I love sci-fi/creature horror so Monsters looked like something I would enjoy. There is nothing like a good alien monster movie so I had to give it a shot. Six years ago NASA discovered the possible alien life. We sent a probe to gather samples but upon returning the probe crashed near the Mexican border. Soon after the crash, new life forms began to emerge and the whole area had to be quarantined off and the American and Mexican militaries contain the creatures. Andrew and Sam must cross the quarantine zone on foot, avoiding the creatures to make it back to the United States. This is a fun alien/creature feature. The creatures are scary but also unique and cool looking. The story is pretty exciting, even if it is a bit predictable. It has its faults but overall it was pretty good and it kept my interest. The Body Snatcher * released in 1945 * starring Boris Karloff, Henry Daniell, and Bela Lugosi * produced by Val Lewton * black and white horror film The plot: A doctor must use shady means in order to acquire more cadavers for his lessons. I have a limited knowledge of Karloff’s films, but this has to be one of his best performances. Creepy, ruthless, and menacing. One particularly chilling scene stood out to me involving the young street singer. It’s not what you see that’s impactful, but what you hear, or in this case, don’t hear. One important lesson I’ve learned from horror films, new and old, is that you can’t escape your past. Side note: This was the last film in which Karloff and Lugosi would both appear together in. New Life (2023) is this month’s rental in the horror group I am part of. I went in totally blind for this one, and I sure am glad I did. Jessica is on the run and heading north for the border. Elsa, a fixer, is assigned to bring her in. As the pursuit unfolds so to the details of what is really going on and what is actually at stake. This was a beautiful thriller, a slow burn done very well. Jessica’s story is nonlinear which helps build the background and give more context; while Elsa’s story is woven in until the two finally intersect. They really have you focused somewhere else and when I realized what was actually going on it made it so much more fun. This is not the scariest of movies, so if you’re looking for violence, blood and gore, this movie isn’t for you. After enjoying the first Blackwell Ghost movie, I had to rent The Blackwell Ghost 2 (2018). This one picks up right where the first one left off.. that package at his door. If you haven’t seen the first one, I highly recommend you go do that, then read this review. Turner is heading back to the house after receiving a package from a woman who actually knew Mrs. Blackwell. After finding out some new information, he decides to spend 3 more nights at the house. Turner was really hoping for good footage since the house is being sold soon; it seems like he got exactly what he wanted. This one was just as good and fun as the first one. It also made me want to keep watching the rest of them; which I will most likely do soon. Anddddd we are right back to the low star count 😅 @h.everend.author tried to warn me! I mean, what could I say? They took the only thing that made the hauntings authentic (not seeing the demons) and showed us everything. Now we know that the demons look like horrible CGI 👻 probably the worst acting in the franchise as well. Lowlifes (2024) is about a family of four on their yearly family vacation. When they come across some local guys their plans change and they end up having to stay at a rural homestead for the night. What happens that night is not what either family expected. This one started out nice and bloody, really got me excited for what was to come. I do enjoy when they get going fast then back off to set up the story and introduce the characters. This movie gets you feeling uncomfortable right off the bat. When you are out in the middle of nowhere, running into aggressive strangers is anyone’s worst nightmare. But what comes next you would never guess, I know I sure as shit wasn’t expecting it. The gore and violence in this is great, the shower scene was fun right away and set the tone for the campiness to follow. This movie was not what I was expecting but in the best of ways. I love a good surprise and this definitely had more than one. This was like if Funny Games and You’re Next had a baby and threw in its own flair and I definitely wasn’t mad about any of it. This movie was fun all around: the story, the gore and violence, just enough camp and a great twist. I love a good early 2000’s horror movie so when Hulu recommended The Fog (2005) I figured why not. The movie takes place on a beautiful little island off the Oregon coast and guess what happens… there is a creepy ass fog that rolls in and brings some chaos for the quiet island. After a charter boat disturbs an old bag on the ocean floor, a super dense fog rolls into the small island. It’s not just that it’s a creepy fog moving against the wind but there is something in the fog that is killing the towns people. That’s when the nice little island town learns the secrets of their past the hard way. I even had a hard time writing a summary of this movie it was so bad. The acting is mediocre, the story is pretty boring and predictable and the CGI fog is pretty bad. I am bummed I wasted 100 minutes of my life watching this movie, it was really bad. Invasion of the Body Snatchers novel - by: Jack Finney - first published in 1955 as a short titled “The Body Snatchers” This novel is an updated and extended version released in 1978 to go along