Let's now take a closer look at Casa Antonia Burés' ensemble (the same one with the tree in the previous post). One of my favorite details (apart from the trees) is that the railing of the continuous balcony on the main floor is made of stone, and the one above the two tribunes, all with plant motifs. The rest of the railings are made of iron, adopting typically modernist sinuous shapes. I also love the crown. Its five arches are joined with undulating molding and a bust of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the central arcade. *It was not until 1992 that the design of the house was formally attributed to Batllevell. For the longest time, Enric Pi was considered the author, a building contractor, and a friend of Batllevell. Antonia Burés i Borràs and her husband, the textile industrialist Llogarri Torrens i Serra, commissioned the building. The Torrens family has always defended that the design of the façade was a gift from Antoni Gaudí to Batllevell, his collaborator. I guess we will never know for sure! The house is considered Batllevel's most emblematic and successful Modernist work. The showstopper Casa Josefa Villanueva (1904-1909) is a favorite. Imagine what it looked like before, with both spectacular open stone tribunes standing. Apparently, the grandstand on the left (not seen here) fell victim to an unfortunate restoration attempt way back when. Thankfully, one of them still stands and we can admire what the architect Juli Maria Fossas Martinez was going for when he designed the tribune and the striking crowning needles. These are flanked by beautiful and small iron and stained glass grandstands. Let's take a moment and focus on some of Barcelona's Cathedral's main façade details, shall we? The main portal is just so glorious! The large gothic arch and archivolts are probably my favorite feature. The mullion (division between the two doors) features a stone sculpture of Christ, while images of the twelve apostles are situated along its sides. Throughout the façade, one can find 76(!!!) figures representing kings, prophets, angels, and saints. All sculped by Agapito Vallmitjana and Juan Roig. There are eight stained-glass windows on the façade, some are modernist and others are more from the Renaissance style. The current neogothic construction was created by the architect José Oriol Mestres between 1887 and 1890 under the patronage of the banker Manuel Girona. the site has quite an interesting story and the current temple was built over a Romanesque cathedral that was built over another cathedral that replaced a mosque, which was built over a temple dedicated to the main Roman God Jupiter!
