London, my SOUL City. 🪄 🇬🇧 The city that made me who I am. I moved here in 2009 with my best friend @ghazalehghandchi to do my masters degree in marketing at @kingstonuniversity. The friendships stayed strong and naturally I lost touch with some. I came back 6 years ago as an excuse to come back to my second home and did a dance training at @trinitylaban which was so amazing and attended @theafrounicorn wedding & danced & danced and celebrated my beautiful friend. This time I came back to feel loved, to receive love, to be seen, to experience humanity, to connect, to grow and to transform. It’s been a week and my heart is so full. While I’m working through some injuries from my recent car accident, I’m learning to be patient with myself, I’m learning to remind myself that I’m still worthy if I’m not grinding. I’m still worthy if some days I feel a bit broken and feel pain in my body + soul that I can’t get up, wash my face, shower, drink my water, put my running shoes on and go for a run. But you know what, I am still here. I woke up today, my heart is joyful and full and I’m doing my best. Much like many music-obsessed kids of my generation, both ‘Dirty Dancing’ soundtracks proved to very influential, schooling me on artists I didn’t know much about. Otis Redding soundtracks two pivotal moments in ‘Dirty Dancing’ - each spotlight the raw, seductive energy of his voice. First with “Love Man” when Baby falls under Johnny’s spell on the dance floor, and second, with “These Arms Of Mine”, where the two sensually slow dance in Johnny’s cabin, leading to their first kiss. This 2020 mono remaster of Otis Redding’s greatest hits from our friends at @atlanticrecords features 16 timeless recordings. Highlights include “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay”, “Respect”, “Try A Little Tenderness”, “Mr. Pitful”, “Pain In My Heart” and of course, “These Arms of Mine”. Otis Redding - Pain In My Heart | LP Gatefold | 1964 | DOL | Soul, Funk Otis’ debut studioalbum. Like the other Otis Redding record that I own, Otis grabs his originals with covers to create a full lp. It’s also like Otis blue very concise and consistent. The ballads hit a little bit harder this time around. Tracks like stand by me, these arms of mine and you send me are the best tracks on here. The more uptempo funk tracks are fine, but they are too short to make a big impact. This album however is a bit less daring instrumentally than Otis blue. That’s kinda all that there is too say. It’s light on the ears and it has great impactful ballads. While Otis blue is more fulfilling due to it being a more versatile and adventurous album. I still think the more rudimentary approach on this album came out nicely.
