Yesterday I finished my hardest race I’ve competed in. @questforthequest50k What a day. Expected rain, but never happened. Many highs and lows, mostly lows. Miles 20-28 I battled stomach issues and threw up multiple times. What a beautiful and difficult course though. And that sunrise! I battled cutoff times all day and finished 30 minutes before the final cutoff. Schew, that was close. Thanks to @runbumraces, all of the volunteers and my wife @jessicakoon.hair for driving me home. On 5/4/24 I ran @runbumraces Grayson Highland 50 miler with my buddy Matt Tromatter. The last time I ran this race was in 2019 where @cokernut74 and I took on our first 50k mountain ultra before the 50 miler was created. We got ponies and everything. However, the weather can be dicey and this year was one of those years. There was a call for rain and 20-30 mph winds. The morning started off in a full whiteout with almost zero visibility. It took hours to lift, but it never did fully. It seems those in the back of the pack and 50k runners (started 2 hrs later) got to see the ponies sooner. I did not have the chance until 40 miles in! Prob cause they were hidden in plain sight. 🤷🏻♂️ This was my longest race since my hernia surgery back in December 2023. I’m still managing some discomfort from time to time realizing I don’t recover as quickly as before although my legs do. My goal was 11 hours and I was on par for closer to 10, but climbs at the end really took a toll. I wanted to run hard, but not so hard I was destroyed at the end. That’s what I did. I ran with some amazing runners who kept me pushing. @beccahylanderjohnson who placed 1st female and was hot on my heels, Robb Young, who I shared early miles with and @johnspanogle who kept me going those later miles up until the last aid station. No views because of the whiteout and fortunately the rain mostly held off until the last 1.5 hrs before my finish. But great character and relational building. Ended up finishing 10:46 and placing 19/127 OA, 3/33 AG (40-49), 19/98 GP. “Your body can stand almost anything. It’s your mind that you have to convince.” - so true. My first trail run and half marathon ever. 🫶🏻 It was gorgeous but challenging - both mentally and physically. Crazy what running or being in the gym will do for your mindset. The little shit doesn’t matter anymore. You learn to overlook, overcome, and push through all sorts of challenges. The last 2 miles were tough to get through. My legs have been sore before — but the insane pain after I crossed the finish line was a new experience for me. The last mile I kept saying ”keep looking down” — that hill/climb was a beast. But hey… I finished and that was my goal. Not sure what’s on the bucket list next, but I’m so glad I made my 42 year old, out of shape, introverted self join the gym and show up to the community run club - a year ago this month. Grayson Highlands 50 miler Woke up at 3:30am for the 5:30am start. Starting at 5,000 feet, with rain in the forecast, we were in a cloud. The first 45 minutes in the dark, you couldn’t see 2 feet in front of you. 6 miles in was the first aid station. Really quick stop to fill a water bottle with Tailwind before starting the next 10 mile stretch. We had a gentle climb for the next few miles before a 7-8 mile downhill section. Settled in and flew down the mountain with the eventual 3rd place female, arriving at the mile 16 aid station 35 minutes earlier than I had anticipated. Met up with my Wife, Mom, Dad, and Tinsley, who essentially became my crew, helping me move through aid stations quickly. Miles 16-28 were the toughest of the entire race. Runners were falling off right and left. Slow and steady, I picked up 6 positions through this section. I was watching my fitness payoff in front of my eyes. Huge confidence boost. Finished this section a full 45 minutes faster than I thought. 28 miles in, now the race begins. The next 4.5 miles included 2,000 feet of climbing. Slow, steady again, passing another 2 racers, holding back just a little. Making my way to the mile 40 aid station, the goal was 10 hours to get here. I arrived in 9hours 45minutes. 40 miles in, still ahead of my A goal time. 9 miles to go with the last 4 being uphill. The final 9 miles went by much easier than I had expected. I still had energy, I felt fresh, it was time go. My nutrition, pacing, hydration all paid off, the plan worked. I ended up passing 4 more racers in the final 2 mile stretch. Crossing the finish line in 12hours 16minutes, 49 miles, finishing 45th out of the 134 who started. Finished in the top 1/3 of the field, far exceeding my expectations. I have an especially janky and unsmooth (my word) gait, and with these I feel nothing but the smooth roll of fat tires over the earth below. Fantastic and dependable over miles. Meet the Team ❤️ Sean is the “Run Bum” himself who founded Run Bum Races back in 2011. The Georgia Death Race was the first race he ever directed!! In the last 16 years, he has run over 300 ultra marathons, is a USFS certified chain sawyer, Florida Trail member and volunteer trail maintainer for the Florida Trail Association and national forest service. Sean also holds the fastest known time on the 1,108 mile Florida Trail. Deanna Doane Race Director: is the second half to Run Bum and a passionate trail runner. She is a native Floridian from Jacksonville Beach and loves being in the water as much as on land. She has her own catering business called “Sweet D’s Kitchen” where she cooks plant based meals, including delicious vegan chili for many Run Bum finish lines!! She is also a USFS certified chain