Friends always ask me how I read multiple books at once, so here is how it goes: 1. I go through all my book stacks and pick out books that sound or look appealing to me at the moment. 2. I read a few pages from my selected stack to see what grabs me and I start reading. 3. At different times of the day or on different days I won’t feel like a certain genre so I will swap it up. I normally like something magical, something historical, something thoughtful, something light, and something thrilling. 4. Select 4/5 that I read in rotation. Repeat process and read more books. It’s as simple as that! This my current stack of possibilities, three of which were read in the last week and were replaced by three others. My appetite for reading has slowed down a bit as of late so I select more books to see if variation will provide the cure. I also choose a range of genres. How do you choose your next book? I tend to buy a pretty decent mix of new and used books - for contemporary romances / fantasy books, I end up buying a fair number of them new (lately I seem to be going on weekly trips to the bookstore to get the latest releases). For historical romances, on the other hand, there is no better place to shop than used bookstores / thrift stores. There's nothing more exciting than finally finding a book that is out of print / you've been searching for at a used bookstore. It's so rewarding, for lack of a better term. Prompted by @rogue.pages to ponder the point of returning to our books for a re-read. I’m yet to read the Border Trilogy and will be starting this year. I have managed to read The Road, Blood Meridian, and Child of God (not pictured). Last year’s reread of The Road was exactly what @rogue.pages is describing when noting the immersion we need to commit to through reading. I felt a pull to do the same for a reread, even moreso than a first time read. Partly because I had committed to finding something more from the reread process. Not in an expectant way. Just to feel I had done everything I could with the books I was rereading. And I’ve carried that reverence into my reading for this year. Slowly stripping my shelves of the dust-ridden and dreaded “TBR” books. The eternal TBR. I think Instagram has done wonders for my reading with purpose. While others are posting about trying to keep up with all of the new books purchased that have to be read, I’ve really loved feeling an outlet for my reading. Every time I’m reading a book I’m feeling connected to my friends on here. What will they think when I post about it. I want to have a meaningful experience with each book for myself and for bookstagram. Back to the immersion idea - do you go back to all the books you read? Are you like most people who have a short list of favourites that get reread when you’re searching for things to reconnect you with yourself (or is that just me? 🫣)? Or are you a read it and chuck it sort of person? I think there’s space for us all. Wow this was a ramble. Maybe I’ll call it stream of consciousness. I am due for Virginia Woolf soon. 📚 Secondhand Score round two! 📚 Today was gloriously sunny and I decided it was time to hit up the last used bookstore shop on my list. I accidentally forgot my transport pass so ended up walking 4km between shops. I had a bit of an adventure along the way! I saw Mr Potato Head through the window and I had to go in to check out the display. Ended up finding a Tokyo Disneyland China Chip cup that came home with me instead 😂 I missed out on Nonna’s subs too. I did get to the bookstore in the end, up a set of stairs and divided into rooms full of books! I walked out with these two sets and intentions to go back again.
