Last night was in Poitiers before setting to continue the Via Turonensis. Very interesting to revisit the church which houses the tomb of St Hilary of Poitiers and to notice some details I missed last time. In the first picture the Christchild holds a set of keys; locals believe when the English besieged the city a traitor was all set to hand over the keys to the city but by a miracle they were not in their usual hiding place in the mayor's bedchamber. For good measure the Virgin herself appeared on the city walls along with St Hilary and other local girl Saint Radegonde to foil the dasterdly English plot. Of course we all know Poitiers is rightfully English being the domain of Elaenor of Aquitaine (but we let the French look after it for us for now) so how could the Virgin have got it so wrong this time? 😀 Last picture is of the remnants of the old romanesque church with splendid poylchrome decoration. Most of it was demolished by those rascal revolutionaires. #poitiers # #sainthilaryofpoitiers #sainthilairedepoitiers

Quote: Let me, in short, adore You our Father, and Your Son together with You; let me win the favor of Your Holy Spirit, Who is from You, through Your Only-begotten. For I have a convincing Witness to my faith, Who says, “Father, all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine” (John 17:10), even my Lord Jesus Christ, abiding in You, and from You, and with You, forever God: Who is blessed for ever and ever. Amen. ~De Trinitate 12.57 Reflection: Born into a wealthy pagan family in Poitiers, France, Hilary was well educated in the classics. As he looked into his own soul, however, he knew that he did not exist for the sole purpose of seeking pleasure, enjoying leisure, obtaining wealth, or merely satisfying his fleshly desires. Hilary reasoned that the human soul did not exist simply to die. Instead, it must exist for something more, something eternal, something glorious. When his pagan culture did not suffice and philosophy fell short, Hilary finally found what he was searching for when he stumbled upon the Scriptures. Prayer: Saint Hilary, your heart was restless as a pagan, but you turned that restlessness into a search for the Truth. Upon finding it, you dove in head-first, entering deeper and deeper into the great mystery of the Trinity. Please pray for me, that I will also be diligent and resolute in my determination to discover the great mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. As I grow in faith, may I also share in your zeal to model the faith to others. Saint Hilary, pray for me. January 13 | Feast day of Saint Hilary of Poitiers, Bishop & Doctor of the Church. đŸŒč The story of Saint Hilary tells us that we, humans - our souls, exist for something more than just to fulfill earthly and fleshy desires, but more to an eternal and glorious one which is through God and in God. He clearly and profoundly reminded us that this world is not for us to live forever but only for a momentary, for our souls can never truly rest well and be fulfilled until we are back home with Him. An eternal life in Heaven with God is our true and only life, not here on earth. And so we must use our time well to prepare ourselves - our hearts and souls, just as stated in the Bible (Matthew 26:41): “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”, so that we may finally be worthy enough to receive Him, to stand before Him, and to finally live with Him eternally in Heaven. We came from Him, we all belong to Him, and we will too, be finally back to live eternally at His home prepared for us. What do you like about Saint Hilary? St. Hilary of Poitiers Doctor of the Church 315-368 Feast day: January 13 (New), January 14 (Trad) Patronage: Against rheumatism, snake bites, mothers, awkward children, the sick, Vervio, Italy, LaRochelle, France Saint Hilary was born into a wealthy, pagan family, and educated in philosophy and rhetoric. He believed people should rise above their desires and live a life of virtue. This leads him to search for truth, where he “read” himself into the faith through the Gospels. There he found the confirmation of the one true God and our purpose of life, eternity. He was elected Bishop after his conversion, only soon to be exiled by the Arians. This gave him time to research and write on the Trinity and the nature of God, refuting the Arian Heresy. He was the first to compose hymns based on Scripture. “Wages cannot be considered as a gift, because they are due to work, but God has given free grace to all people by justification of faith.” - Hilary (310-367), Bishop of Poitiers, Teacher of the Faith Hilary was born in the Roman city of Poitiers, in Gaul (now France). His family was pagan and he was well-educated in pagan schools. As an adult, he encountered the Old and New Testament Scriptures and resolved to convert to Christianity. Hilary, his wife, and his child were all baptized. Due to his intelligence and strong character, Hilary was well-respected by local Christians and was made bishop in 350. This was a complex and critical moment in the history of the church. 25 years before, the Council of Nicaea had carefully defined the doctrine of the Trinity in the Nicene Creed. In the years following, powerful teachers and politicians had sought to undermine Nicene Christianity and many in the Roman power elite had sought to suppress those loyal to the Nicene Creed. Hilary spoke out against these persecutions and defended the Trinitarian theology of the Nicene Creed. Hilary was sent into exile many times for his beliefs but he refused to compromise with the false doctrine of the authorities. Hilary is now recognized as one of the most critical defenders of Nicene Christianity in Western Europe, and placed among the greatest of the Church Fathers of the 4th century. O God, our heavenly Father, you raised up your faithful servant Hilary of Poitiers to be a Bishop and pastor in your Church and to feed your flock: Give abundantly to all pastors the gifts of your Holy Spirit, that they may minister in your household as true servants of Christ and stewards of your divine mysteries; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. “Our Church Speaks” prints and calendars available at www.ourchurchspeaks.com. Blessed Memorial of St. Hilary of Poitiers! "May I serve you by making you known", from the treatise on the Trinity by St. Hilary: I am well aware, almighty God and Father, that in my life I owe you a most particular duty. It is to make my every thought and word speak of you. In fact, you have conferred on me this gift of speech, and it can yield no greater return than to be at your service. It is for making you known as Father, the Father of the only-begotten God, and preaching this to the world that knows you not and to the heretics who refuse to believe in you. Yes, in our poverty we will pray for our needs. We will study the sayings of your prophets and apostles with unflagging attention, and knock for admittance wherever the gift of understanding is safely kept. But yours it is, Lord, to grant our petitions, to be present when we seek you and to open when we knock. So we trust in you to inspire the beginnings of this ambitious venture, to strengthen its progress, and to call us into a partnership in the spirit with the prophets and the apostles. To that end, may we grasp precisely what they meant to say, taking each word in its real and authentic sense. For we are about to say what they already have declared as part of the mystery of revelation: that you are the eternal God, the Father of the eternal, only-begotten God; that you are one and not born from another; and that the Lord Jesus is also one, born of you from all eternity. We must not proclaim a change in truth regarding the number of gods. We must not deny that he is begotten of you who are the one God; nor must we assert that he is other than the true God, born of you who are truly God the Father. Impart to us, then, the meaning of the words of Scripture and the light to understand it, with reverence for the doctrine and confidence in its truth. Grant that we may express what we believe. Through the prophets and apostles we know about you, the one God the Father, and the one Lord Jesus Christ. May we have the grace, in the face of heretics who deny you, to honour you as God, who is not alone, and to proclaim this as truth. St. Hilary of Poitiers, pray for us!

