This is, in my opinion, the most effective looking monster from the Universal Classic Monsters stable. I feel like I could outwit the Wolfman, Dracula, and Frankenstein, but the Creature? No, I'm pretty much a dead man. For scenes on land, the actor Ben Chapman wore the suit. For all underwater scenes, Ricou Browning would spend up to 4 minutes submerged. March 5, 1954: Universal extends its dominance as Hollywood’s monster studio into the 1950s with the nationwide release of “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” (the film had premiered in Detroit on February 12). Designed by Milicent Patrick, Disney’s first woman animator, the creature suit, arguably, remains the best monster prosthetic in film history (or at least a photo finish with the “ALIEN” xenomorph suit). The thing genuinely looks real—no sags, bags, or visible zippers, etc. The creature is the last of the great Universal monsters. I’m not a big fan of the two creature sequels, but this original holds up well. Still a fun watch, and the film was a clear influence on Spielberg when making “JAWS.” Bravo Jack Arnold, Julie Adams, Richard Carlson, and all those in front of and behind the camera. Today marks the first anniversary of Ricou Browning´s death (February 16, 1930 – February 27, 2023) American director, actor, producer, screenwriter, underwater cinematographer and stuntman. He was best known for his underwater stunt work, playing the Gill-man in Creature from the Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature and The Creature Walks Among Us. He was the last surviving original actor to play any of the Universal Classic Monsters. Browning also co-created Flipper and directed the underwater sequences in 1965's Thunderball, the fourth James Bond movie by Eon Productions. Browning died on February 27, 2023 at his home in Southwest Ranches, Florida at the age of 93. Happy 70th anniversary to the limited release of Creature From the Black Lagoon, the classic Universal monster movie about about a group of scientists who encounter a piscine amphibious humanoid in the waters of the Amazon; the Creature, also known as the Gill-man (Ben Chapman on land and Ricou Browning underwater). This was a movie I loved watching just for the perfectly staged underwater sequences where Browning provided the creature's swimming and had a way of making you feel unnerved and unsafe from from how they lurk in the shadows and emerge. #MasterSardusArchive - The Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954) I recently rewatched this classic and when I looked it up I was astounded to find out that its original release date was February 12th, 1954… 70 YEARS AGO! It was also released on Valentine’s Day weekend, cause you know an aquatic monster kidnapping movie is definitely for lovers! I have always been in awe of the Gill Man design, primarily designed by Disney animator Milicent Patrick (even though she was denied credit for YEARS) alongside Bud Westmore/Jack Kevan/Chris Mueller Jr. The costume is just monster movie perfection, equal parts terrifying and functional. Groundbreaking. Actor Ricou Browning really brings the Creature to life with his underwater work in the suit, which was paired with Ben Chapman playing the Creature on land… both turn in masterful performances. Julie Adams as the titular “target of the monsters misguided affections” is also stunning. Great movie… my favorite of all the Universal Horror films.
