Going to visit the historic location of Old Sheldon Church Ruins in South Carolina was such an amazing experience. All the combat and sadness, yet the joy of what the church meant to the local people gave me chills while standing in front of this church. The grave sites there are another layer of emotion in itself. Have you been here before, and if so...what did you think of the church? This was my favorite thing to see while we were in the Yemassee, SC area. The last picture is what the church originally looked like. Pretty amazing if you ask me. History of Old Sheldon Church Ruins: Old Sheldon Church was originally known as Prince William's Parish Church. The church was built sometime between 1745 - 1755, holding its first services in 1757. The church was burned by General Augustine Prevost’s British troops in May 1779 during the Revolutionary War. The church was rebuilt from the remaining walls in 1826, only to be burned again during the Civil War by General William T Sherman and the Federal Army in February 1865. The building was entered onto the National Register of Historic Places on October 22, 1970. I highly recommend visiting this location if you're ever in the area. Last nights capture at the old church ruins also known as the prince Williams parish church. This church was burnt down in the revolutionary war in 1779. It was eventually rebuilt in 1826 but then was burnt down for a second time by General Sherman in 1865. People have reported seeing a little girl in the road and a women weeping by a child’s grave. Perspective Old Sheldon Church Ruins Prince William’s Parish Church) Sheldon Church is said to be the first conscious attempt in America to imitate a Greek temple. Built between 1745-1753, the ruins of the church still retain their classic simplicity. Surrounded by moss-draped live oaks, the original three-and-one-half foot thick colonnaded walls of Flemish bond and the four all-header bond portico columns remain, attesting to the solid construction and master craftsmanship which enabled it to withstand two conflagrations and over two hundred fifty years of existence. Complete by 1753, Sheldon Church was built along a row of seven Tuscan columns (six engaged, one outstanding). Sheldon Church was burned by General Augustine Prevost’s British troops in May 1779. General Sherman’s 15th Corps under General John Logan burned Sheldon Church on January 14, 1865 and it was never rebuilt. Old Sheldon Church Ruins in the South Carolina low country.🖤 Just a handful of graves remain but they range from protected tombs dated 1775 to markers for those buried in the late 1980’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. The Sheldon church was built around 1745-1755, burned by the British during the Revolutionary War, was rebuilt and then burned again during the Civil War. It’s now privately owned but open to the public with a request to take care of the property - no climbing, yelling, professional photo shoots, weddings, etc. It is shady, breezy and smells of sea and marsh. I had the good fortune to make a quick stop at Old Sheldon Church Ruins this morning while the groundskeeper was on site. I was blessed to be afforded the opportunity to step inside the usually fenced off interior to walk around for a bit. It was truly remarkable to step inside and stand at the pulpit. Of course, you can expect a few ICM images to follow… Built circa 1751-1757, Prince William’s Parish Church (or more commonly known as Old Sheldon Church Ruins) was burned down in 1779 by General Prevost and his troops during the Revolutionary War. Rebuilt in 1826, it is rumored to have been burned again by Sherman’s troops in the “March to the Sea.” The latter belief has been more recently contested through the publishing of The Leverett Letters claiming the structure was instead gutted by local community members in order to rebuild their own homes burnt during the Civil War. However, it is noted by the National Registrar to have fallen at the hands of Sherman as originally believed. It was added to the NRHP in October 1970. • • • Unfortunately, there are human beings, who for reasons unknown to me, thrive on destroying structures of such timeless beauty. In 2019 the ruins were surrounded by a fence preventing close up exploration of the structure.