sawyer and volunteer trail maintainer for the Florida Trail Association and forest service! Brandy Krisher our Social Media Guru and Marketing Coordinator: is our social media expert behind the screen! She is from New Smyrna Beach, Florida and wears many hats. She is a mother, trail runner, licensed massage therapist, photographer, dog mom, and devoted wife to her husband Bradley Krisher. They have their own photography business @BBphotoadventures and love to shoot trail races, families, and portraits. The Georgia Death Race 2024 edition is in the books. It marks my fourth consecutive finish, but only the first time that I didn't feel like the course beat me. I finished in 17:08:04, good enough for 11th overall, and right at two hours faster than my fastest previous attempt. I'm looking forward to returning next year to make it 5 in a row. #flashbackfriday to two weeks ago and the adventures of #forgottenflorida 50 mile trail race with @tbarnett80 . The highs, the lows, the smiles, and so much more. It was one of the toughest things I have done so far, but it won't be the last. The greatest thing I take from difficult moments in races is the ability to overcome them. I love that I get to have those moments. Learning how to overcome roadblocks are infinitely more valuable when they are earned the hard way. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to do hard things and survive. Yes, I'll hurt during them, but the pain is temporary. Forgotten Florida 100m was one hell of a weekend. I’m still trying to compartmentalize the race and all I can think of is cold rain lol. In all seriousness, I would have not been able to cross the finish line this weekend had it not been for the people in my corner. I can’t express how thankful I am for all of you to be there in the pouring rain for 29 hours. Special thank you to my wife @bretheiser for coordinating everything behind the scenes and taking care of the kids during the race. You are my rock that I lean on when I need to keep pushing forward. @nmoser29 we did it man! We stuck together and we pushed through to the end! And to all the crew members and pacers that helped push me to the finish line. @capt_america31 although you came up short brother, having your support during training and during the race means a lot. Go get that buckle homie! @chrisstansel and @hellofromhannie for your friendship and support this weekend helping out during and post race. It’s still surreal to me that I am an ultra runner. This past weekend I took on the Forgotten Florida 50 mile. It’s amazing to see how far you can push the body and mind. I can’t wait to put in the training for the next big thing, @vermont100mile I’d say it was a success! I PR’d my marathon, 50k, and 50 mile. I came up short on my first two goals of sub 10 and sub 11, but kept pushing to finish in 11:10ish. My mantra was a combination of RD Sean, my daughter and myself. “You’re able to do this, you chose to do it!” “You can do this dada!” First thing Claire asked me as I crossed the finish line “how was your run dada?” I couldn’t help but smile and made my heart melt a little! The conditions were super tough! Low 60’s and it rained from mile 2 on and it kept raining out there..super muddy (shoe covering to knee deep thick ass mud) in parts. And super technical and rooty in others I had to keep looking down so I wouldn’t eat it on a root. Overall super fun beautiful area of Florida! Thanks to the race directors Sean and Deanna @runbumraces great aid stations, a well marked course, and a rock solid community! I can’t wait to do more of your events! All the awesome volunteers who braved a crappy weather day and kept us fed and watered! @stangle and @malivia_stangle of @runfluent_fulwise for getting me prepared to take on these large goals! 50 miles finished. I won't lie to you and say we ran every mile but we surely let everything we had in the swamps this time. The last 10 miles were killing me after mile 39 consisted of the thicked soul sucking mud. My heart rate being so high for the whole time had me feeling my body was shutting down but @jessikaapoppe kept me moving despite me sucking air, never had chest pains that intense. She's truly my motivation and key to staying strong. All the runners we have talked to said it was the worst conditions for this race. 50 mis of constant raining and cold temps for 11+hrs. Shootout to you crazy 100mi racers @notdr0z you crazy. It always surprises me that I get so many runners hype about my @deliberatelifedesigns , I always get crazy about the sandals lifestyle. I could talk all day about the benefits for my running style but everyone needs a pair, it will change your life @nashville_pack also making the best running vest IMO ever. The Tiempo just works and I need to get a new one after the ultras it's survived. 60 miles in! He picked up Jason at mile 58 and he's feeling pretty good. I'll say it every time, these pacers hit a whole new level of friendship, Jason will run over 40 miles with Matt! No end in sight for the rain, but trails are about to get a bit nicer (more like dirt road and less like Florida swamp) so he's excited about that. Welp...he's at it again!! @mkordie took off at 7am on the Forgotten Florida 100 mile run! He ran the 50 last year on a whim and loved it, so he's running the full course this year. His goal is to finish in under 24 hours and of course it started raining about 2 hours in (because the universe doesn't want me to crew races anymore 😂). Please send him all the good juju and save a little for grampa who will be keeping our sweet sis for 36 hours by himself!
