Prepare to visit one of Mulu's highlights, the largest cave passage by volume, the iconic DEER CAVE: 1. Time your flight so that you can catch the last tour at 2.30pm on your arrival day! 2. Forest immersion with rest shelters and many interesting flora and fauna on the way - your guide will lead you on a fairly flat and shaded almost 3km walk to the bat observatory. (baby strollers can go as far as the bat observatory). 2. Take some cash to rehidrate with 100 Plus or get a postcard for mom - your snailmail can be posted inside this world heritage area 3. After the brief pit stop(toilets and kiosk) at the bat observatory you can enjoy the cave tour where you will see one of the most striking cave features ever! (hint: our profile pic) 4. After the cave tour, you will need patience to wait for the bat exodus! You have by now smelt the large colony of over 3 million bats and we sincerely hope that you will be lucky to see them exiting the cave for their nightly feed. (never guaranteed) 5. It will be dusk or dark on your return, pathways are lit, but a torch will be helpful. If it rains in the evening (which it often does) have a rainponcho or hat at hand, take it slow on the plankwalk and enjoy the forest symphony. 6. In recent years, the landscape of show cave tours has undergone significant changes. Many caves now offer self-guided tours, a trend driven by several factors: COVID-19 restrictions: Social distancing mandates made group tours impossible, prompting creative solutions; protection regulations: In some caves, guides' experience limited exposure due to air quality concerns; challenges: Finding enough guides, especially during peak seasons, can be difficult. These reasons alone demonstrate the potential of self-guided tours as a viable option for many show caves. Part 2: Possibilities and Implementation – Erdmann Cave in Hasel In 2022, Cave Lighting was tasked with developing a system for unguided exploration at the Erdmann Cave in Hasel, Germany. Two years prior, we had successfully completed the cave's initial illumination project. SHOW CAVES arround the world! Gombasecka Jeskyna. Gombasek Cave or Gombasecká jaskyňa (in Slovak) and Gombaszögi-barlang (in Hungarian) is a karst cave in the Slovak Karst, Slovakia. It is named after the settlement of Gombasek, which belongs to the village of Slavec. It is located in the Slovak Karst National Park, in the Slaná river valley, approximately 15 km south of Rožňava. The cave was discovered on 21 November 1951 by volunteer cavers. In 1955, 285 m out of 1.525 m were opened to the public. Currently, the route for visitors is 530 m long and takes about 30 minutes. The cave was also used for "speleotherapy" as a sanatorium, focused on airway diseases. The small picturesque village of Le Thor lies between two branches of the river Sorgue in the agricultural plain of the Comtat Venaissin. The village is located 5 kilometres west of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and 20 kilometres east of Avignon in the Vaucluse department of Provence. Special sights of Le Thor are the remains of the town wall, the Porte de Douzabas, the Notre-Dame-du-Lac church, the Grottes de Thouzon and the Château de Thouzon. The Grottes de Thouzon caves are located at the foot of the hill of the same name, which is overlooked by the castle of Thouzon. The dripping water has formed an enchanting mineral landscape 230 metres long. In these unique stalactite caves in Provence, you enter a fossilised riverbed that was formed over 60 million years ago. Stalactites and stalagmites Grottes de Thouzon. You will see impressive stalactites and stalagmites, stalagmites, stalagnate (sinter column), sinter curtains, sinter tubes (macaroni), sinter basins and cave pearls. Chimneys, boulder cones, blocked fissures, wells, meanders and flint kidneys are geologically interesting. At the beginning of the formation of the Grottes de Thouzon, the cave was full of water and formed a siphon. The water running under the ceiling dissolved the limestone and released harder rocks such as flint. Because of their shape, the resulting formations are called flint kidneys. Some water basins have been created by lime deposits on the ground. They form a kind of reservoir. The edge of the reservoir becomes higher and higher over time, in some cases it slopes slightly inwards and gradually forms a closed shape that looks like a bell. The Salles des Stalactites fistuleus room contains coloured fistula-like stalactites. The reddish colour of the stalactites comes from iron oxide, the grey colour comes from a manganese deposit. If no oxides are present, the stalactites are coloured white by the lime. Ochtinská Aragonite Cave (Slovak: Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa, Hungarian: Martonházi-aragonitbarlang) is a unique aragonite cave situated in southern Slovakia, near Rožňava. In summer we ration it so we don't run out, in winter it's a challenge to stop the pipe work from freezing. Unfortunately for us the freezing temps won overnight and something went pop. We are very lucky and eternally grateful to have such an amazing Treak family team who sprang to the rescue (some on their day off) to come and make the museum safe. Fortunately it appears to be cosmetic and the Blue John Collection is unaffected, just a little damp. So last week I did a thing! I entered a competition with @stumpcrosscaverns that they’d put out for World Kindness Day offering a free UV Cave Tour & an underground cinema experience 🤩 I entered and I won! 🥹 Woohoo 🥳 We headed over today for the experience and we had the best time! Smiles all round 😁😀 We’ve visited the caves before but this was the first time we’d done the UV tour! It was soooo beautiful! 🖤💜🖤🤍 We headed off with our torches 🔦 and a map 🗺️ (I bounced around the cave with my head again! Seems I still don’t have any spatial awareness??!) We had to find dinosaur eggs with letters on to make a special name (we won’t spoil what it was!) but we got it right so my little man was gifted a precious stone from the gift shop 💎 He’s made up with it, thank you! 🙏 After the tour we got to pick a movie and watch it in their fabulously quaint underground cinema 🍿 🎥 we picked Elf! We giggled all the way through! Then got a selfie with the resident Elf at the end! 🤭🧝 They even fed us too! Bless them. We got a free hot dog and drink 🥤 🌭 which was delish 😋 Of course, we’ve loved Stump Cross Caverns for a while now so even though we got today’s experience free we still had to support their business. We bought a few things in the gift shop and bought cakes to go alongside those hot dogs! 🍰 Turns out our eyes were greedier than our bellies and we couldn’t fit them in! 🐷 Please do go visit these guys if you haven’t been yet (and even if you have!). They’re good people and the caves are stunning! Damp day? Cave! The Yorkshire Dales and their stunning show caves are just a short hop from the South Lakes. With wet weather forecast, and my sister and kids here, we headed to @ingleboroughcave for a day out with the grandparents too. I don't know about you... but kids and guided tours aren't always a good mix. So, the self-guided, step free adventure through the cave was perfect for us. Our energetic 6 & 8 year old niece and nephew could explore safely at their own speed, while our toddler could take her time. Lots of super interesting things to see, including fossils from a gazillion years ago and amazing city-like reflections in the pools. The 1.25 mile walk to the cave entrance is buggy friendly, up a gentle incline with lots of interesting sights for the kids. It's also mostly in the trees, so fairly sheltered in the rain. To top it off, the Sawmill cafe at trail entrance serves up some nice snacks at pretty reasonable prices.
