If not, they were one of the most successful hip hop groups to come out of the west coast of Canada in the past 25 years. Now 2/3 of Swollen Members @robtheviking and @prevailprevail have joined forces to form @xltheband who are headlining @gardencitygrooves 10th Anniversary Finale on Sat. Feb 17th at White Eagle Hall. The talent of both of these artists is immense. Rob the Viking is an accomplished musician (pianist) but his talents producing albums evolved into his main strength gaining numerous awards for his work with Swollen Members over 15+ years. After acquiring the rights back from Camo Bear #SnakTheRipper saw fit to press up his breakout album #WhiteDynamite on vinyl late this spring. There's something special about the early 2010's for how close the Stompdown movement was and how frequently all the artists collaborated and moved together. I don't think this is quite my favourite album of of his but its up there. Significant in the Vancouver scene and just Snaks career overall. Obviously Forgotten is the smash hit but there's other excellent album cuts that remain in his concert setlists to this day whether it's Bombay Dreams, Yup, Until Yer Dead and Famous And Broke (my personal favourite on the album). I would've thought this one would be more sought after. Sophmore album #BadDreams from Canadian rap trio #SwollenMembers released in 2001. Their most commercially successful album thanks to the singles Bring It Home and Fuel Injected. The latter of which catapulted them to national stardom and Juno awards. I managed to nab an OG pressing used from the Revolver spot in New Westminster BC. So far it's just their two most recent albums and this one here. 1999's #Balance was the debut LP from Vancouver based trio Swollen Members consisting of MCs #Madchild #Prevail and producer extraordinaire #RobTheViking Most of Mad and Prevs come up took place between Vancouver, San Fransisco and Los Angeles in the mid to late 90's so by the time their debut rolled around they had already formed connections with a lot of the west coast underground. Whether it was #DilatedPeoples #SoulAssassins or #Hieroglyphics hence great appearances from Dilated, Alchemist, Son Doobie, Del The Funky Homosapien and a recently solo Everlast. The twentieth anniversary of their sophomore has already came and went but as a hip-hop head from Western Canada, their discography is something I always look out for.

@spacekamp is one of the first duo’s that we covered at Daily Reggae. It’s been nearly two years, and it’s been so much fun following their growth and passion. Space Kamp blends reggae, rock, hip hop and electronic music, and the duo’s latest album, “Butterfly Effect (BE)” cements their (Adoo and Oskee’s) place in the budding reggae rock and hip hop scene. Once again, the duo collaborated with @robtheviking on their album’s production and they also teamed with Chris Lawrie (aka @cygnill) on parts of the album’s instrumentation and production. Space Kamp’s music is so dreamy. It’s a vibe. I love the emotions they are able to bring through their music right into a listeners headphones. Take the album’s opening track “All Praise” featuring Rob the Viking. The vocals are gorgeous and the groove seems to float in the air - like the appropriately titled album! “Better Days” has a beach vibe with a reggae rock feel. I love Space Kamp’s songs with this feel. Space Kamp takes negatives and turns them into positive. Adoo and Oskee’s vocals compliment each other so well. Both are able to sing beautiful harmonies with range across rock and hip hop. I love this song’s beat and the guitar solo shreds! One of the albums singles, “Waiting for Summer” leans heavier on the hip hop side. The hook has a more reggae influence while the verses have rap influenced flows. It’s a really cool mix and Space Kamp is able to blend the genres in their unique style. “Fast Times” weaves in a pop vibe as well and shows off the duo’s songwriting and visual storytelling. This is a fun one to throw on in your car and crank up in route to your happy place. My favorite song on the album is “AIR” which teams Space Kamp with @jesslambviola Space Kamp takes you into another universe as their lyrics, energy and vibes float like a butterfly across the sky.
