April 29, 1912 On this day in 1912, the I Street Bridge in Sacramento opened for operation with the crossing of the Southern Pacific No. 19 train bound for San Francisco. The 900-foot-long double deck steel truss swing bridge was designed under the direction of Southern Pacific Railroad’s consulting engineer, John D. Isaacs, and was furnished by the American Bridge Company. In 1912, the I Street Bridge was known as the Southern Pacific Bridge and cost about a million dollars to complete. This bridge replaced an old wooden bridge nearby and was, at the time it was built, the heaviest swing-span bridge in the world as it weighed over 10 million pounds. King was a felon who was paroled in 1991, led police on a high-speed chase through L.A. streets, before he eventually surrendered. Al Balding, born in Toronto on this day in 1924, was the first ever Canadian golfer to win a PGA Tour event held on US soil. He would win three more over his career, finishing 6th on the money list in 1957 with $28,000 — no Canadian would surpass this total until Mike Weir came along! Balding, who quit school in grade 7 to become a caddy, was also a longtime teaching pro, and is shown here in his later years giving lessons to a famous student, hockey icon Bobby Orr. Balding was still at the top of his game at this point — he won the 2000 Canadian Senior Championship at the age of 76, besting competition a good two decades younger!

#OnThisDay 1916 Pearse unconditionally surrendered to General Lowe. 'The five members of the Provisional Government who retreated from the GPO on Friday evening held a meeting in Hanlon’s fish shop at 16 Moore Street on Saturday morning to consider their options. Those present were Pearse, Connolly, Clarke, MacDiarmada and Plunkett. They decided to surrender so as to prevent further loss of life. At 12.45 p.m. Nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell, a member of Cumann na mBan, was sent with a Red Cross flag to inform General Lowe that Pearse wished to negotiate surrender terms. Eventually, Pearse surrendered unconditionally. The surrender order did not reach some of the outposts until the following day, Sunday 30 April'. . . . #OnThisDay 1916 British soldiers shot and/or bayoneted 15 civilian men in Dublin in what became known as the King Street Massacre. Some of the bodies were buried in basements of houses on the street. Gen. Maxwell said the soldiers were just doing their duty. 'By the end of the week, the area was still not cleared. The South Staffordshire regiment under a colonel Taylor advanced, in two days, 150 yards down North King Street, losing 14 dead and 32 wounded. Infuriated with the losses they had suffered, on late Friday evening and early Saturday morning, the troops broke into the homes of the locals and shot or bayoneted 15 civilian men whom they accused of being rebels. They killed three men at 170 North Kings Street whose dead bodies were found to have bayonet wounds, then broke into number 172 and killed two men. In number 174 two more were shot dead. Two more civilian men were killed at number 177 and in 27 North King Street another four men, who all worked there at the Louth Dairy were found dead in a basement and one more man was killed at number 91. The fifteenth James Moore was shot dead on adjoining Little Britain Street by the British troops. About two weeks later, on the 10th of May, Bealin and Healy’s bodies were found buried in the cellar of number 177, when a boy in Mrs O’Rourke’s employ saw blood on the barrels in her cellar and a ‘heavy smell’. Healy, whose body was also found in the cellar appears to have been killed when going to work. At the military court of inquiry, the presiding officer Colonel Maconchy, who thought the South Staffords were, ‘a quiet and very respectable set of men’, ruled that no specific soldier could be held responsible for the killings. The Inquiry ultimately took no action against Colonel Taylor or his troops. By a dark coincidence, Margaret died the very same day as her husband John Naylor, who was serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in Hulluch, France (1916 of course being halfway through World War I). Margaret died two days later, having suffered a gunshot wound while out buying bread for her children, shot by a dum dum hollow point rifle bullet. Her husband John was gassed at Hulluch'. They left three orphaned childred 'Tessie age 10 months, Margaret age 6 and Kitty age 3'. . . . Over a career spanning 50 years, he composed around 3,000 songs and performed worldwide. 🎹 🎼 🎶 Born Edward Kennedy Ellington, he began piano at age 7, and he crafted his inaugural composition, “Soda Fountain Rag,” at 15. Through the ’30s and ’40s, Ellington’s career flourished, marked by hits like “It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing” (1931) and “Sophisticated Lady” (1932), among others. His accolades include the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and the Legion of Honor from France in 1973. #onthisday in 1926 (Apr. 29) the Toronto Maple Leafs international league baseball team played the first game in their new stadium on today's Lake Shore Blvd., near the foot of Bathurst St. Maple Leaf Stadium would be the home of Maple Leafs baseball for the next 42 seasons. Toronto Mayor Thomas Foster threw the first ball during the opening ceremony of the first game. Hon. Joseph Thompson, Speaker of the Legislature played the role of catcher, while M.P. Tommy Church took a vicious swing at the incoming first ball thrown. The first game at the new stadium was a success for the Maple Leafs; they defeated the team from Reading, Pennsylvania 6 to 5 in ten innings. A steady drizzle of spring rain soaked the ball players to the core but they soldiered on, determined to make the paying crowd happy.
