Talitropsis megatibia is one of Aotearoa's most formidable-looking cave wētā species. These gorgeous insects are endemic to the Rēkohu / Chatham Island Archipelago. Unlike their mainland relatives, T. megatibia sport laterally-expanded hind tibiae. These impressive legs presumably protect the cave wētā from predators, while they are wedged inside narrow tree hollows. When these arboreal cave wētā are disturbed at night, they suddenly launch themselves through the air (rather than performing any kind of threat display) and escape amongst the leaf litter of the forest floor. T. megatibia were recently considered a distinct species from T. crassicrurus (which occupies the main Chatham Island, Rēkohu) due to their XL tibiae. However, it seems more likely that T. megatibia is a junior synonym of T. crassicrurus (owing to their close genetic affinities and biogeographic distribution) and that enlarged hind legs is simply an interesting quirk of their island lifestyle/biogeographic phenomena. Megatibs undoubtedly have the most striking hind legs of any cave wētā species in New Zealand and I suspect they converged in morphology with some of our anostostomatids (e.g. tree wētā). Cute little bird, right? 😊Say hello to Karure or Chatham Island Black Robin, endemic to New Zealand (current populations are found in Mangere and South East islands). These birds are truly a conservation success story! 🎉 By early 1900s, their populations were almost wiped out by the introduction of predators like rats and cats. There were only 5 black robins left in the world in 1980 😳! A dedicated New Zealand wildlife service staff worked tirelessly to save this species from extinction, using the last breeding pair and a foster species. By 2021, their population was up to 300 birds. 👏These birds are still critically endangered as their introduced predators still exist on the islands. [CHATHAM ISLAND SCENE]. Anonymous people - two young girls (one hatless) and a well dressed man - feature in this Sunday scene, possibly at Lake Huro, near Te One on Chatham Island. Dating from circa 1910-15, this comes from a quarter plate collection purchased at auction over 30 years ago. Although small plate cameras could be hand-held, the cost of each plate still made the use of a tripod more sensible, particularly in overcast weather (as here; the island gets the lowest annual sunshine count for any inhabited place in NZ). The residual tree life serves as a metaphor for the colonial frontier, while elsewhere in NZ swampy margins were drained for their inherent fertility. * * * #chathamisland #chathamislands #quarterplate #lakehuro #teone #rekohu
