My European bucket list #52: Roller Coaster Location: Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach; Great Yarmouth, United Kingdom Mamufacturer: Erich Heidrich Model: Wooden Opened: 1932 This, now 90 year old woodie, one of the oldest in the U.K. (one of 3 designated of having historical significance) just has that charm. It looks fantastic, I don't think there's any other Coaster out there that looks like that. It's right on the beach so very picturesque and great views. The first drop looks fun, but that first bunny hill, at least in the POV's looks like it tries to launch you into low earth orbit. My European Bucket List #53: Rita Location: Alton Towers; Alton, United Kingdom Manufacturer: Intamin Model: Accelerator Opened: 2005 Ok, time for one of the most polarizing coasters on the side of the only side of the Atlantic the Titanic saw. This is already one of the more unique Accelerator coasters since there is no tophat on it, so it shows off the speed, which I find even funnier since the cars on it are clearly the same style trains that are used on the OG Accelerator, Xcellerator. Last week, Kennywood Park officially announced that Steel Curtain would remain closed for the entire 2024 season. The park explained that they have plans to continue working with the ride manufacturer, plus a team of 3rd party engineers to improve Steel Curtain's overall reliability. Yes please (bit more nuanced then that, it's about a monkey sabotaging a vineyard, but I'm still going with wine coaster) while short man does this look likenit packs a punch, especially that Launch. This Opened as Europe's fastest coaster (has been knocked down to the #3 spot) but with that speed, it stays close to the ground the whole time, it's max height is only what, 48 feet or so? My European bucket list #54: Oblivion Location: Alton Towers; Alton, United Kingdom Manufacturer: Bolliger & Mabillard Model: Dive Opened: 1998 The first B&M Dive coaster, and the definition of a one trick pony. While I hear it does that one trick (the dive into the tunnel, then right back to the station, literally) mainly due to the parks strict height limit of the tree line. I think B&M missed the mark on what their dive coasters could've been, and this showed it. A coaster that could be built lower to the ground, even parts underground (like how 2/3 of this coasters drop is under the ground) with the mist and everything creating that aura and unknown as to what happens under the ground. Day 2 was Universal Studios for our first time! We mainly wanted to experience Harry Potter so spent most of our time doing that. We also realized we are more of a Disney family cus apparently Universal is mostly roller coasters and 3d experiences which are not great for my motion sickness hubby haha and I'm too chicken to do roller coasters alone 😅 We did do a few other rides including of course the Jurassic park water one! My European bucket list #57: Oblivion The Black Hole Location: Gardaland; Castelnuovo Del Garda, Italy Manufacturer: Bolliger & Mabillard Model: Dive Opened: 2015 What looks to be an extension of Oblivion @ Alton Towers (which makes sense since both parks are owned by Merlin Entertainment) this looks like it just ups what that Coaster does, and looks like it does it pretty damn well. The color la on this, that crisp white and the orange all around look very striking. But let's go onto the experience. The lift hill and turnaround look quick leading up to that great looking first drop with all those items getting sucked into a black hole at the bottom. The Immelmann after looks sudden and quick, that's followed by an airtime hill that looks solid, but the final inversion on this, that heart-line roll looks very reminiscent of ValRavn's zero-g roll, taken so slowly that it gives great hangtime. THE BEST TERRAIN ROLLER COASTERS @silver dollar city Time Traveler is a very unusual terrain coaster. The station is located at the top of the hill, while most of the ride sits down in the valley below. The coaster starts off with one of the best airtime moments on any roller coaster, a vertical drop right out of the station. After flipping and spinning through its twisted layout, Time Travelers has a few LSM launches to keep the fun moving. The second launch is basically there to propel the train back up to the top of the hillside and onto the brake run. Not only does Time Traveler have an incredible layout that uses the full ability of the terrain, but the trains spin. So every time you ride this coaster, it feels like a brand new experience. I highly recommend you get at least one ride in the back of the train so you can feel that whip being pulled over that vertical drop. Well, that's going to wrap up my list of favorite terrain coasters. Honestly, I could keep going on as there are still plenty of other great terrain coasters to talk about. Big news coming out of West Mifflin Pennsylvania. Kennywood has announced that the problematic Steel Curtian will be closed for the entire 2024 season. I am personally disappointed on hearing this news since I'll be making my first visit to Kennywood next month. THE BEST TERRAIN ROLLER COASTERS Silver Dollar City To wrap this list up, let's move over to the sister park of Dollywood and talk about Silver Dollar City. Every roller coaster in this park (minus the kiddie coaster and dark ride) would be classified as a terrain coaster. I don’t even know if it would be possible to build an off the shelf coaster here, and if you could, that would be a disservice to the park. Silver Dollar City is tucked away into the mountain, and half of the park dips over the side. Outlaw Run is another hybrid, wooden roller coaster by Rocky Mountain Construction. This ride uses the terrain to pull off its large 162 ft first drop. The rest of the coaster travels up and down, through the mountain, finishing off with an incredible upward, double barrel roll. Similar to what I said about the Beast, once the coaster leaves the lift hill, it's barely visible until the train climbs up onto the brake run. I could only imagine that Outlaw Run would make a fantastic night ride. Unfortunately when I was at the park, it was only open until 7pm. THE BEST TERRAIN ROLLER COASTERS @Dollywood The other GREAT terrain coaster at Dollywood is, of course, Lightning Rod. This year, the park removed the launch and replaced it with a more traditional chain lift. From what I hear, it doesn’t affect the rest of the ride which is good news. Lightning Rod is a through and through terrain coaster. This hybrid roller coaster continues to wind around the mountain, performing crazy airtime maneuvers that you would expect from Rocky Mountain Construction. The finale is where this coaster goes off the chain. That quad down continues building up speed, making the each airtime hill more intense than the last one. My European Bucket List #60: The Walking Dead: The Ride Location: Thorpe Park; Chertsey, United Kingdom Manufacturer: Vekoma Model: Enigma Opened: 2018 So, this is the permanent replacement for X, which seemed to be get a horror theme around Halloween, and Thorpe Park just made it permanent. It's still the same Coaster as X, basically a family Coaster and looks like an updated wild mouse, but with themong for The Walking Dead (which, bit of a confession. I never got into) and they also decided to go with a whole roller coaster/ haunted house combo. THE BEST TERRAIN ROLLER COASTER @Dollywood Building a roller coaster in the Smoky Mountains is the perfect recipe to create a great terrain roller coaster. And that's exactly what Dollywood's done. I would classify a few of their roller coasters as terrain coasters, but only 2 of them stand out as the best. First up is: Tennessee Tornado. This is a short, but sweet looping roller coaster that dives in, around, and alongside the mountain. At the top of the first drop, you don’t even feel too high off the ground, but then you find yourself diving through the mountain and right into a massive vertical loop. A few years ago, the park cut down a few of the trees surrounding this roller coaster, so it's a little more visible, but it still hasn't changed how well this coaster has been adapted into the landscape.