Saint Hilary of Poitiers, ora pro nobis!! + Born to wealthy polytheistic, pagan nobility, Hilary’s early life was uneventful as he married, had children (including Saint Abra), and studied on his own. Through his studies he came to believe in salvation through good works, then monotheism. As he studied the Bible for the first time, he literally read himself into the faith, and was converted by the end of the New Testament. + Hilary lived the faith so well he was made bishop of Poitiers, France from 353 to 368. Hilary opposed the emperor’s attempt to run Church matters, and was exiled; he used the time to write works explaining the faith. His teaching and writings converted many, including Saint Florence of Poitiers, and in an attempt to reduce his notoriety he was returned to the small town of Poitiers where his enemies hoped he would fade into obscurity. His writings continued to convert pagans. + He introduced Eastern theology to the Western Church, fought Arianism with the help of Saint Viventius, and was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1851. + —CatholicSaints. info

After studying writings from the Old and New Testaments, Hilary converted from Neo-Platonism to Christianity with his wife and daughter (his daughter would go on to be known as St. Abra). Saint of the Day🕊 Saint Hilary of Poitiers🙏 This staunch defender of the divinity of Christ was a gentle and courteous man, devoted to writing some of the greatest theology on the Trinity, and was like his Master in being labeled a “disturber of the peace.” In a very troubled period in the Church, his holiness was lived out in both scholarship and controversy. He was bishop of Poitiers in France. Raised a pagan, he was converted to Christianity when he met his God of nature in the Scriptures. His wife was still living when he was chosen, against his will, to be the bishop of Poitiers in France. He was soon taken up with battling what became the scourge of the fourth century, Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. St. Hilary of Poitiers was one of the great champions of the Catholic belief in the divinity of Christ. By his preaching, his treatise on the Trinity, his part in the Councils, his daring opposition to the Emperor Constantius, he showed himself a courageous apostle of the truth. He could not tolerate that the specious plea of safeguarding peace and unity should be allowed to dim the light of Gospel teaching. St. Pius IX proclaimed him a doctor of the Church. The heresy spread rapidly. Saint Jerome said “The world groaned and marveled to find that it was Arian.” When Emperor Constantius ordered all the bishops of the West to sign a condemnation of Athanasius, the great defender of the faith in the East, Hilary refused and was banished from France to far off Phrygia. Eventually he was called the “Athanasius of the West.” Saint Hilary of Poitiers, pray for us! www.medjugorjenow.com #medjugorjenow #Saintoftheday #sainthilaryofpoitiers #doctorofthechurch #sainthilaryofpoitiersprayforus #Bishop #holyspirit #romancatholic #faith #confession #peace #hope #spiritualrenewal #HolyMass #romancatholicchurch #Amen

