I’ve admired the work of artist Maxime Jean Lefebvre for a while and was delighted to recently visit his studio and write about his work for GoLocalProv this week. Originally from France, Maxime came to Rhode Island to study printmaking at RISD and was a resident at The Steel Yard as well. His work can be found in the WaterFire store, too. Maxime is a visionary artist, whose work brings together printmaking and ceramics, probing ideas like militarism in our society. I am sadly not going to make it down to Gagosian to see their Francesca Woodman show which so many folks have sent me, but wanted to share a short appreciation for her. I wrote my undergrad thesis on Francesca in 2013, when her work was at the peak of its re-appreciation. An inventive photographer who engaged with the Feminist lexicon of her time, she created work that was also entirely her own. Woodman died by suicide at just 22 and some people read her images with haunting prescience. Most of her extant work was made when she was a student and I’ve always felt her oeuvre represented her tackling ideas and attempting to chart her place in the world, as any young artist would. Researching and writing about Francesca’s photography at the same age she was when she created it was a powerful and life-altering experience. It gave me a profound love for her and her work and for thinking deeply and empathetically about art and artists more generally. I learned so much of what I know about art writing from Francesca. I think of Francesca and her potent, sensitive photographs all the time. I also often wonder what direction her work would have taken had her life been different. I’m grateful that I got to know her a bit by writing about her photography, which still resonates with me so much. Our current artist in residence Sarah Plummer. @speckhero is a collaborative lithographer, writer, and maker in LA, originally from Australia. Sarah is captivated by the alchemic expanse of lithography and loves things that seem impossible. Her printmaking studio is called Speck Editions. Her collaborative printmaking means is that she works with artists who normally have an exclusive relationship with their medium of choice (painting, sculpture, music…) to explore the unique visual language of the print process. She sees profound wisdom in rocks, as with all things that have been living a long time. She uses the word living, for it is old Indigenous news that non-human entities such as trees, rocks and bodies of water carry forth an essential ancestral consciousness. During her time at Warnecke Ranch, she’s planning on collecting natural materials including pigments. She has a particular interest in and attunement to color. Given her relationship to limestone as a lithographer, she is drawn to mineral pigments. She says Northern California is an excellent place for pigment foraging. She collects various shades of kino (botanical gum) to use as a pigment binder in paint and ink mixing, as well as to experiment with as a substitute for gum arabic in the lithographic process. For the last few months, she has been working the scaffolding for a piece of literary non-fiction that addresses the nature of collaboration, the chemistry of lithography, and how these things parallel our relationships with ecology in the Anthropocene. In this essay, she will venture into some Australian geology. Sarah will draw from her teaching experience during her stay to teach a small paper marbling workshop.
