Built 1745-55 and burned twice ... once in 1779 by the British and then again in 1865 during the Civil War. Four images. The trees alone were worth the trip. This trip was Epic! We got history, culture, wild life, sun and sea, cuisine, adventure and most of all time together! No matter where I travel I always seem to come back with some self reflective insight and this trip did not disappoint! I also decided on this trip, that I no longer wanted to be allergic to crab and after years of not having it due to severe reactions I ate it and... no reaction aside from š¤¤š¤¤š¤¤š! Main Door Way of the Old Sheldon Church Ruins in the heart of the South Carolina low country. This church had its first service in 1757, and in the travails of our Nations history was burned by British Troops in 1779, then rebuilt from the remaining walls in 1825 to 1826. Near the end of the civil war General Sherman's troops burned it a second time, and it was never rebuilt yet the walls refused to fall and still stand to this day. #oldsheldonruins #churchruins

I was someone that hated history class, the irony of it allā¦ I love immersing myself into history. There is something about sitting somewhere that is filled with history that is so surreal. To think of all of the past events that took place. These ruins were surrounded by gravestones. I found myself wondering from plaque to plaque wondering about what type of lives the people lead. I came across a couple babies headstones and that hit me way harder than it ever had before. A new sadness I could not imagine, laying your sweet child to rest. As I walked I found myself behind the ruins. On the other side of the fence there were 4 above ground tombs. Iāve only seen those in movies. I wanted so badly to go up and read the words engraved on the top. The fence to protect them was keeping me from being able to get a good vantage point. One of them had writing on the side that gave me an idea how old they were. It read āWithin this tomb lie the remains of Mary Bull wife of John Bull a much beloved and lamented parent. Who died Sep. 1771. Aged 69 years.ā. She had died 252 years ago. That was hard for my mind to comprehend. Standing there, my mind started to drift. I wondered if she knew how many people would come walk by her grave? How many people around the world had met her remains? I wondered what type of person she was, what the land looked like that long ago? Could she comprehend that a small town girl from Chimacum Washington would be standing by her side after flying across the country? The Old Sheldon Church Ruin sits in a secluded spot, framed by massive tree limbs along a road named after the landmark. Columns and exterior walls of what was once a Greek revival church are what remains of the second building erected on the site between 1825 and 1826. The c.1757 church burned to the ground but surviving markers in the churchyard date back to the 18th-century attest to its existence. Over the years the site has suffered from vandals who graffitied bricks with their names or stolen bricks to sell. Sitting among the Mossy Oaks, Old Sheldon Church is one of the most beautiful āruinsā Iāve ever visited. Old Sheldon has witnessed two fires. One during the Revolutionary War and again during the Civil War, multiple hurricanes, and more visitors than one could possibly count! Before I even met my husband I knew THIS was the place I would get married and it happend right here in 2004! . Unfortunately, with the development of the internet and social media, this hidden gem is no longer hidden. Itās owner (St. Helenaās Church, my first employer in Beaufort š) has had to place a fence around this beautiful church due to vandalism taking away from its natural beauty. You can no longer walk through the church. . It is so extremely sad that we live in a world where historical land marks are no longer safe. People want to destroy history and deface private property. š¢ I am so glad we have been able to share this special place with our children before walls had to be put in place to protect it! Endless summer? Is it just me or has it felt like weāve been in an endless summer since the kids were dismissed from school mid-March? And, after a lot of thought, weāve finally made the decision to take the virtual/homeschool option this year. At least for the first semester. We didnāt take this decision lightly. I asked several friends and family members, some of whom are teachers, I know and respect what their opinions are on the current situation. I know that most parents donāt have a flexible schedule nor the ability to work from home like I do. And I am grateful that I have those options. Weāre all just trying to navigate this the best way we know how. No one is doing it perfectly because no one really knows whatās going on and whatās to come. So be gentle with other people and especially parents as they make decisions that best suits their family. Trip day 14. Spent the first half of the day in #atlanta. Checked out the #mlkhistoricsite #mlkhistoricpark while rocking my #mlk t-shirt. :) Stopped by the #krogstreettunnel and on the way there, saw a mural gem with #wutang #wutangclan #rza. Had an amazing lunch at #hattiebs #hattiebshotchicken . So good! Stopped by #vortex as well and then got some coffee for the road from #auroracoffee. About a 5 hour drive to #charleston. Stopped at the #oldsheldonruins. Interesting spot off the beaten path. It was burned down during the American Revolution and again during the Civil War. I had heard of gentleman who would set up his painting of the ruins, paint supplies and sit at the ruins working on his painting. I asked to take his picture, he was so excited to allow me to photograph. I have been back several times but have never run into this guy. Anyone seen him? I would love to frame him a copy if he liked. I photoshopped the black and white in for artistic effects. About half way between Savannah and Charleston we took a short detour to see the Old Sheldon Church Ruins. ā . ā The original church was built between 1745 and 1753. It is believed that the church was first burned in 1779 by the British during the Revolutionary War. This hidden gem of the Low Country is located off the beaten path just north of Savannah in beautiful Beaufort County, South Carolina. The Old Sheldon Church Was originally constructed in 1753, previously known as Prince William's Parish Church. During the Revolutionary War, the church served as a military strategic site. As a result, the church was burned down in 1779 by the British. In 1826, the structure was rebuilt, and with it, it was renamed Sheldon Church, as it was near to the local Sheldon Hall Plantation. In 1865, during the famous Sherman's March to the Sea, the church was again burned down by the Federal Army.
