Last week we had the pleasure to receive our partners of the Biolamer project in Barcelona for the general assembly meeting. We had the opportunity to meet in our space #transfolabbcn and we held some very productive and fruitful meetings during which we had a follow up on the evolution of the project by all entities. We also had the chance to explain the updates on the new bioreactor design and the visit ended with the fourth edition of Trash Talks, where we had the chance to host three wonderful talks on biomaterials and their innovative applications. 😞 plastic drinking bottles are even more harmful than expected. Not only as a waste product but also in its primary function as a water bottle. Per bottle of water you ingest hundreds of thousands of tiny particles of plastic. This can be concluded from new research by scientists from Columbia University in New York, among others. There has long been evidence of plastic particles floating around in disposable bottles of spring water, but the concrete number of an average of 240,000 particles per liter was not previously mentioned. It is also 10 to 100 times higher than previously estimated. The health effects still need to be further investigated. Granulate, tiny grains of less than 5 millimeters in size, are used in industry to make all kinds of plastic products. The average stomach of a petrel contains 4 to 5 of these pellets. In the photo, the stomach of a washed-up seagull has been opened. Many of these granules are lost during the production and transport of plastic. Our New Year’s resolution started early this year. We are making a family resolution to cut out as much plastic from our house has possible in 2024. This is not easy it will be HARD! Our kids have busy working parents and we get stuck on buying packets of crisps and cereal bars for pack lunch boxes. Well school is OUT for my kids, so now we can take the opportunity to REFUSE making the purchase and change our habits. So in 2024 we are refusing to buy plastic wrapped snacks, and instead we are practicing making them over these summer holidays. Homemade crisps, homemade bars, bliss balls, pita chips, homemade soft tortillas… these are all foods we can already make, but now we need to get in the habit of making enough of these “products” in-house so that we do not reach for the packaged version for lunchboxes next year! I approach much of my family life in the same way as my work life. RESEARCH. I am a researcher. Insights from the Contain Your Waste Challenge... For one transformative week, our family of 5 (which expanded to 7 for the last three days) embarked on a mission to contain our waste. The goal? To see just how much we could reduce our contribution to landfill. Here's what we learned: Firstly, let's acknowledge that composting and recycling were crucial in diverting waste from the trash bin. Secondly, astonishingly (or maybe not), about 98% of our waste was plastic, (mostly soft plastics) and over 90% of our waste was from the kitchen, revealing just how pervasive plastic is in our grocery shops. Inspired by the challenge, these are our commitments moving forward: 🌿 switching to compostable tea options 🌿 opting for loose fruits and veggies (despite the cost) 🌿 declining unnecessary receipts 🌿 finding sweet treats in 100% recyclable packaging (not soft plastics). I'm thinking chocolate, ice-cream & biscuits, because indulgence doesn't have to cost the Earth. This week has been a revelation, teaching us that every choice has a footprint. Reducing waste goes hand in hand with reevaluating our consumption habits. We are delighted to provide you with an update on the progress of the OCEAN HEROES PLASTIC CHALLENGE project. Since the commencement of the school year, our SOA- Yaoundé Hub Project has successfully launched the #OceanHeroesPlasticChallenge. As part of our campaign, we have visited numerous schools in Yaoundé and established partnerships, with the aim of empowering young students to become ocean heroes. Through this initiative, we are delivering training on ocean conservancy and waste management, specifically focusing on combating plastic pollution. Our commitment extends beyond the initial visit, as we are continuously providing support and resources to these students, with the expectation that they will serve as ambassadors in their respective communities. As part of its shared mission to fight single-use plastic packaging waste, the UK Refill Coalition has this week launched a new pilot at @aldiuk Solihull Store. It’s estimated that if every household in the UK refilled just one item per week, it would eliminate over 1.4 billion items of single-use packaging every year. The Refill Coalition - a group consisting of @aldiuk @ocadouk and the supply chain solutions company @chep_global and convened by GoUnpackaged in 2020 - will plot an innovative reusable bulk vessel that has been developed to deliver refills at scale for key staples and household products. Posted @withregram • @cee_india CEE had the privilege of taking part in the 'Engaging Youth through Education and Advocacy for Solutions to Plastic Pollution' challenge under UNEP's Tide Turner Plastic challenge at ICSE 2023. Our involvement allowed us to witness firsthand how this endeavor has benefited every stakeholder involved, particularly through informal education. We discussed not only the problem of plastic pollution but also explored feasible solutions, inspiring everyone involved to take action in their respective communities. CEE had the privilege of taking part in the 'Engaging Youth through Education and Advocacy for Solutions to Plastic Pollution' challenge under UNEP's Tide Turner Plastic challenge at ICSE 2023. Our team had a very successful meeting to plan our upcoming project, the SOA Microgrant Ocean Heroes Plastic Challenge! Our main focus is to empower the next generation of Ocean Heroes by working with schools to teach them about the importance of taking care of our oceans and managing waste. We will carefully choose a small group of students who will receive special training and become ambassadors in their schools. They will inspire and motivate their classmates and communities to make positive changes for our oceans. As part of their role, these ambassadors will also have the opportunity to write petitions to their local authorities and councils, advocating for better ocean conservancy practices. In recognition of their efforts, their schools will be rewarded. We're not doing this alone! We're inviting other partners and supporters to join us in creating a cleaner and more eco-friendly school environment. 🌍 Lost Kindliness: Reshaping Perceptions Through Design In the "Lost Kindliness" project, my mission was to tackle the negative impact of littering on mental health, animals, and the environment. Through design, I aimed to inspire change in public attitudes and actions towards littering, fostering empathy and driving positive transformation. Research was key—diving deep into the reasons behind littering, drawing wisdom from Cicero's teachings, and exploring strategies to engage people across generations in combatting litter. Challenges were met head-on—understanding the complex issue, crafting a resonant narrative, and ensuring the campaign resonated widely and genuinely. The heart of the project was "Lost Kindliness," personifying litter to evoke empathy and spur action. The results? A campaign that turned litter into emotive entities, resonating through colours, typography, and a dynamic "Help" logo. It was personal, authentic, and impactful. For me, this project wasn't just about design. It was a platform to voice the urgency of littering's consequences. Beyond aesthetics, I aimed to evoke emotions and ignite change. The journey aimed to redefine perceptions through design, encouraging a shift in littering behaviours.
