Sunrise swim at #Shellness, grateful to warm our bodies around a little fire and watch the sun burn through and radiate a little warmth. The water was cold but not icy, air temp a balmy 15 degrees with little wind. All we could hear was the lapping of waves on the shingly, aptly named beach and the cries of gulls. Behind us the songs of marsh birds waking and busying themselves.
'Pegwell Bay, Kent – a Recollection of October 5th 1858' 🐚 This beautiful oil painting by Scottish artist William Dyce caught our eye on a visit to @tatebritainlondon earlier this year. In beautiful detail, the artist recalls a cold October day spent at the beach with his family. Fossil and shell collecting were popular pastimes in Victorian England and the arrival of the railway from London to Ramsgate in 1846 had opened up this stretch of east Kent coast to tourists. 🐚 The vast majority of the 4.6 million shells which make up the mosaics in the Shell Grotto are native British varieties and the most frequently used – mussels, cockles, whelks, limpets, scallops and oysters – can be found locally. The breakwater acts as a marker a guide pointing north east out to wider waters, to freedom hope expectations beyond the bounds of the Thames Estuary beyond the confines of the UK it’s stifling atmosphere, the narrowing view, you know what I’m talking about. A couple of days ago with friends on the Isle of Sheppey imagining that we might have been on the Camargue with wild horses. For Easter morning I woke up at 6:45am, I sat on the beach eating an egg and bacon sarnie, I made two large scale drawings (shaped like eggs), dipped my toes in the sea and collected whelk egg cases from along the coastline.
