Every so often, I test my daughter to see if she wants a sibling. I know this probably isn’t a great idea, but I’m not a perfect human. I still crave validation sometimes. Over the weekend, I told her we were going to the park with her classmate/friend on my solo parenting day. She responded with, “Yay! A friend to play with! I’m going to draw her a picture!” I couldn’t help but feel a tiny stab of guilt—did she want to play with others more? And before I knew it, I asked her, “Do you need a brother or sister to play with?” I always slight regret asking this question as soon as it comes out, but then I’m also simultaneously so curious about her answer. I held my breath. She retorted, “No!” She sighed, and I finally let out my breath. “I just want friends, mommy!” And she didn’t think anymore of it. Went on with her drawing while I happily made her breakfast and packed for the park. I know I’m slightly ridiculous for asking (btw I don’t recommend doing this), and I know in my rational thinking I’ve told myself countless times that the sibling thing is not going to be my main or sole reason for having another kid. (See my last newsletter, if you haven’t already.) But it’s so ingrained in me because I myself have a sibling, it’s almost a reflex sometimes to wonder if she needs one! So anyway, I just wanted to share that I still falter sometimes, but I need to remember I’m the adult and she’s perfectly fine. The kicker is, she’s starting to tell me whenever I pepper this question in, “A brother or sister wouldn’t be old enough for me to play with anyway! They’d just cry!” Touché. And that’s why she just wants good friends to play with. 🙃 Fun fact: her playmate that day is also a single child, who does not want a sibling either! A good human Someone who if hes an a hole it's an ahole like his momma with a heart that gives and gives and protects and chooses /trusts himself first❤️ Through the frustration, the stubbornness, the attitude, the strong WILL.. It's beautiful to hear him say things like: "You can use my money 💰 too to help buy a house mom, we are a team. It's our money " "I'll take care of you, like you take care of me" And my favorite story he shared about standing up for a girl in his class when she was being bullied/name called " I told the other kid if he's going to call names, to call me names but stop name calling her" It's these beautiful little moments that tug my emotional momma heart and think.. if nothing else. I've git a Damm good kid and while we are always just figuring things out as parents.. if your trying- you ARE doing it right. Many times I am struck by how damn thoughtful, considerate, kind and am just like "shit what a kid"😍 So im saying this reminder to all parents- Assuage any guilt, shame or oh shit did I just cause trauma. By weighing your overall and seeing how amazing the kid is. TW: Miscarriage is mentioned in this episode. If you asked Shannon Eng when she was younger how many kids she wanted, she might have told you ten! She thought she wanted a lot of children, despite being an only child herself. And then she became a mother right before the world shut down for a global pandemic. The idea of having more children soon changed after Shannon went through postpartum during a time where she did not have a village for support and her mental health was often not well. Now she has decided that for her mental health’s sake, one child is exactly what she wants and needs. Some of you may also know Shannon as a popular fitness nutrition specialist and Pilates instructor on social media as @caligirlgetsfit. She uses her platform now not only to share about health and wellness, but to highlight her motherhood journey and how she is an only child who is choosing to raise an only child. She also started @onlynotlonelykids for more single children content recently. In this episode, we talk about Shannon’s two miscarriages that preceded the birth of her child. We talk about how mental health is not considered a “real” reason for not having more children, how only children are given inaccurate stereotypes, how “double or nothing” is a wild and silly concept. We discuss how despite being third and fourth generation Chinese American, Shannon’s family still very much values the notion of having many children so someone can take care of you when you’re older. Through this conversation, we hope it will help normalize the choice to be one and done (or “One and Won” as @pearlsofjasmine likes to call it). We also would love to see society stop mislabeling only children with stereotypes that have been disproven before they really get to know them. Having a choice is a privilege, but we also want to acknowledge that there is no perfect family size. Right to adopt a child is not fundamental GS Paper II News Excerpt: Recently Delhi High Court (HC) stated that the right to adopt a child is not a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution and the prospective adoptive parents (PAPs) do not have any right to choose who to adopt. What Delhi HC has stated in the matter: The HC upheld the retrospective application of a regulation permitting couples with two or more children to adopt only children with special needs or those hard to place. The right to adopt cannot be raised to the status of a fundamental right within Article 21 nor can it be raised to a level granting PAPs the right to demand their choice of who to adopt. The adoption process entirety operates on the premise of the welfare of children and therefore the rights flowing within the adoption framework do not place the rights of the PAPs at the forefront. A balanced approach ought to be welcomed which attempts to reduce the wait for parents with a single child or devoid of even that. Living life through my son’s eyes makes every holiday something extra special, he’s made me remember the joy that celebrating love and friendship can bring.
