TRICK OR TREAT AND HALF TERM… What an end to half term (I realise there is still technically one day to go)! The last 2 days have been spent in London, exploring with friends to celebrate their oldest child’s birthday. We had to trick her about what show we were going to see but also try and keep it a secret all day. When I accidentally started singing songs from Mary Poppins, I thought I’d given it away. The last 2 days have been a real treat, going to parts of London I hadn’t been to before and there are more areas I would like to go back and see again. 💭 H A L F T E R M 💭 . . . How ridiculous is it that when I first started teaching I thought I was in some way abnormal or less of a good teacher because when it got to the end of a half term, I felt dread!? I love being in the classroom. I love teaching my children. BUT I will tell you what else I love...I love the freedom to be myself in my PJs at home, free time to spend with the people I love and feeling relaxed and energised when I wake up in the morning. . . As much as I love teaching, it's a demanding job that requires a lot from us. So, for anyone who felt like me in the early days...give yourself a break. You are allowed to dread going back. You are allowed any and all the feelings before returning to the classroom. You are still a good teacher and you will still show up for your children. 🤷 ALL feelings are welcome here. . . #octoberteacherphotochallenge

IDEAS Today was an ideas day, I mean I haven’t yet done any work this holiday, but ideas are flowing. This half term our topic is ‘is anybody out there’. This month @wellscathedral presented the museum of the moon exhibition, which was quite simply spectacular. There were pieces of work from schools within the local diocese. 🐻❄️ O U T S I D E : H A B I T A T S 🐻❄️ . . . Next half term we are starting our topic of Globe Trotters. As part of science I'm going to be looking at animal habitats around the world with my children. The first lesson is literally just exploring some different habitats around the world and considering animals that might live in those habitats. So today, I planned my first lesson in the unit and made this cut and stick sorting activity. To be honest, I could have differentiated more, but my thoughts on this are I'd like the children to work in pairs or small groups and DISCUSS and talk about where these animals might live and why they think that. Hopefully, the children will start to make connections between animals and their habitats and thus begin to understand adaptation for the lessons to come! I did however make a small challenge task for the groups that finished that requires them to use their existing knowledge of the world. They need to draw or write animals that might live in a pond habitat. As part of the plenary I plan to ask the children if they think it matters whereabouts in the world animals live and why they think that (drawing in some geographical discussion about climate...which we will be learning about in geography 🌡️🌍) . . 💜 S E L F L O V E 💜 . . . I've not been sure how to heal recently, people ask me what they can do, how they can help and honestly I have no response to give because I know I need to be able to heal in my own time and in my own way. That's not to say I don't now accept I need help, I just need time to process all the feelings. I feel a lot of feelings all of the time which is a gift I know, but also can be absolute torture. This half term has just pushed me to my brink. I almost fell off. So, I know it's time to reflect and rebuild myself. This is getting very deep and I digress 🙃 . . Today, I decided to take myself to Costa. Alone. I'm literally sat here drinking a hot chocolate, eating salted caramel brownie and listening to Lorde. There's something so peaceful about listening to music in a coffee shop alone, watching the world go by. It's nice to feel like me even for a moment 💗 . . ✨PROUD✨ So proud of the poems my class created this week based on Black History. We used Micheal Rosen’s strategy on teaching Poetry. The children really put themselves in the shoes of Black people and thought about how they felt when segregation was a part of society. I hope they remember these feelings and keep them close to heart so they grow up to be caring, non-judgmental and tolerant human beings. There’s a Indian saying, “In unity there is strength”. 