The Church of St. Hilary the Great in Poitiers, France📍😍 The Church of St. Hilary the Great in Poitiers is the primary namesake church of the city’s most famous Christian resident. Although not constructed until the 11th century, it was home to the relic of St. Hilary from the Middle Ages through the French Revolution. The Church became a major pilgrimage stopping point thanks to its proximity to the pilgrimage road that ran to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Unfortunately, this medieval structure was the target of violence several times during its history. In the 16th century it was assaulted by Hugenots. It is believed that Hilary’s corpse was taken from the church at this time and destroyed. While Hilary is no longer interred here, the tradition of his tomb being on the site, along with the countless pilgrims who have visited the place over the centuries, keeps it one of the more popular Catholic shrines in central France. – (Cont)

St. Hilary of Poitiers, a fourth-century Doctor of the Church, brilliantly defended both the belief in Christ's humanity and His placement within the Holy Trinity during a period of great turmoil in the Church. While he steadfastly defending these essential elements of the Catholic faith, he also sought to explain and clarify these beliefs with great charity and kindness, despite even being exiled at one point. “He by Whom man was made had nothing to gain by becoming Man; it was our gain that God was incarnate and dwelt among us, making all flesh His home by taking upon Him the flesh of One. We were raised because He was lowered; shame to Him was glory to us. He, being God, made flesh His residence, and we in return are lifted anew from the flesh to God.” St. Hilary of Poitiers, pray for us and help us imitate your example of defending truth while also showing love!

Saint Hilary of Poitiers was born in 315 in Poitiers, Gaul. Saint Hilary is a doctor of the church, who as bishop of Poitiers was a champion against Arianism and was the first Latin writer to introduce Greek doctrine to Western Christendom. Saint Hilary was a convert from Neoplatonism. Hilary was elected bishop of Poitiers in 353. He was exiled (356–360) to Phrygia by the Roman emperor Constantius II for not condemning the leading opponent of Arianism, St. Athanasius the Great, at the Council of BĂ©ziers in 356. While in Phrygia, he wrote De trinitate (The Trinity), the first work in Latin to deal with the issues of the Trinitarian controversies. In De synodis “Concerning the Synods” he explained the history of the Arian controversy and directed the faithful in the East to rally against those who believed the Son was unlike the Father. His appeals to Constantius were unsuccessful, and he was expelled from the East. Returning to Poitiers, he spent his last years combatting Arianism in Gaul and writing his commentary on the Psalms and Tractatus mysteriorum on typology. His reaffirmation of orthodoxy, almost alone in Gaul, earned him the title of the Athanasius of the West. Probably the earliest hymnist, he composed a book of lyrics . He was declared a doctor of the church in 1851 by Pope Pius IX. “The perfection of learning is to know God in such a way that, though you realize he is knowable, yet you know him as indescribable.” – St. Hilary of Poitiers (c.310-367), Doctor of the Church St. Hilary was born in Poitiers, Gaul (modern-day France), where he was highly educated in Greek. After studying writings from the Old and New Testaments, Hilary converted from Neo-Platonism to Christianity with his wife and daughter (his daughter would go on to be known as St. Abra). In time, Hilary was so respected by the people that he was unanimously elected as the Bishop of Poitiers. He was a strong defender against Arianism, known as the “Hammer of the Arians” and the “Athanasius of the West.” He is the patron saint of lawyers. Eventually he was called the “Athanasius of the West.” Saint Hilary of Poitiers, pray for us! www.medjugorjenow.com #medjugorjenow #feastday #saint #Saintoftheday #sainthilaryofpoitiers #sainthilaryofpoitiersprayforus #doctorofthechurch #Bishop #holyspirit #romancatholic #faith #confession #peace #hope #spiritualrenewal #HolyMass #romancatholicchurch #protection #church #heprotectsyou #Helovesyou #TrustHim #happiness #startyourdaywithjesus #startyourdaywithprayer #JesusLovesMe #Amen

