertarungan dengan musuh, Rescue Fire lebih berorientasi pada aksi. Polanya adalah setelah penyelamatan nyawa selesai, mereka berlanjut ke melawan monster musuh dari kelompok Jakaen. Having featured the first film in Watanabe Kunio’s Tange Sazen trilogy, I checked Japanese sites for images of the other 2 movies, but could only find this publicity flyer for the 2nd, Tange Sazen Love-Hate Demon Sword, a 69 minute talkie released on 1 April 1937. The final part, Tange Sazen Complete Roar, followed on 30th April, and was a 91 minute film. As before the Nikkatsu Movie database gives no plot for either film, so I’m assuming they don’t survive. Scripts were contributed by Yamagami Itaro, while Okochi Denjiro again played the dual roles of Sazen & Magistrate Ooka. Hara Setsuko didn’t appear in these later parts. A still from Hara Setsuko’s 11th film, and the last released before The New Earth. This is from The Prosecutor and his Sister, a 70 minute movie released by Nikkatsu on 14th January 1937. Proving his versatility, this modern setting talkie was again directed by Watanabe Kunio. The script was by Aramaki Yoshio from an original story by Takeda Toshihiko. She is shown with Oka Joji as her titular sibling, Yajima Kensaku (Hara played Yajima Akiko). The siblings lost their parents while young, and have lived together since. Kensaku has trained to become a prosecutor, while Akiko is to marry Shibano Hideo (Kobayashi Shigeshiro). Thus all seems to be going well until an unspecified incident forces Kensaku to arrest Hideo. These are the only plot points I’ve identified, although the story was re-filmed in 1956, and was also turned into a tv drama in 1961. The Nikkatsu Movie database makes no mention of any plot details, which again makes me believe that it doesn’t survive. Its theme song, Tree-lined Road of Life, sung by Dick Mine to lyrics by Sato Sonosuke & music by Koga Masao, became a popular hit. Stills from Daughters before Marriage, Hara Setsuko’s 8th film, and the first made after Kochiyama Soshun (1936, dir. Yamanaka Sadao), which I’m assuming is her first fully surviving movie. Daughters before Marriage was a 58 minute talkie released by Nikkatsu on 28 May 1936. The director was Yoshimura Ren, from a script by Suzuki Noriko. Unfortunately I’m assuming that this doesn’t survive as the Nikkatsu website doesn’t include any plot details for it. In the era of developing relations between Japan and Germany, it was apparently based on the German language novel Virgin in Uniform by Leontine Zagan, so synopses of the novel may give clues to the film’s content. As far as I can tell this isn’t the same source material as for the German film Madchen in Uniform (1931). Interestingly though this does seem to have been set solely in a girl’s school, to the extent that there were no male roles at all. Hara played Sugiura, and was billed third behind Takihana Hisako (as teacher Nishiyama) & Sawamura Sadako (as the Superintendent). #setsukohara #renyoshimura #nikkatsu #hisakotakihana #sadakosawamura #bfijapan

Tonight - 1967’s Branded to Kill, Suzuki Seijun’s last film at Nikkatsu before they fired him. After this he sued Nikkatsu - a then-unheard of measure - and was effectively blacklisted from the mainstream Japanese film industry for a decade, only really regaining his footing in 1980 when the same artistic flourishes and touches that made Nikkatsu unhappy with him proved to be his triumph. With Joe Shishido up front you know this could be a cut above (and it is), even if the co-leads aren’t so well known - his charisma will carry it. Add to that cinematographer Nagatsuka Kazue, now a regular partner, and editors Suzuki Akira, who’d work with Suzuki Seijin again, and Imamura regular Tanji Mutsuo, and you can see that he’s just starting to assemble the kind of regular working relationships that end up making for a director’s purple patch of films - which he did in spite of having the rug pulled out after this film. As a taster for the research I’m carrying out on Hara Setsuko’s early career, here’s stills from her very first film, Hesitate, Young Man. Released by Nikkatsu on 15 August 1935, it was an adaptation of a novel by Takada Tamotsu, which was serialised in the Reijo Kai magazine. The script was adapted by Yamazaki Kenta, and the director was Taguchi Satoshi. Setsuko is shown in both shots with Takiguchi Shintaro, while pic 1 also shows Murata Chieko & Izawa Ichiro. The film was silent, but with a recorded music track. Sadly it’s lost. At the time of shooting Setsuko was 15 years & 2 months old. She was first given her stage name in this film. She plays a character called Obushi-chan, but really Setsuko. The Hara was an invention added to complete