#MedalMonday # #MotivationMonday from my 82nd lifetime marathon at the Big Sur International Marathon 04/28/24 just 13 days after the Boston Marathon so I got an extra medal for the Boston2BigSur Challenge! Not gonna lie, it was pretty brutal for me out there but the beautiful scenery helped take my mind off of how challenging this super hilly course was less than 2 weeks after Boston! I dug deep to get'er done & properly represent the Hyland's Powered brand that I was sporting on my singlet. My legs felt so bad but even though I didn't have any cramping I took an entire packet of the Hyland’s Leg Cramps tablets a few times during the latter part of the race & it actually helped dull my discomfort quite a bit so I could grind it out to the finish! Temos um #medalmonday grandão hoje! A quinquagésima maratona chegou! Parece que foi ontem que concluí a minha primeira maratona, mas já se passaram 10 anos desde então. A #nb42k não era meu alvo; ainda estava de ressaca do esforço feito há três semanas em SP, quando anotei minha melhor maratona (até então 🫢), mas larguei próximo do pacer de 3h15 para ver até onde aguentaria. Fui fazendo força e aguentando o ritmo até quase metade da prova, quando comecei a sentir que forcei demais. Na segunda metade, um tombo próximo do km28 me fez alguns ralados leves, mas nada que pudesse me tirar da prova. Segui fazendo força e comecei a calcular qual o ritmo que teria que sustentar para bater novamente meu RP, mesmo sabendo que não era a meta. Mas se havia a possibilidade, por que não tentar? Fiz muita força nos últimos 8km para não deixar o ritmo cair, para não ceder à dor e à vontade de andar, e o esforço foi recompensado com um novo recorde pessoal, baixando em 4 minutos a marca anterior, de 3 semanas atrás em SP. Foi minha 4ª vez em Porto Alegre, e em todas as vezes que estive nesse lugar bati meu RP. 100% de aproveitamento nessa cidade! Prova extremamente bem organizada pela @run_sports, com ótima estrutura e atrações durante o percurso, que contava também com alguns cotovelos e “vai e volta”, mas muito agradável e plano. E São Pedro foi muito parceiro segurando a chuva e mandando um tempo firme e agradável (pela primeira vez corri aqui sem passar frio). Muito obrigado ao @betocianfarani por toda a orientação nos treinos, pela paciência e habilidade em mudar os planos quando invento de mexer no calendário de provas! E muito obrigado à @carol.horcajonutri pelos conselhos e orientação nutricional! Got marathon #71 done 13 days after Boston. My second Boston2Eugene challenge is in the books, my first was in 2013 when I ran with my son, Cory. We had hoped to do Eugene together today too, but Cory has a trial tomorrow that pulled him out of town. Fun to finish in the remodeled Hayward Field (although the original Hayward Field was better, in my opinion). The medals were made with reclaimed wood from the original historic Hayward Field. I dedicated this marathon to my running friend Patty who recently contracted Guillain-Barré Syndrome. She can't breathe on her own (has a trach), can't talk, can't move her arms, and is in a long term acute rehab hospital. I pray she will recover fully and be able to run again. 🙏🙏 I had many meaningful connections with runners who liked the verse on my shirt “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. I gave Hyland’s Leg Cramps and ArniSport tabs out to many runners. One grateful runner came up to me afterward and said the leg cramps tabs saved his race and gave him immediate relief. I fell at mile 13.5, but not as hard as some of my falls lately. Picking myself up and finishing as strong as possible is becoming a regular thing. Just finished the Madrid Marathon 2024! It's been 5 years since I last ran this marathon, and returning to one of my favorite cities for my annual birthday marathon feels amazing! It wasn't ideal - I was feeling under the weather for a few days before the event, and the result is a little less good than the previous Marathon I participated in. And yet - I had a blast, and I'm pleased with how it went. Always love being back in Europe❤️