In the years following, powerful teachers and politicians had sought to undermine the conclusions of Nicaea and many in the Roman power elite had sought to suppress those loyal to the Nicene Creed. Saint Hilary was a native of Poitiers in Aquitaine. Born and educated a pagan, it was not until near middle age that he embraced Christianity, moved to that step primarily by the idea of God presented to him in the Holy Scriptures. He soon converted his wife and daughter, and separated himself rigidly from all non-Catholic company, fearing the influence of error, rampant in a number of false philosophies and heresies, for himself and his family. He entered Holy Orders with the consent of his very virtuous wife, and separated from his family as was required of the clergy. He later wrote a very famous letter to his dearly-loved daughter, encouraging her to adopt a consecrated life. She followed this counsel and died, still young, a holy death. In 353 Saint Hilary was chosen bishop of his native city. Arianism, under the protection of the Emperor Constantius, was then at the heights of its exaltation, and Saint Hilary found himself called upon to support the orthodox cause in several Gallic councils, in which Arian bishops formed an overwhelming majority. He was in consequence accused to the emperor, who banished him to Phrygia. He spent his more than three years of exile in composing his great works on the Trinity. In 359 he attended the Council of Seleucia, in which Arians, semi-Arians, and Catholics contended for the mastery. He never ceased his combat against the errors of the enemies of the Divinity of Christ. With the deputies of the council he went to Constantinople, and there so dismayed the heads of the Arian party that they prevailed upon the emperor to let him return to Gaul. He traversed Gaul, Italy and Illyria, preaching wherever he went, disconcerting the heretics and procuring the triumph of orthodoxy. He wrote a famous treatise on the Synods. After some eight years of missionary travel he returned to Poitiers, where he died in peace in 368. For me this was the most striking church of the day. The coloured geometrical designsmay lack the intensity of Notre-Dame-la-Grande but the imposing size of the building is quite jaw-dropping as you enter through the west door directly into the nave. Saint Hilary apparently spent s fee years in exile in present day Turkey. #Ă©glisesainthilairelegrand #sainthilaryofpoitiers #poitiers #chemindecompostelle #voiedetours #viaturonensis

Today’s saint was born a pagan, to pagans, in a pagan city. But his broad and deep education brought him into contact with Holy Scripture, where he found the truth he did not know he was seeking. He became a Catholic through reading. He was to then spend his adult life defending Catholic truth with his pen. The convert converted others and preserved the orthodoxy of the Nicene Creed against the Arian heresy. Saint Athanasius called St. Hilary a “trumpet” of orthodoxy against theological error. Blessed Feast of St Hilary of Poitiers. The only way to truly grasp the magnitude of St Hilary’s feats is to try and imagine what life was like in his era. The first 3 centuries after the death and resurrection of Christ, was littered with Christian persecution and martyrdom. If you so much as breathed the message or worship of Christ, you were tortured, imprisoned, crucified and, during Nero’s abominable reign, you were torched alive in the streets, where everyone can watch. Despite that unimaginable and horrific backdrop, one man dared to defy the decree of the time by defending the divinity of Christ through preaching and deed. Although St Hilary (310-367) lived during the more passive Constantine rulership, it was still a precarious period in history due to the uprising of the heresy of Arianism from, believe it or not, within the church. Arianism was a movement denying the divinity of Christ, maintaining that He was created by the Father and therefore not divine or consubstantial with the father. Even emperors jumped on the bandwagon and exiled anyone who opposed Arianism. St Hilary, however stood tall. After being exiled for 4 years, St Hilary returned to Poitier where his writings and persuasive defence of the truth saw him overthrow the plight of Arianism. His famous quote and call to action still resonates in todays society - “Now it is time to speak. The time for silence is past”. A lesson for all who cower in silence and fear. St Hilary, pray for us đŸ™đŸ’™âœïž #pray #bible #jesus #sainthilaryofpoitiers

#Portraitsofsaints #Feastday #Saintquote #Saintquotes #Saintoftheday #prayforus #StHilaryofPoitiers #SaintHilaryofPoitiers
