Last Saturday, I got in some good miles at Mt. Mitchell. The mountains are much different than Oregon, but I am glad that I was able to get in some elevation. I know Mitchell is the highest elevation east of the Mississippi, but I forget how much the incline is on the way up. It was good to see some snow and experience multiple seasons in one day. Not to mention going off the trail and rushing to beat the sun. Mitchell last year. We met a man in his 70s, “Bob,” out on the trail doing some trail maintenance and he told us how he’s been coming out to these woods basically his whole life. Whilst walking up close to the summit this little fella just jumped right in front of me. With mum not to far behind, I popped a squat not to annoy her anymore than I had to. The little one came up & had a sniff before just chilling about a metre away. Yesterday without looking properly I said this was rock wallaby, but having a closer look it’s a Pademelon. Being first up the track this moment lasted about twenty minutes, enough time to grab a few pics & soak up the moment. The little one joined mum again & away they went. These posts are so much easier when things go well, however if I’m gonna post about every great race I have, then I should own up to my failures as well. After missing last year’s @tanawha_adventures Mt Mitchell Heartbreaker 50 Mile I had been looking forward to this race for over a year. I started out running with Tim for the first few minutes until we missed the first time of the race. Upon getting back on course we found ourselves about 20 back or so. We quickly carved our way through the field but I got caught in the crowd and Tim took off never to be seen again. Upon hitting the gravel road I took off in second place trying to separate myself from the crowd but by time I reached the first climb a small group had reeled me in. Quickly into the climb 3 runners passed me, then another, and another and on and on. About halfway up I was clinging on to tenth place when Boone caught me and we ran together for a little while, then on a rock outcropping I slipped and fell hard on my left shin and my right calf seized up instantly. I was able to keep going but was starting to have my doubts. Boone dropped me and by time I hit the parkway (2nd photo) I was in 18th place and not feeling great. I started to think about how the RD said we had the option to drop to the 55K at the mile 14 aid station, and even though I was only 10 miles in, I couldn’t get that thought out of my head. Negative thoughts can spread like a disease when you’re in a low point and you forget how much time you have to pull out of your funk. I was burning up on the climb and couldn’t catch my breath. The thought of another 4 mile climb up to Mitchell wasn’t appealing. I had to make the call at the top of the climb if I wanted to keep Laurie from driving all the way to Mt Mitchell since I wouldn’t have service at the bottom. I dropped down and essentially jogged it in until I started feeling better around mile 25. Later when seeing the results I realized if I had continued those extra 13 miles in 3 hours I could’ve made the podium. I could’ve turned my race around but I took the easy way out. So I did a thing on Saturday… The Mitchell Vertical Mile! This is one of those ideas that has been talked about a lot but never done on record by anyone prior. Being Mt. Mitchell (6,684') is the highest peak in the Eastern US, one would think it fairly easy to plan out but that is just not so. Getting a low enough start point (<1404') has been the biggest challenge; I had to start in Old Fort to get a low enough elevation to get the full net mile in elevation gain (5280'). I had been planning this out for over a year. 19.1 miles, 7,700' in total elevation gain, and a slow 7 hrs 54 mins (last 2 miles were mostly snow and ice so I slowed waaay down). My chosen route (this was literally number 5 out of 8 different variations I mapped out): start point at the confluence of Curtis Creek and Hwy 70 in Old Fort (1398'), up Curtis Creek Rd to the campground, Snooks Nose Trail up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, then the Green Knob Trail up past the tower and down to the Black Mountain Campground where I then took the Mt. Mitchell Trail (MST) up to the summit. I was pretty gassed during the last section, accentuated by my frustration of not being able to move at my normal pace through the snow/ice. It was a long day, but a good day! This has been submitted as an official route on the #FKT site so more of you can take the challenge on and destroy my slow pace by hours, lol.
