On a Friday afternoon in a western suburb of Omaha, Nebraska, Roger Slatten's life took a drastic turn when he received a phone call just after leaving for work. His friend urgently informed him of a tornado spotted near his home in an Elkhorn neighborhood, prompting Roger to seek safety immediately. The tornado that struck the Slatten home was part of a series of destructive storms that ravaged the Plains from Thursday to Sunday. While Roger, his brother, and their dogs managed to survive, the devastation was widespread. Tragically, the severe weather claimed the lives of at least five individuals in Oklahoma and Iowa. Recalling the terrifying experience, Roger described how he and his brother attempted to seek refuge but found themselves in a life-threatening situation as their house was lifted off its foundation. Despite the chaos, Roger miraculously stayed conscious as he was thrown through the air, enduring a barrage of debris before landing and being trapped under rubble. The once-standing house was obliterated, leaving only the basement foundation intact. The brothers lost most of their possessions in the disaster, with the very basement they would have sought shelter in collapsing and being crushed by debris from a neighboring yard. The resilience and survival of the Slatten family in the face of such devastation serve as a testament to the unpredictable and destructive power of natural disasters.
