I‘m taking a bit of a break from Instagram currently, partly because I don’t have anything new to share, partly because I just generally don’t feel very good atm and for the most part because Instagram annoys and bores me to death. Not only because of the algorithm and no-one-sees-my-posts bla bla, but more so because everything is so repetitive. The content gets faster, brighter, louder, better but it also is just so so boring. Overwhelming and boring at the same time. (Not very eloquently put, but maybe you can relate). My first red dot! 🔴 This juried exhibition is the third I’ve entered, and the first physical gallery where I’ve listed work for sale. I’m thrilled and grateful that my linocut print, Jumping Mouse, has sold. Yesterday, I visited the gallery to see the red dot for myself and to take a walk around this beautiful space. The gallery backs onto a river where there is a sweet wooden bridge connecting to a footpath, and there are several lovely gardens that are bursting with colour. The gallery itself is beautifully designed, both inside and out. Beyond thrilled! 🐭 I just heard that my print, Jumping Mouse, was accepted into the Oshawa Art Associations 56th Annual Juried Exhibition at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery! This print was inspired by the jumping mouse that ran into my boot on a City of Pickering trail near a stunning cluster of eight yellow lady’s slippers and the favourite roosting spot of a question mark butterfly. I used material from my photos and nature journals of this location to inform the additional subject matter in the print. Yellow lady’s slippers were a feature in my grade six French immersion project about northern flora, which is a special connection for me. Monsieur Campbell, if you’re out there, thank you! And yes, everything was done by hand and in cursive back then! I’m very grateful to all those who put time and effort into the show, especially the volunteers, and to the jurors, Pauline Bradshaw @pbradshaw56 and Colin Whitebread @colinwhitebread for selecting my work. Pine Creek Plunge Layers ❤️🦫 This print is called a reduction print, which means that every time a new colour layer is printed, further material is removed to produce the next layer. Although this method can (in some respects) make it easier to align the layers, once the process is started, one cannot go back and reprint previous colours, as the block has been altered. Furthermore, one must decide in advance how many prints will be created since one cannot make more later on. Here, I’ve posted the layers separately so you can see what they look like disassembled. For the last colour layer, very little of the block remains, as this layer includes only small details. PRINTMAKING POSITIVES #marchmeetthemaker There are so, so many positives for which to be grateful - here is a top 5 selection. 1 - passion. I am infinitely thankful that I’ve found something that excites and inspires me, that offers limitless opportunities to learn and grow, and that allows me to explore a connection with wildlife and the natural world. 2 - my space. Our house is small and I don’t have a dedicated studio. Because of this, my kids, husband and cat are always close by while I’m printmaking. I love the company. We can all be crammed together doing different activities, and everyone is cozy and happy. 3 - my job. Even though I look forward to carving and printing when I get home, I’m so lucky to have a full-time job I love. Because I’m not dependent on income from my art, I’m able to just enjoy the process and be creative in ways that make me happy. 4 - progress. Even if I only have time to do a tiny bit of work each day, it all adds up. 5 - support. So many people who both know me and don’t know me have offered support, encouragement and opportunities in so many different ways. Pine Creek Plunge 💦🦫 I’ve worked out the layers for this little reduction print I’m making for Sally Caston’s Global Print Exchange. Since the theme is My Backyard, it only made sense to create a print of Nic, our local beaver mom, and kit, swimming in the pool just above the beaver dam in our neighbourhood park. “Spring on the Backside of Mt. Meno” is finally finished! I embarked on this print at the suggestion of a friend whose taste and expertise in art I greatly respect. Mt. Nebo, which can be seen when driving down I-15 in Utah between Provo and Nephi, is not as popular a subject as Mt. Timpanogos, it’s sister peak to the north. That may be that from the I-15 side, it’s not very spectacular. However, views from the backside, which you can access from the Nebo Loop Road, are quite breathtaking. This is one of the most ambitious projects I’ve taken on. At 16” x 20”, it’s quite a bit larger than most of my other prints. The larger size means a lot more carving between layers. (Keep in mind the tools don’t get any bigger; my largest gouge is about 1/4 inch wide.) It also has more layers - 16 to be exact - and 17 colors. I really appreciated the responses to my story poll that offered a selection of different designs, but I realized that I needed to move in a different direction. I wasn’t feeling excited about the designs I’d drafted, and that led me to believe that they just weren’t right for me. I needed something fun that evoked the delight and excitement I feel during my nature experiences. As soon as I sketched this design, I felt a connection. I will be carving the beaver for the final shop logo, but I’m very relieved that I’ve finally come up with something I feel reflects my approach to printmaking. The photo collage in the third frame includes the nature experiences that inspired the design. Along with the critter quartet, I’ve incorporated a variety of dried vegetation that is common in our area, the dried ghost pipes being my favourite. The next step is to carve a key block that will serve as the template for the four blocks (one for each colour) that will be layered during the printing process. “Green River Overlook in Canyonlands NP” is the fourth in my series of Utah National Parks. “Zion Morning” and “Bryce in Winter” have both sold out, but I still have a few of “Spring in Capitol Reef” available. This view of Canyonlands posed a big challenge. In order to depict the vastness of the landscape, I had to use multiple colors to create the impression of distance. In other words, the colors in the foreground needed to be warmer and brighter than those in the background. Rather than doing them on separate layers, the colors were mixed on the brayer (roller) which created a gradient effect on almost every layer. Also, as mentioned previously, I experimented with going from dark to light, rather than light to dark, which is my usual approach. Both methods have their own limitations, but I felt like going dark to light (with the exception of the sky and distant mountains) would create the texture I was seeking. The other challenging thing about reduction prints is that it’s very difficult to tell if the color hues and shades you apply on a layer are correct because you don’t really know until later layers are applied and you can see them in the context of the surrounding colors. Gratefully, these seemed to work out okay. (I’ve had to scrap previous prints a few times because one color wasn’t correct.) At best, it’s a series of educated guesses and crossed fingers. This original linocut print required 25 colors on 12 layers and I did an edition of twelve. This is my third year running this account and I still feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. I got better at taking „pretty“ photos for sure and I learned to make reels, but I always struggle with what I want to say. Coming up with captions is a pain and I often end up with just some random sentence about the print I‘m posting. Same with stories: I don’t know what to share- me making prints? So repetitive! My every day life? Quite boring tbh. Sharing other people’s posts? Insta says no-no. It all feels increasingly shallow and empty and I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can change that, because I‘m kinda sick of it all feeling like a chore. Añoranza, 1998 - Belkis Ayón Gaze into the haunting eyes of Añoranza, a mysterious collograph by Cuban printmaker Belkis Ayón. Staring back from the shadows, this solitary female figure makes us wonder about her hidden tales of longing and sorrow. Ayón was fascinated by the secret fraternal society called Abakuá, aiming to unveil its hidden mysteries in her art. She developed a unique style of printmaking called collography, building up textures and contrasts through layers of paper. This adds ghostly depth to the enigmatic world she creates. At Home on the Horse Farm ❤️🐴 Test print. This print features a horse farm that is dear to my heart. The most beautiful people own and run this gem, which is where my son and I used to ride. Our cat, who was a kitten at the time, came from this magical place, and is pictured tiptoeing along the fence in the foreground. A barn owl perches on a post, preparing to set off on a hunting trip, while its partner hovers high above. I have a couple of minor adjustments to make before I start printing the edition of 100, which I hope will happen next weekend. The block is 10” square and will be printed in Cranfield oil-based ink on 12” square Legion paper.