🥞 F I R S T D A Y 🥞 . . . ...of half term calls for celebratory pancakes with maple syrup for breakfast 🤷🥞 E isn't here, he's working..on a Saturday 😥 So this morning I had a lie in, got up to the sound of drilling from building works two houses down and then I made myself some pancakes 👸 Something so trivial, but I'm proud I made the effort to a) cook because it's something I enjoy b) had the motivation to do something for myself. I even emptied and loaded the dishwasher 🙃 which seems ridiculous, but there's so many things I just couldn't face doing for weeks which then became a cycle of wanting to, but feeling overwhelmed...then not doing it...then staring at mess and feeling worse and so on! Anyone understand? Anyway, that's one thing I've achieved today and feel good about. As part of our learning around Black History Month we completed reading lessons, with a VIPERS structure, on the Civil Rights Movement 📚 We studied these biographies of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks before responding to ‘Caged Bird’ by Maya Angelou 📖 Q. What does the word ‘seldom’ mean? A. I’m not sure, but I’ve worked out that it must mean ‘barely’, because the poem is about a bird being trapped, and in this sentence it talks about the bird ‘seldom being able to see’. MEMORIES AND MY FIRST… Today it is my gorgeous godson’s 9th birthday. My first and only godchild. I remember like yesterday getting the text to say he had been born - it was my first day of my 3rd year teaching placement and when I checked my phone at lunchtime the message was there. 👾 A C T I V I T Y 👾 . . . ...based on practising reading real and pseudo words to be exact! It's been three years since I taught Year 1, but due to the statutory check being moved to the autumn term in Year 2 because of a global pandemic...here I am! I still use these types of activities to reinforce and revise the sounds taught prior to Year 2. . . This particular activity is one the children always enjoy! They can get carried away with elaborate alien drawings 🤣 so I'd put a timer on for that part! Ensure you explain to the children they mustn't share their aliens name with anyone else before the activity begins so it's a fun surprise for the person reading their aliens name! . . ◇ T O P I C ◇ We had the most amazing Science day today! The children had so much fun and were so absorbed in the learning. We had set up 3 stations to conslidate and wrap up our Science Topic : Animals Including Humans. Station 1 : We had the amazing @jungle_jonathan come in and share his amazing animals with us. (I was even brave enough to hold Rafiki the 22 year old Python 🐍) The children were amazing and loved every second! Station 2 : We had the 5 senses and different activities for the children to explore using their 5 senses; see, smell, hear, taste and touch - the tasting Station was definitely the favourite! Station 3 : We had set up a 'poo investigation' where the children had to pull apart the poo to investigate whether the poo was from a herbivore, carnivore or an omnivore. Again, the children were so engaged, they absolutely loved it! I love days like today! +×÷- M A T H S -÷×+ These resources are being used daily at the moment in my classroom to help support the children's learning and understanding of addition and subtraction. The children are so much more confident when there are concrete materials for them to use to support their learning. We are mastering addition and subtraction using the column method... it's a slow BUT steady process. It's so interesting to watch the children solve problems. SELF CARE This weekend I have very much focused on self care, alongside being in the great outdoors. Making sure I’ve had a work life balance this weekend has been a priority. ACTIVITIES&PROUD Today for the first time in weeks I was awake and ready for park run. Not only that, but I managed to take about 3.30 off my 5k split time from the 10k. I am beyond proud of the time 32.51. Just 6 weeks ago I had COVID and now I’m doing 5k in less than 33 minutes. 💗 A D V I C E 💗 . . . This half term my class have been thinking about friendship in PSHE. Today was a big one! We talked about how making new friends isn't always easy for everyone. The children knew this already and said making friends can make you nervous at first. It was adorable, anyway I digress. . . I used this gorgeous story by Tom Percival, to highlight how some people find it harder to make friends than others and that is okay. We talked about what we have to do when we meet someone new or want to make friends. I then asked the children what advice they'd give a reception child and their responses were so lovely! They said things like, you introduce yourself then ask them their name or you ask them what they like. . . The children then made these 'How to make friends...' posters that included a few instructions or top tips shall we say for the reception children. LEAVES 🍁 WELL-BEING Today is world mental health day, until this year I have tended to brush mental health to one side. This year that has all changed, I haven’t openly spoken about it, but those closest to me know the struggles I have had since just before the summer. In the summer term, I had a panic attack in front of my class, triggered by the stress of the academic year we had had among other things. If it wasn’t for the staff at school, I could have been undiagnosed for longer - but I am so thankful to them that they saw me and showed me what I needed to do. This weekend has seen me do very little work until this afternoon but it is done.
