⛰️ SAVE THIS POST FOR FUTURE HIKES — an approx 8 mile loop up the Dragons Back and Waun Fach, in the @bannaubrycheiniogbreconbeacons National Park 🐉 What a hike! 🤩 This is an absolutely amazing hike in the Brecon Beacons. Named the Dragons Back as the ridge resembles a spine, with the hill going up and down along it. There is a LOT of uphill, so a word of warning beforehand. Worth it though? Absolutely! 🚗 Parking is at a very small lay-by carpark, postcode is LD3 0EP. Get there early! Or there won’t be any space. You pay £2 cash per car in an honesty box. 🗺️ We used the @alltrails Dragons Back route which is very easy to follow. I would suggest taking it clockwise. The hike starts from the carpark. Go down a trail woodland path from there and you’ll see these steps with a stile going into a field (pic 2). Take the steps and start going up (pic 3). This first bit is a trek, but you’ll soon come to the top and you’ll then be greeted with the amazing Dragons Back 🔥 (pic 4). Walk along it, taking in the amazing views. You’ll get to the iconic cairn trig point (pic 5) but this is a bit of a false summit, as you’ll have to ascend again to get to Waun Fach. When you reach the plateau at the top, follow the path on your right, so as you’re walking along you’ll have views of Pen y Fan on your right (pic 6). You’ll reach the Waun Fach summit and then it’s time to make your way down. Take the path to your right and you’ll get to stone steps (pic 7). You’ll be pleased to hear the rest of the route is predominantly downhill. Continue on downwards (pic 8), and when you come to a cairn at a crossroads, take the path that flows down the valley in the direction of the starting point (pic 9). (You’ll be able to see the carpark where you started from here!) Follow the path downhill, coming to fields and farmland (pic 10), then follow a county road that will eventually lead you back to the woodland path where you started. 🍃 This is a hard hike so take plenty of layers, snacks and water, and there is a bunkhouse pub at the carpark for a post-hike drink 🥤 Happy hiking! 🥾

Afternoon walk around Y Garn Goch today. Y Garn Goch, a major Iron Age settlement site near the town of Llandeilo, nowadays feels quiet and remote. However approximately 2,500 years ago this hilltop would have been a thriving centre, where people lived and worked, where food was grown, and where goods were produced and were traded. That was the toughest walk I have ever done, and the longest. I started off ok, but with 10 miles to go, my legs were starting to cramp up and I just couldn’t get the speed and the strength I needed, and with that I did nearly finish it early. It took me 10 hours 43 minutes, and that’s 65000 steps, and 30 miles so the time isn’t too bad in the end, and if I hadn’t got lost I probably could have taken 15 mins of that. I walked it with Mike, who managed to have a strong finish and I have to take my hat off to him for being a superstar hiker!
