“We have vowed to protect the remnants of our culture at whatever cost, and the culture cannot exist without the land.” - George Jarrett Helm, JR A year ago I stood with the lāhui and wept as Hawai’i ha’e was flown in distress at the base of our Maūna Kea. The mountain of our origin story. I watched as community gathered to feed each other, nurse and educate each other all the while not breaking protocol as law enforcement, government officials and TMT had hoped we would. If you were blessed enough to make it to the Maūna you can vow for the electricity that was surging up out of the ground and into each of our bodies as we gathered in sacred space. Although COVID brought the gatherings and physical protection of the dear Maūna to a halt, the fight for sovereignty, rightful land occupancy and ownership not only in Hawai’i nei but across the moana happens every day. I miss home and these moments more often than not and it’s why more and more I find myself retreating to the mountain ranges of Turtle Island and the Indigenous people’s lands of which I currently occupy. Happy Lā Keala Pāpolohiwa a Kāne everyone! First full day of summer. I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and love and solidarity for the environment and the culture here in Hakipu’u. I haven’t posted much since this whole thing was really about due diligence, but I think all of it is summed up best by my incredible wife Diana: 💗🌹We have had a busy week on Johnson Road in Hakipu’u. Our family was supporting the lineal descendants protect their iwi kupuna and stop further pumping of raw sewage in Kaneohe Bay. Ian and our neighbor Kolea Fukumitsu were arrested by Kualoa Ranch (John Morgan) for blocking the road when they were going to run a new line to a broken cesspool which he would only agree to stop working on for one day. This was the breaking point after already dealing with them pumping the cesspool straight into the auwai that is next to the ocean and the Fukumitsu’s trying to work with the ranch for months to stop using heavy machinery to change landscape where there are known family burials. Everyone has their own perspective and ours is formed by Ian’s archeology experience, pacific island studies background along with his intensive research and time spent in the place we love and call home. For me this is not about who believes and who doesn’t. It’s about Kualoa following the cesspool replacement policies, environmental laws, archeological process, and notifying community when they are responsible for a heath hazard like raw sewage where my kids play regularly. #mypointofview #malamahonua #thesurfprofessor #kukiaimauna #puuhuluhuluuniversity #puuhonuaopuuhuluhulu #alohaaina #lahui #aloha #culturegram

So I shot everything with one prime lense, no auto focus, everything manual. What it forced me to do as to be more considerate of my surroundings and how I frame. Made me look for natural lighting and how I could use it best. What it did that I’ve never done till this weekend, was ask complete strangers if it was okay for me to photo them. Which in turn, since I was 100% manual.,They had to pause for me to focus 🙈 In all honesty, I just asked one person, he was homeless(not the friendly looking type) and after that I gave him some money for his time. I’m sure he will appreciate me stopping and taking a moment to acknowledge him, when I know most people want to avoid any type of eye contact. His name was Henry from Kalihi.

Driving home from Roy today. I could have been thinking about my blessings and in a way, I was. I could have been thinking about my joys and again, in a way, I was. I was thinking about all of our kia’i on Mauna Kea, and the conditions they’re embracing. I say embracing because while it may be physically uncomfortable to be in the cold, wet, wind, rain and sometimes snow, they greet these elements with joy because they’re our ancestors. I was thinking that I should shut up about my husband turning down the heat in the truck, and be thankful that we have strong, vibrant kia’i who are standing for us. Know you’re not forgotten, know you’re in the forefront of our minds all day, every day. Know that we send mana and aloha to each of you constantly.