with the new movie. But its story, is what the original 1956 film is based on, not the 1978 version. Overall, the novel and movie are very similar. The novel does provide more in depth information about the pods spreading and taking over the town. Surprisingly, they were actually discovered a year earlier, but no one paid attention to it. The biggest difference that I found was in the ending. Dr. Miles Bennell sets fire to all of the pods while they are lined up in the fields, destroying them. There is no government intervention saving the town. The Collector (2009) is one of those early 2000’s horror movies that somehow slipped under my radar all these years. I noticed it even had a sequel so I figured it’s finally time to watch it. Arkin is an ex-con turned handyman with an ex-wife that needs to pay off loan sharks. In order to get the money, Arkin plans to burglarize his bosses house while he is out of town. When he gets to the house he realizes he is not alone and it is not just the family. It starts off with the opening scene setting the tone for a creepy and violent movie. At only 90 minutes it really doesn’t waste anytime getting into the excitement. This one is violent and bloody in the best sort of way. Plus who doesn’t love booby traps?! That phone scene will forever make me look at the receiver before I put it to my face. If you want violence and gore, this movie is for you. The anxiety level is through the roof while also having some great kills and an insane ending. Late Night with the Devil * released in 2024 * rated R horror film * starring David Dastmalchian The plot: In an attempt to boost ratings, a 70s late night talk show decides to bring on a possessed girl during a live broadcast. What works so well: - David Dastmalchian in the lead role - the cheesy talk show comedy - Michael Ironside’s narration - the 70s look, style, and feel - nice build up - leaving some things unanswered The final act went a little too far for my liking but others would easily disagree with me. But overall, the film is well done, entertaining, and an excellent original idea. I hadn’t seen Annihilation (2018) since it first came out; all I could remember was that scary ass bear so it was time for a rewatch. I love a good sci-fi horror movie and this one is so damn beautiful. After getting detained by the military, Lena learns of an other worldly occurrence happening in the United States. Lena’s husband was one of the soldiers sent to investigate what they call “the shimmer”. A year later he comes back nearly dead and is the only person to come out of the shimmer. In order to hopefully save her husband, Lena volunteers to be part of a group of scientists that are going into the shimmer to try and find answers to save Kane and stop the shimmer from spreading. When they get into the shimmer, it is nothing like they could have imagined and the basic laws of nature no longer apply. This is such a great movie. It is absolutely beautiful and intelligent while being so terrifying. The scene with the bear is so unbelievably creepy, it is more scary and unnerving every time I watch it. I honestly don’t know if I could have sat there and not moved while the bear was sniffing me. Last night's bed time movie, I've seen this one a good times now and as i do enjoy it there's something about it that has never sat well with me. Released in 1993 this is about Mark, who after the death of his mother goes to love with his aunt while his father attends one last business trip but he starts to notice that something isn't quite right with his cousin Henry. Now I wouldn't call this one a horror or even a psychological thriller, it more plays out like a mellow drama with mild elements of the latter two mixed in and I do mean mild. There's not much in the way of tension except for three moments and there's one genuinely sinister line that Henry says but he doesn't come across as sinister or creepy throughout the movie but instead just comes across as a smarmy wee prick. I'm not sure if that's deliberate or not, either way I just wasn't convinced. Mikey does it better. It is quite well acted for the most parts though, that's mainly down to Elijah Wood and Wendy Crewson giving the best performances in the whole movie. I think of you were to replace Macaulay Culkin with any other child actor at the time it might have been a bit more intense but that's just performance preference. As the movie progresses Henry's behaviour does get more violent and his mask slowly starts to slip but makes it out like Mark is just acting out because of his mum's death and even after the incident on the lake it still plays out that way until the last 20 minutes of the movie when a very subtle yet slightly obvious clue about Henry's brothers death that's mentioned throughout the movie falls into our lap but is quickly swept away as it kinda rushes to the climax. Which I will say does bring a huge smile to my face each and every time I see it. There's really not much else to say about this one as it kinda plays by the numbers after the first maybe 15 minutes and it's trailer kinda shows everything you need to know anyway. There are a ton of cult classic zombie movies out there. The genre just gives us memorable moments, like a zombie fighting a shark and memorable kills, like taking out all your zombie friends with a lawnmower. I think the genre gives us a lot to talk about and not to mention I believe it’s been one of the genres where Black actors have gotten to shine, from epic heroes like Ben, Selena, Sugar, and Michonne, to wild villains like Big Daddy.
