Road Trip - Post 1 We began our trip a week ago, flying into Charleston and staying a night. Travelers tip…get food at the airport before trying to find a bite to eat on the outside unless you want a meal at Circle K or bar food (thank you The Royal American for keeping your kitchen open past 10pm). We had a great breakfast in Charleston - Another Broken Egg Cafe - yummm on the grits there (and the apple fritter French toast, and the beignets, and the honey marmalade, and…more on the food to come). Marc found a lampshade shop and talked business there for old times sake. We started south to Savannah - finding church ruins from the revolutionary war and civil war along the way. Known also as the Sheldon Church or Old Sheldon Church, the building was originally known as Prince William's Parish Church. The church was built as a chapel of ease in the English Georgian style, using the Roman Tuscan or Doric order, between 1745 and 1753. The traditional understanding is that Prince William's was burned by the British in 1779 during the Revolutionary War, rebuilt in 1826, and then burned again in 1865 during the Civil War: The official South Carolina report on the "Destruction of Churches and Church Property," after the War Between the States, described Sheldon's second burning: "All that was combustible was consumed ..., its massive walls survive the last as they did the former conflagration," Bishop Thomas wrote, "Exactly as it happened a hundred years before in 1779, when General Prevost, marching from Savannahinto South Carolina burned the Church, so now in February 1865, General Sherman marching from Georgia into South Carolina, burned it a second time." However, an alternative view has more recently come to light. In a letter dated February 3, 1866, Miton Leverett wrote that "Sheldon Church not burn't. Just torn up in the inside, but can be repaired." Old Sheldon Church was originally known as Prince William's Parish Church and was built in the Greek Revival style between 1745 and 1753. It was burned down by the British in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. In 1826, it was rebuilt only to be burned again by General Sherman in February 1865. Today, these gorgeous ruins from a bygone era are found amongst majestic oaks and scattered ancient graves. Inside the ruins of the church is the burial site of Colonel William Bull, who, along with General Oglethorpe, was key in establishing the physical layout of Savannah, Georgia. #oldsheldonchurch #beaufortsc #oldsheldonchurchruins #beaufort #southcarolina
