It's not all albatrosses and penguins! New Zealand's subantarctic is also home to a few cracking shag species, each endemic to their island. These Campbell Island shags breed only there - and the Auckland and Bounty islands each have their own endemic shags. The eradication of these species was to benefit other birds - seabirds like black petrels, and forest birds. Ōi (grey faced petrels) are remarkably resilient birds. They can persist on rat infested islands, and there are even relict populations on the mainland - but their chicks are very vulnerable to being eaten by rats, stoats, and ferrets. After hatching, they sit in the burrow alone while their parents feed, and their only defence is to spit oil at intruders - but it not enough to stop a hungry mammal. There are community groups around northern Aotearoa working to protect these birds and help them breed successfully in the mainland like @karioiproject . There are always setbacks, and even a predator proof fence isn’t a permanent solution. And we certainly have some stunners - like the Spotted shag. Decked out in breeding colours they have a mane of white filoplumes, a double black mohawk, and gorgeous turquoise eye-rings. So who got my #1 vote? The light-mantled albatross, one of Aotearoa's lesser known amazing birds. They're one of our roughly 12 albatross species (yeah, 12! we are the world's seabird hotspot, with more species than anywhere else on earth). Light-mantled albatross breed on our subantarctic islands, and forage as far south as the Antarctic pack-ice. These birds go far - you can see them at sea off Northland when they're not breeding.
