I have always been aware of the importance of detachment given my mindfulness practice but I especially appreciate this way of looking at it. Whether it is an idea of a relationship you think you have, a specific career you feel owes you more, or a bank account that either has money in it or not - when we apply detachment it allows us to have an element of 'freedom'/empowerment. Don't let the smile fool you. This was the last corporate picture that was taken of me before I burnt out and left my investment banking career. Hiding behind the smile was someone who was deeply unhappy, feeling very disconnected from herself, completely out of alignment with her authenticity and what she really wanted. And physically completely exhausted and depleted in every possible way. I felt broken. Completely broken. I had everything anyone could possibly want and need and I'd never felt more unhappy. I didn't know it back then but that's what burnout does to you. Anxiety, heart palpitations, depression, complete nervous system dysfunction, insomnia, overeating or underrating, demotivation, isolation, inability to think clearly and make basic decisions. Yep, all the warning signs and all the symptoms were there. Putting my health first was not easy in an industry like the one I was in. It lead to some pretty uncomfortable conversations, and eventually to the decision to step out of a very successful 15 year + career. Easy decisions? No. Necessary ones? Absolutely. My very wise mum once told me something that always stuck with me, "no one will ever care about your health as much as you do. Money, people, things, come and go but if your health goes it may be lost for good (or at least for some time)". A rough translation from Finnish but you get the gist... 😅 So a little reminder to start putting yourself and your health first. It's not selfish, it's necessary. No one can pour from an empty cup. 🤍
No matter how big a challenge is, or how long the journey may be, consistent patience and perseverance are the tools that will guarantee success. Perseverance for the days that you’re “not feeling it”, and patience with the process, and with yourself on the days you feel no progress. Few things of value come easily, so dig to the root cause of the situation, then apply these two tools until the end goal is achieved. Whether it’s a few months, or years, you will get there if you continue with this method. Have you been feeling stuck and not really sure why? Like literally every single experience. If you’re not really aware of what’s going on under the surface you may not realize how much you are being controlled by your own reality. Often times blaming others and your own environment when really it’s actually you. That’s where the term self sabotage comes in. Today, I worked with a client who felt “not capable” due to a series of past events. Despite moving on and maintaining optimism, working on herself her emotions, these events subtly and unknowingly influenced her to stay small, over react to situations, sabotage herself etc. Using a technique called Mapping Across, we shifted her belief from “I am not capable” to “I am capable” in under 10 minutes—without rehashing the event or stirring up emotions. It’s fascinating how quickly and effectively subconscious reprogramming can alter our thoughts and beliefs, which then allow you to see the world differently, create better emotions, send out higher vibrations and get different results. While therapy, meditation, setting boundaries, and breathing techniques are useful for coping, nothing beats subconscious belief and identity changed. When someone comes to me with mental health concerns before anything we first want to take a look at daily habits and behaviors and diet that may be causing fatigue, lack of energy or motivation, sadness and so on. We all have habits and food that we love to partake in, however, do those things love us back or get in our way of our mental and emotional health? Things like alcohol and sugar....things like doom scrolling....they may feel good in the short term, but often time they give us the opposite of what we want long term. If we want happiness, clarity, vitality, more energy- we need to first assess and get real about our daily habits. 😄

I recently experienced an upgrade in my beliefs. I was having a lot of anxiety and sadness wanting someone to like me. I was believing that was the thing I needed to fix. Their liking of me. My belief was making me miserable. Here’s my upgraded belief: I like me. It’s my job to live my days liking who I am being. Might sound simple. But it changed how I felt and how I moved in the world almost immediately. I switched from a disempowered belief that left me frustrated to a belief that had me tapped into my agency. In rich, adaptive leadership environments you learn how to make changes to your beliefs so that you enjoy and feel energized in your work and in your life. I don’t do shallow quick fixes. Witnessing certain violent police responses to peaceful protests on college campuses has been weighing heavily on me. Peaceful protests are the bedrock of our democracy, and protected under the first amendment at public universities and CA campuses. I say peaceful, because anything inciting violence or making threats is not protected, and I am not defending those actions. “From the Civil Rights movement to the anti-Vietnam War protests, students have historically been on the frontlines of major civil rights demonstrations. As students protest across the country, [the ACLU js] calling on universities to remain firm in their commitment to protecting student activism, free expression, and peaceful dissent on campus.” @aclu_nationwide The ACLU’s stance is that “Where racist, misogynist, homophobic, and transphobic speech is concerned… more speech — not less — is the answer most consistent with our constitutional values.… “[But] the First Amendment does not protect behavior on campus that crosses the line into targeted harassment or threats, or that creates a pervasively hostile environment for vulnerable students.” This is where there is a tremendous amount of differences of opinion in the recent developments across campuses. You can go down a disturbing rabbit hole witnessing videos capturing horrific examples of hate speech, countered with many beautiful, peaceful moments. What is reality?! Maybe it’s peace and violence. It’s hard to grapple with. Students peacefully protesting as a first amendment right at public universities must be protected, even if we don’t agree with the messages- it’s crucial to the health of our democracy that free speech reigns. I am grateful that protesting was a part of my family’s values. My parents, who came of age in the 60s, had us marching in the streets and embracing protest as pathway to change early on. The Women’s Rights March on 4/9/89 brought us to D.C. for the first time (coinciding with my 12th birthday). I’ll never forget the energy of crowds like a moving sea, all fighting for the same goals of justice for all. First comment 👇🏼
