Last week, Karla Janse van Rensburg from North-West University spent a week in the field with the WWDI team gathering data for her BSc Honours project. Karla's project aims to identify blood-feeding ticks and insects found in the habitat utilized by the Waterberg Wild Dogs. Conducting field-based research projects on the Waterberg Wild Dogs can be a tricky task as the packs range freely across a variety of private game farms and nature reserves, making the logistical organization of fieldwork very complicated! We landed at Kwara airstrip late afternoon, and decided to go ‘straight to camp’.. but we made a small diversion past where a pack of wild dog were seen earlier that day and how worth it it was. They were just starting to become more active as the day cooled, and we simply sat and watched them getting up, sitting down, greeting each other, interacting, as they gradually started to move off. Wild dogs - Whilst volunteering in South Africa, I was treated to an amazing encounter from our game viewer. Just as we had finished up for the day, we were heading back to camp when we turned onto the road and our guide Katie grabbed my arm with excitement “Wild dogs!” - a pack of 6 dogs were socialising, just gearing up for a hunt. African Wild Dogs United (AWDU) Guided by our strategic plan and our commitment to enhancing community education and sensitization, we continue to build capacity and leadership of local conservationists in Zambia’s African wild dog stronghold – the Luangwa Valley Ecosystem. In line with this commitment, we welcomed Luckson Banda, a recent graduate from the Copperbelt University to complete his internship at our Luangwa project site. He received intensive training on conservation of the African wild dogs and other large carnivores in the Luangwa Ecosystem. The training was led by Bridget Mayani Nkhoma, Luangwa’s Assistant Manager, a recipient of the 2023 African Wild Dog United (AWDU) Bursary for African Early-Career Wild Dog Conservationists. During Luckson’s training, Bridget mentored and trained Felidah Mwale, Luangwa’s Field Ecologist, and Mwango Mulenga, Luangwa’s Human Carnivore Coexistence Officer, in taking the leading roles as trainers. Portrait of one of the eight members of a pack of Painted Wolves / African Wild Dogs. After an early start, our guides found these rare, endangered predators just as the sun was rising. It was such a very special experience to spend the morning with them. In many visits to many wildlife reserves across Southern and East Africa, I had only seen wild dogs, briefly, once before. Our wild dog pups have by now reached the age of about 8-9 months and it becomes harder to tell them apart from the adult dogs. By now they go out on the hunt with the pack, although they are not fully primed for the kill, and they still largely depend on the rest of the pack to provide with food. It is hard work for the pack to keep up with the growing spurts of those pups and the pack needs to go out for hunting twice a day to keep all those hungry mouths satisfied. It will not be long before they will play their own part in keeping the pack well-fed and safe, but for now they can still goof around and wait for the calls of the pack that a meal is ‘served’ once again. In a couple of months, they will be seen hunting with the pack, to provide for the next generation of wild dog pups. Painted Wolves - if you are lucky enough to go to Africa on safari and your guide mentions that there are Wild dogs active in the area and there’s a chance you could see them, DO NOT dismiss that opportunity!!! All the rangers/drivers/guides I’ve met on my travels through Africa tell stories of so many tourists showing no interest in seeing these amazing animals. I believe it’s a lack of knowledge and they remain a rather unknown animal. The big cats and big five are on everyone’s radar and they don’t realise that there is so much more in the African animal kingdom. There is now a concerted effort to avoid calling them dogs as we think people are visualising stray dogs as you can see in so many places. Understandably people think why on earth would I want to go look at dogs when I might see a wild lion? (Although I’m easily distracted by dog so…). Painted dogs / Painted Wild dogs / African dogs / African Wild dogs / Cape dogs = Painted Wolves 1. They are not hyenas! 2. They are extremely endangered 3. Incredible hunters that work as a team 4. The Waterberg Wild Dog Initiative is honored to have been chosen as the beneficiary of OP RAG 2024's student-led fundraising efforts! Yesterday, a new GPS tracking collar was fitted to the TOOG Area Pack, further strengthening the reliability of the GPS tracking on the pack following the devastating poisoning incident in December. Over the last week, the TOOG Area Pack has been venturing south, expanding the home range that's been recorded for them over the last three years. The Waterberg Wild Dog population ranges across privately-owned game farms, livestock farms, and nature reserves. Since August 2020, the TOOG Area Pack has been recorded utilising over 55 different privately-owned properties and over 125,000Ha. Thank you to the numerous community members who have helped the WWDI team get into contact with new properties as the pack moves south. The Waterberg Wild Dog Initiative (WWDI) is growing and we're hiring a new team member! 🐾 The WWDI is looking to appoint a Project Coordinator to join its small but growing pack. The WWDI is a non-profit African wild dog conservation organization based in the Waterberg, South Africa. The WWDI works closely with the community to conserve the free-roaming, Endangered African wild dog population across a wide range of privately-owned game farms, livestock farms, and nature reserves in the region. The purpose of the position is to strengthen the WWDI’s implementation of innovative strategies designed to mitigate threats facing the free-ranging population of African Wild Dogs in the Waterberg and promote their co-existence in the region. The dynamic role requires regular travel in remote areas for fieldwork, meetings, and other engagements throughout the Waterberg as well as attending meetings and workshops throughout South Africa. On the hunt with African wild dogs! A thrilling morning following their characteristic 'hoo' call led to a fantastic sighting of the pack scouting the bushveld for their prey. Quick and agile, Lucan did an admirable job keeping up with the wild dogs before they finally dashed away into the trees - simply magical 😄 Also known as painted wolves thanks to the beautiful colours splashed across their fur, these highly endangered carnivores are, surprisingly, neither dog nor wolf. In fact, over two million years ago their unique genus - Lycaon, which means 'wolf-like' - split from a common ancestor with modern-day wolves and domestic dogs, a separation that is akin to humans and chimpanzees. They are highly evolved and specialised at hunting on the African savannah, with a record success rate of 80% thanks to their acute senses, athleticism, keen intellect and social structure. Last week, the Waterberg Wild Dog Initiative (WWDI) received a new 2023 Toyota Hilux from Toyota South Africa Motors to upgrade its 2021 Toyota Hilux. Toyota SA has been an invaluable supporter of the WWDI since 2021. Their support enables the team to be mobile in the field, tracking the packs and collecting data that is used to better conserve the unique population. Field-based conservationists will know that your vehicle is like a team member. While we say hello to our newest team member - the beautiful 2023 Toyota Hilux DC 4x4, we would like to say goodbye and pay tribute to our previous team member. The 2021 Hilux helped the team travel over 50,000km through the Waterberg and surrounding regions, going as far as Golden Gate National Park for the 2023 SAWMA conference! The majority of its mileage was done on the roads of the Waterberg, which vary in condition from beautiful tarmac to 4x4 course to undrivable! Throughout this, the Hilux averaged an incredible 7.8l/100km! Over two years, the 2021 Hilux has helped our team fit 11 tracking collars to Waterberg Wild Dogs and saw the capture of 7 Waterberg Wild Dogs that have and will be translocated to re-establish African wild dog populations into formally protected areas. The 2021 Hilux has spent countless hours in the field, including early mornings, late nights, and long days.
