“My nonprofit doesn’t have any type of strategy or programs. It's the first day of May and my focus this month is MINDFULNESS. When I look at my calendar for May, I feel a bit overwhelmed. I have so much going on personally and professionally. With that being said, my goal is to show up to each event mentally present and grateful for each experience. When I look back over my life, I realize that I have rushed through so many meaningful moments by either being the distracted hostess or the anxious speaker or the pre-occupied boss. But, in this season of my life, I want to enjoy the moment, experience the emotions, and really celebrate the successes. I want to spend as much time as possible with the people that I love. I also want to do meaningful and impactful work that I love while stretching myself with new adventures that I am learning to love. Life's losses have taught me not to take time or people for granted. So, as I begin this new month, I want to approach it in a way that is new for me. Unlike any other typical Monday, this day marked the first time I cracked open my laptop not as an employee, not as a side-hustler, but as the full-time CEO of SMP Nonprofit Consulting. To be honest, I wasn’t that excited. I was scared out of my mind. I was still shaken from my old job, and on top of that, I had only one contract that was set to wrap up less than 60 days later. The voice of the enemy told me I would fail every day. But here I am one year, ten clients, $200k in grants awarded, and a small team later. I’m still learning, still growing, and still believing God for things that I can’t put into words right now. But if I had to sum it all up, I’d say: God’s favor is a trip sometimes. Repeat after me: 🗣 IT’S UNETHICAL TO PAY A GRANT WRITER ON COMMISSION! 🗣 Yep, I said it. Contrary to popular belief, contingency pay is frowned upon and strictly prohibited among industry professionals and associations like the Association for Fundraising Professionals and Grant Professionals Association. Simply put, contingency pay is paying your Grant Writer ONLY if the grant they prepared for you is awarded. Here’s a couple of reasons why paying on commission is a BIG NO-NO: ❌ Grant writers have no DIRECT control over whether you win a grant or not. A well-written proposal is only ONE piece of the puzzle! The success or declination of a proposal can depend on many things like available funds, funder interests, lack of organizational readiness, etc. ❌ Most funders are “iffy” about funding fundraising expenses. This is usually a cost covered by your individual donor or board giving revenues. ❌ Funders can revoke your grant award if you spend it on things like this that aren’t approved in your grant agreement without their consent. ❌ Let’s say you’re applying for a $500,000 grant and offer to pay the grant writer 5% if awarded. That’s a $25,000 bill! ❌ GAAP standards state that fundraising services must be paid for at the time the services are provided. Just because we serve nonprofits does not mean we work for free. 🥴 Developing a competitive grant proposal takes time and time IS money. An ethical, quality grant writer will deliver a compelling proposal in exchange for a fair fee (project- or hourly-based), and will likely ask for a down payment up front.