Marathon training can really make your schedule tight. We are all busy. In a nutshell though, we make time for what we want to make time for. It’s the small daily actions that turn into the bigger picture of what our life is. 2 Tips for finding time for marathon training! 1. Do a time assessment - It doesn't have to be intense where you make an account for every minute of your day (although that can really help!) Even people with highly flexible jobs tend to have some routine that they follow. Once you assess how you are spending your time pinpoint the times throughout the day that seem to be when you waste time (usually by watching TV, surfing the web, the time after work but before dinner, Now you need to be conscious about eliminating these. Yes, we all need mental and physical breaks but as a society we tend to chronically take breaks and then talk about how busy we are. There is so much power in 5 minutes. Seeing where you are wasting your time and overindulging shows you where you can actually squeeze in that hour to run (half hour run + half hour for cooling down and taking a shower). 2. Write down your goals and be specific Don't just say, "I want to run a marathon" but say WHY you want to run it . For example: "I want to run a marathon because in doing so I will prove to myself that I can live a healthy lifestyle that includes a regular routine of exercise while challenging myself to accomplish something that I know will only make me happier and more confident." It needs to be powerful enough so that when you read it you will say, "YES! This is why I am making time to run. Today was one of those runs that killed me. We all have those days where it is just hard from the start to the finish. I ran 11 miles and decided I’d walk the last 1 (=12 total) as a special treat. 3 TIPS PARA LOS TIEMPOS DE PASO EN MARATÓN⌚️ Para cualquier carrera de asfalto y, sobre todo, en el maratón has de tener clarísimo los tiempos objetivos pero eso si, sin volverte loco mirando el reloj cada 2x3 Para ello te recomiendo: 1) Controlar el paso de los dos primeros kilómetros para ajustarte bien al ritmo objetivo previsto del maratón. El primer kilómetro siempre suele ser muy rapido o, algunas veces, algo lento si hay una montonera según el cajón de salida y tipo de maratón 2) Regular segun el perfil de la carrera. No es lo mismo mantener un ritmo objetivo de carrera en plano, que en un tramo de subida o de bajada. No te vuelvas loco queriendo mantener el ritmo en subida o, por el contrario, querer recuperar todo lo “perdido” en la siguiente bajada 3) Dividir la carrera en tramos. Te recomiendo hacerlo de 5kms en 5kms, así te será más fácil controlar y comparar los tiempos ⏱️. WORLD MARATHON MAJORS, with Lauren Dreiling 🏅 🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅 VJ: What was tougher, training for the run or raising charity funds? - @lkdreiling: Both aspects are challenging, but I think just training for and completing a marathon is difficult! What I loved about fundraising for charity was the direct connection to my training. Just like the marathon training, fundraising is a gradual build. I was more cognizant to share my training milestones. - VJ: What race was the toughest, and which race was the most beautiful? - @lkdreiling: This may be a bit controversial, but I think New York was the toughest! There is elevation gain and descent the entire course due to the bridges, so you never have much reprieve. I will note, I was MUCH better strength trained for Boston than I was when I ran New York; we shall see if this opinion changes when I run New York again this fall! - Most beautiful course of the World Marathon Majors? That may be like asking to choose your favorite child! Chicago was my first marathon EVER and I fell in love…. Being able to see Lake Michigan in the distance is pretty spectacular. Chicago—easiest start line to get to! - New York—the most iconic start line: Cannon send off for each wave of runners, Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” blasting, and running up and over the Verrazano Bridge. WOW. - Berlin, in my opinion, was the most underrated major… I had the race of my life there! Tokyo—the nicest volunteers and the best post-race warming attire. I can’t say enough nice things about the Tokyo volunteers! Every single volunteer had the biggest smile… and beyond excited to be there. Boston is the… most sought-after marathon in the world and for good reason! I am certain all of the majors make a grand conclusion for a 6-star journey, but for me, it HAD to be Boston as the finale.