the name. Her co-star Takiguchi was a popular child star, now gravitating towards more mature roles. I’ve been able to find a partial plot summary, although sadly one lacking a resolution. Obushi-chan & her mother (Sagara Aiko) run a stationery store in a provincial town. Obviously the store is popular with students, as is Obushi-chan, especially with Hayasaki (Takiguchi) & his junior high school pals (including Yamanaka, played by Izawa). Sadly the mother is in debt to moneylender Okamoto (Nakamura Yoshiji), who tries to force her to marry Obushi-chan to his son (Takeishi Kyoichi) if she can’t repay the debt. When Hayasaki & his pals find out, they visit the moneylender themselves. Sadly I haven’t been able to find out more (yet, at least). Murata, by the way, played a character called Tagawa Teruko. In my last post I began quoting the review of Itami Mansaku’s 1936 film Akanishi Kakita by Uchida Kisao, which appeared in the Cinema Year Book of Japan for 1937, accompanied by this still of Hara Kensaku & Kataoka Chiezo. The rest of the review reads: “The story has been suggested by an o-ie sodo (literally, family strife, and characterized by intrigues and usurpations of Daimyo under the feudal regime), called the Date sodo, Date being the name of the particular Daimyo involved. The hero is the strange and eccentric Akinishi Kakita who participated in this o-ie sodo as a spy of the faithful retainer; and the episode itself is used as a background. Akinishi wore a shaggy beard; he had moles on his face; he had an extremely unprepossessing countenance; he was a perpetual dyspeptic and used medicinal herbs; and he played shogi, or Japanese chess, as a habitual pastime. The film play shows this queer individual, who moved and had his being in a world of his own, and was generally regarded by the people as a fool, finally discovering the intrigue of the conspirators; and with his seizure of the documentary proof, the plot thickens. He committed an ignominious sort of indiscretion as a pretext for escaping from the mansion of the conspirators’ confederate. Urged by his associates, he sent a love letter to Sazanami, a lady-attendant employed at this mansion and the most beautiful woman there. To his amazement, he learned that Sazanami had, as a matter of fact, been secretly in love with him. Thereupon the clumsy and awkward Akanishi fell into a great predicament. But in the end the film play shows how Harada Kai, the leader of the conspirators, finally met his doom; and the story comes to a close with the fulfilment of the strange love between Akanishi and Sazanami. This motion picture is Chiezo Kataoka’s production, and he performs the dual role of Akanishi Kakita and Harada Kai. Mineko Mori is cast as the leading woman, while Shosaku Sugiyama plays the part of the faithful retainer Matsumae Tetsunosuke.” Has anyone seen this film? To end my series of Valentine’s Day inspired-posts, 3 stills from The Cinema Year Book of Japan for 1937. These are from Nikkatsu’s 8-reel sound film The Romantic Song of Fukagawa, which was directed by Kiyose Eijiro, and released on 14 August 1936. Kiyose prepared his own script from a Naoki-prize winning novel by Kawaguchi Matsutaro. The film starred stage actress Nakayama Emiko, who appears in pic 1 with Kobayashi Jushiro, and in pic 3 with Yamamoto Reizaburo. I haven’t found a specific synopsis of the film adaptation, but I’ve got a translated summary of the plot of a stage play based on the novel. Hopefully the 2 were roughly similar. The Fukagawa kaiseki restaurant has operated since the Edo period. The current owner Isaburo (Yamamoto) enters the household of his concubine’s master (I hope I’ve understood this correctly) & leaves the restaurant to his beautiful daughter Osetsu (Nakayama), who is in love with the business’s employee Chozo (Kobayashi). The 2 hope to marry & run the restaurant together. However, Isaburo’s benefactor needs a loan and, to help him out, Isaburo resolves to sell the business. His uncle Iseharu (Kamidai Yukichi) recommends that Osetsu should be married to a wealthy man as an alternative to the sale. Knowing her feelings for Chozo, Isaburo hesitates, but Chozo’s mother Otsune removes him from the shop to make Isaburo’s decision easier. In despair Osetsu decides to marry for the sake of the restaurant, but on the day of the wedding Chozo appears to declare his love. Isaburo decides to sell the business & open a new, smaller restaurant with Osetsu & Chozo, so ultimately happiness prevails. Although this film didn’t make its way onto Kinema Junpo’s annual top 10 list, Nikkatsu’s website suggests it won top prize for a contemporary drama at the Tohnichi awards. I admit that’s a new award to me.
